King Charles will leave for a nine-day tour of the Caribbean on Tuesday, his first visit to the region as monarch.
Prime minister and Queen Camilla will meet him in Antigua and Barbuda ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on November 3.
According to GB News, the visit carries an additional layer of significance as Charles is being tipped to be the final royal to serve as head of the Commonwealth.
Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace said King Charles will not shy away from Britain’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade when he tours the Caribbean later this month, but will not formally apologise for “the darkest days of our past.”
The trip comes amid growing clamour from Caribbean and African nations for Britain and other colonial powers to pay reparations for their involvement in slavery, with the issue likely to be prominent at CHOGM.
Sources close to Prince William said the future king was not thinking about who the Commonwealth chooses to lead the organization in the future.
William appeared to distance himself from the institution after his 2022 tour of Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica sparked fierce debate about Britain’s colonial legacy and the monarchy’s place within the Commonwealth.
The report said that Williams’ stance has raised profound questions about what becomes of the 56-nation organisation once Charles’s reign ends.
