A life-extending prostate cancer drug is to be made available to thousands of men in England in a matter of weeks, after a campaign by a patient and a charity.

Abiraterone has been provided on the NHS in Scotland and Wales since 2023 but not in England and Northern Ireland, except in the most severe cases.

The drug is already prescribed for patients in the UK with very advanced prostate cancer that has spread.

But from now on the drug will be available on the NHS in England to high-risk patients whose cancer has not yet metastasised – potentially saving hundreds of lives.

Amy Rylance, assistant director of health improvement at charity Prostate Cancer UK, said the decision was “a momentous, life-saving victory for the thousands of men whose lives will now be saved”.

She praised the BBC for keeping “a spotlight on this issue” through its coverage over the past few years.

The charity estimates 7,000 men a year will now start the treatment, with some 1,470 avoiding later news that their cancer has got worse.

The charity suggests some 560 lives will be saved.

The drug will be available in weeks, NHS England says, with around 2,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the last three months getting access to the treatment if it is of clinical benefit.

Abiraterone stops cancer spreading by starving the disease of the hormones it needs to grow.

Giles Turner, from Brighton, was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in March 2023.

He approached BBC News later that year after hearing that abiraterone was provided by the NHS in Scotland and Wales but not in England.

“I was shocked and angered that my postcode meant I was denied free access to a treatment that could halve my risk of dying and give me the best chance of a cure,” he told the BBC.

He chose to pay for treatment with the drug, costing him £250 a month.

He told us then that he felt “very fortunate” to be able to afford it, but outraged for others who could not.

Mr Turner began his campaign for a change of policy.

At the time, NHS England said it was reviewing the drug’s use for a wider range of men.

But the following year officials told Prostate Cancer UK that there was no funding available. This was repeated by ministers in early 2025.

“Today’s wonderful news is the culmination of all our determined and dogged efforts” said Mr Turner.

“I’m beyond happy that men like me now have fair access to the most effective treatment, that so many lives will now be saved, and that so many families will be spared heartbreak.”

But he added that he was frustrated that nearly three years had passed since he raised the issue.

Abiraterone tablets can help stop prostate cancer spreading

Prostate Cancer UK’s argument that many lives could be extended by the drug was based on the findings of a trial called STAMPEDE, published in 2022.

It found improved odds of survival among men given the drug alongside usual care.

The Institute of Cancer Research said two years of abiraterone halved the risk of prostate cancer coming back and reduced the risk of death by 40%.

Researchers had been frustrated that the health watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) had not approved the use of the drug for newly diagnosed patients.

But for NICE and the medical regulator the MHRA to consider extending a drug’s usage they need detailed and time-consuming applications.

In October 2022, abiraterone had gone “off patent” – which means the legal protection granted to the original brand making it (granting them exclusive rights to manufacture and sell it) had expired.

Once it became a generic medicine – with other companies now having the right to buy and sell it – there was limited incentive for companies to seek approval for it to be prescribed for a wider group of patients.

Ministers and health authorities in Scotland and Wales found a way within existing protocols to start supplying the drug to the NHS.

But there was no such shift in England.

NHS England said because money had been saved on other medicines it was now possible to fund the extension of the drug’s availability.

National clinical director for cancer at NHS England, Prof Peter Johnson, said: “The life-extending treatment available on the NHS within weeks will mean thousands of men can kick-start their year with the news that they will have a better chance of living longer and healthier lives.

“The NHS will continue to work hard to offer people the most effective and evidence-based treatments, with several new prostate cancer drugs rolled over the last five years.”

Health and social care Secretary Wes Streeting said: “When you’re living with prostate cancer, every day with your loved ones matters.

“I’m delighted the NHS have taken the steps needed to make the drug available, giving thousands of men access to abiraterone – a treatment that significantly improves survival rates and can give patients precious extra years of life.”

Responding to the news, STAMPEDE trial co-lead Prof Gert Attard, at the UCL Cancer Institute, said: “This is a hugely welcome moment for patients. Our research showed clearly that abiraterone can save lives when offered earlier to men at high risk of their cancer spreading.

“Funding for this disease indication is already available in Scotland and Wales, so we are delighted that NHS England has acted on this evidence and will now make this highly effective treatment routinely available.”

Prostate Cancer UK is engaging with the decision-makers in Northern Ireland to try to ensure that they rapidly follow suit.

The charity said it was writing to politicians in Northern Ireland to press the government in Stormont.

Stormont has yet to comment on any plans to change how abiraterone is prescribed.

OpenAI on Friday announced it will begin testing ads within ChatGPT in the coming weeks, a highly anticipated decision that could kickstart a lucrative new revenue stream for the artificial intelligence startup.

OpenAI said its Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will not include ads, but it plans to start testing them with adult free users in the U.S. The company also made its low-cost Go offering available in the U.S. on Friday, and it said users who opt for that plan will also begin to see ads.

