Tommy Lee Jones, 80, makes first red carpet appearance in three years

Tommy Lee Jones made a rare red carpet appearance Wednesday to celebrate the season two premiere of The Lowdown.

The FX crime comedy series stars Ethan Hawke as self-proclaimed citizen journalist Lee Raybon, who gets pulled into a sprawling local conspiracy after his exposé on a wealthy family ends in a suspicious death. Jones plays Lee Raybon Senior — Lee’s estranged grifter father.

The Oscar winner attended the premiere at AFS Cinema in Austin, Texas, marking his first red carpet appearance in nearly three years.

Jones last walked a red carpet in December 2023 for the premiere of Paramount+’s crime thriller Finestkind, where he was joined by his co-star Jenna Ortega.

Jones made headlines earlier this year following the tragic death of his 34-year-old daughter, Victoria Jones, on New Year’s Day.

Her cause of death was later determined to be an accidental overdose caused by the “toxic effects of cocaine,” according to the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

She was the second child of Jones and his second wife, Kimberlea Cloughley, to whom he was married from 1981 to 1996. They also share a son, Austin, who is 43.

“We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time,” Jones and his family shared in a statement at the time.

Jones has largely stayed out of the public eye in the months since Victoria’s death and rarely makes red carpet appearances.

One of America’s most respected film stars, Jones is returning to television with The Lowdown, his first regular television work since his time on the ABC soap opera, One Life to Live, in the 1970s.

“He made me proud to be an actor,” Hawke said of working with Jones in a recent interview with USA Today.

“It’s an odd life and to be really good at it, it’s extremely difficult. He’s been on the same road for 25 years longer [than me] and he’s really, really smart… He’s been through the fires of life.

“I look forward to people seeing Tommy in the show because he doesn’t just make a cameo in the show; he’s giving a performance and it’s a great one.”

The second season of The Lowdown premieres on Wednesday, October 14, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu.
