Queen Sonja steps out in vibrant pink for first royal trip abroad

Norway’s Queen Sonja has made her first overseas trip since the death of her husband, King Harald.

The 89-year-old royal travelled to Málaga during the week, where she attended an exhibition opening and spent time with pupils at a Norwegian school.

Her visit came just weeks after she resumed her public duties following a period of mourning.

A red carpet was laid out for her arrival, as delighted pupils gathered at the school gates to welcome the Queen with bunches of flowers.

She later met the students and enjoyed a musical performance by the young performers.

Before her school visit, the Queen attended the opening of the Munch-Picasso exhibition at Málaga’s Picasso Museum on 29 October.

“Allow me, first of all, to say that I was deeply saddened to learn of the terrible train accident that took place yesterday near Toledo,” she said.

She continued: “My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones, with their families and friends, and with all those affected by this tragic event.”

The Queen also offered her “heartfelt condolences and my deepest sympathy to everyone who is grieving at this very difficult time.”
