Four NASA volunteers see outside world after 378 days of living on ‘Mars’

Four volunteers who spent more than a year pretending to live on Mars have finally stepped outside their isolated habitat, seeing the outside world for the first time in 378 days.

The crew emerged from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday (October 31), ending an experiment designed to find out whether humans can survive the isolation, limited supplies and psychological pressures of a journey to the Red Planet.

For more than a year, the volunteers lived inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat, where they grew crops, conducted simulated spacewalks and carried out scientific experiments.

They also had to communicate with the outside world through artificial delays, recreating the time it takes for messages to travel between Earth and Mars.

Even conversations with family members were restricted to emails delayed to mimic communication across millions of miles.

The four-member crew included commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery and flight engineer James Spicer.

Speaking after emerging from isolation, Ellis described the experience as a year spent voluntarily cut off from the outside world.

The experiment, known as Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), began on October 19, 2025.

Throughout the mission, NASA monitored how the volunteers managed their daily routines, physical health, teamwork and limited resources.

The crew will now undergo two weeks of medical evaluations and debriefings to help researchers understand how astronauts might cope with prolonged missions away from Earth.

This was NASA’s second year-long Mars simulation, following a similar experiment completed in 2024.

The agency hopes the findings will help prepare astronauts for future missions to the Moon and eventually Mars, where crews could spend years away from home with little possibility of immediate assistance.
