The United States defeated Australia 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage clash on Friday, with an own goal from Cameron Burgess and a first international goal from Alex Freeman securing all three points for the hosts.
The Americans made a bright start and took the lead in the 11th minute when Folarin Balogrun made a sharp run into the area and fizzed in a low dangerous cross which Burgess could only divert into his own net. The hosts doubled their advantage two minutes before the break. Sergiño Dest’s powerful effort from outside the area took a deflection, and Freeman reacted quickest to head home the rebound past Patrick Beach and put the United States firmly in control.
