FIFA, for the first time, included 48 teams competing in the tournament

As we are heading to the knockout stages that kick off from June 28, the FIFA World Cup hype just got to the next level.

The group stage is nearing its end on June 27, with remaining teams fighting hard to claim a spot in the round of 32.

Why is it round of 32 instead of 16?

Because it’s for the first time that FIFA has included 48 teams competing in the tournament.

The breakdown is designed in a way that first divides them into 12 groups of four, with group winners and the runners-up qualifying for the round of 32.

But it’s not ended here; the teams who came in third place, based on points and goal average, will also make it to the round of 32 after the group stage ends on June 27, 2026.
