We all are longing for the days of Obama. His latest mic toss proves it

Barack Obama is back in the spotlight and Millennial Democrats are suddenly feeling something they have not in years — hope.

Having Obama back behind the podium brings a wave of intense nostalgia and longing for the days when a competent (and handsome) man resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. His easy swagger and natural charisma feel like a warm hug from an old friend; a temporary balm to soothe our weary souls, exhausted from the unfiltered chaos of the current administration.

Watching him casually and effortlessly toss that microphone at the conclusion of the Michigan rally for Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson — in a recreation of his viral mic drop at the 2016 White House Correspondents’ Dinner — brings back memories of the good old days.

Online chatter praised 44’s “impeccable aura” and branded him “the coolest to ever do it.” Others said he’s “still charismatic, after all these years” and labeled him “the GOAT.” But it’s one Instagram comment — “Alexa, play Daddy’s Home by Usher” — that perfectly sums up how so many of us are feeling.

We used to wait with baited breath to see what Obama was going to do next; how he could possibly top whatever wry comment or heartfelt speech had us fawning. And somehow, he always managed to do just that, keeping us swooning over his unwavering confidence and ability to string multiple coherent sentences together back-to-back-to-back.

When our hearts were broken over senseless school shootings and violence, Obama always knew just what to say to get us to keep moving forward. When times were tough, he gave us reasons to feel hopeful. Even through the infamous tan suit and the (unhinged) Dijon mustard burger controversies, Obama continued to win us over. He showed us time and time again that he was a real, imperfect human being, which only earned him more respect.

That’s why he nearly broke millions of Millennial hearts in 2025 when whispers signaled the possible end of his marriage to Michelle Obama. Several solo appearances from the former president (sans everyone’s favorite first lady) at high-profile events like Jimmy Carter’s funeral left us panicked. Surely if they can’t make it through two presidential terms and the forced turnover of the White House to the orange guy, there’s no hope for the rest of us.

Thankfully they’ve continued their loved up Instagram posts marking milestone anniversaries and birthdays. Their relationship is just another reason why we desperately miss the Obamas.

No one is without flaws, and it takes a certain personality to want to be president in the first place. Obama wasn’t perfect, but as far as presidents go (and especially given what we have now) he was one of the best. No shady business dealings or criminal charges. Just a passion for America, the people who inhabit it, and those who dream of calling it home.

Imagine that! With all that we’ve endured as a country in the near decade since he left the White House, seeing Obama back where he belongs — slipping jokes and flipping mics — is the beacon of hope we so desperately need.
