Ciara Mageean, two-time Olympian, European 1500m champion dies aged 34

Ciara Mageean, an Irish trailblazer athlete, two-time Olympian, and European 1500m gold medallist, passed away at age 34 after a battle with cancer.

The Irish middle-distance runner, a native from Portaferry in Northern Ireland died at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, her family confirmed in a social media post.

Mageean was considered one of the most gifted Irish athletes, with ace talent in the 1500m event.

She represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Games.

Mageean didn’t participate in the 2024 Paris Games because of an Achilles injury.

Who was Ciara Mageean?

An Irish trailblazer athlete, she started her career in hurling for a local club Portaferry GAC, but soon realised her dream of representing Ireland at the Olympics.

Her running skillset was evident from her accomplishments at a junior level.

She won 1500m silvers at the 2010 World Junior Championship and the 2011 European Junior Championships.

Mageean’s hopes of making her Olympic debut at London 2012 were dashed after she suffered a gruesome ankle injury.

She underwent a procedure in 2013 and, a year later, made a stunning comeback winning the 1500m title in July 2014.

Mageean made her Olympic debut in 2016, but she withdrew the 1500m heat at the semi-final stage after suffering an ankle injury.

After a series of disappointments, Mageean finally secured the big win of her career at the 2024 European Championships in Rome.

She was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025.

Mageean tied the knot in October to her long-time partner Thomas Moran in a ceremony held in Belfast.