The company inked more than $1.4 trillion worth of infrastructure deals in 2025, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in November that the startup was on track to generate $20 billion in annualized revenue run rate last year.

Introducing ads to ChatGPT could help OpenAI meet its ambitious spending commitments, as digital advertising has long been the cash cow for other big tech companies like Google and Meta.

Ads within ChatGPT will appear at the bottom of the chatbot’s answers, and they will be clearly labeled, OpenAI said.

ChatGPT’s responses will not be influenced by ads, and OpenAI said it will “never” sell users’ data to advertisers, according to a release.

Users under the age of 18 will not see ads, and ads will not appear near certain topics, including politics, health and mental health, OpenAI said.

Altman has publicly expressed reservations about introducing ads to ChatGPT in recent years, stating in interviews that doing so could erode users’ trust in OpenAI’s products. But in a November podcast appearance, Altman said he expected OpenAI to try ads “at some point,” though he added that he did not believe it would be the company’s biggest revenue opportunity.

“We’ll learn from feedback and refine how ads show up over time, but our commitment to putting users first and maintaining trust won’t change,” OpenAI said in a statement on Friday.

As OpenAI tests ads, the company said users will be able to learn more about why they’re seeing a specific ads, dismiss ads and submit feedback about the experience.

Blake Lively strengthens legal team ahead of Baldoni trial

Blake Lively has hired a new member to her legal team, high-profile attorney Sigrid McCawley, amid the ongoing lawsuit against Justin Baldoni.

McCawley, who has advocated for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, will deal with media and public communications for Lively’s crucial matters linked to the case, via People.

“It is a privilege to get to work with Blake Lively’s world class legal team on a case that at its core is about a woman who was subjected to a hostile work environment and is being attacked for standing up to protect herself and other female co-workers,” the attorney told the outlet.

Lively’s legal fight has already been overseen by attorneys Mike Gottlieb and Esra Hudson for months.

The attorneys expressed their excitement for the new team member, “We are thrilled that Sigrid has joined Blake’s legal team in this important role, handling our public-facing communications. We recruited Sigrid based on her many years of work speaking truth to power, including her courageous representation of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, and have no doubt her experience will serve the team well.”

McCawley’s previous work includes representing survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Her work has helped in exposing Epstein’s abuse network, leading to several settlements and criminal cases.

Notably, Lively’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, was also represented by McCawley who was countersued by Baldoni. The case was later dismissed by the court in June 2025.

It is pertinent to mention that Lively has sued Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, and others, alleging sexual harassment and retaliation, claims he denies. Baldoni’s countersuit accusing Lively and Ryan Reynolds of defamation and extortion was dismissed. The case is scheduled to go to trial in May 2026.

King Charles, Royals face ultimate test to win back Britons’ trust

The latest survey susgests that royal scandals and feuds have apparently damaged the the Firm’s reputation among Britons.

The royal family needs to take drastic steps to deal with the Andrew crisis as the people of Britain believe the monarch is ‘acting too slowly’ over the disgraced royal.

Tough the majority of people still believe in the monarchy, people demand the royal family to make decisive and quick decision over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Most of them believe the royal family acted at a low speed when addressing the former prince’s connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The new polling data, released on Friday, January 24, hints at growing pressure from the public.

58 per cent of respondents felt the royals acted too slowly in handling the revelations, compared with just 21 per cent who considered the pace appropriate, according to The YouGov survey.

The latest findings come amid Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s fall from grace over their past connections to the convicted financier.

According to the same research, nearly two-thirds of Britons (64 per cent) maintain that the United Kingdom should continue as a constitutional monarchy.

King Charles’ reign has fluctuated between 61 and 67 per cent. Roughly a quarter of the population, at 23 per cent, would prefer an elected head of state.

More than 57 per cent of those surveyed believe the monarchy benefits Britain. Despite all the crises and conflicts, Kate and William continue to dominate the popularity rankings,

Princess Anne also enjoys strong support, while Queen Camilla’s standing has dipped somewhat. However, King Charles’ standing has remained consistent throughout the past year.

Around half of the public views Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie positively.

As expected, Andrew’s ratings have plummeted to rock bottom, with a mere three per cent of Britons holding a favourable view of the disgraced former duke. Meghan Markle has also reached her lowest recorded favourability.

5 warm Indian destinations above 25°C right now to escape the winter chill

Winter in North India has its own charm, but when foggy mornings, layered clothing, seems a bit too much, we kind of know that it’s time for that quick break. This week, Delhi/NCR has been facing a gripping cold, with temperatures dipping sharply and cold waves linger longer than expected. Although the weather men are saying that the weather is expected to get better soon, it’s also one of the reasons to plan that quick trip just to see how warm weather feels like in winters. For many, winter also becomes the ideal excuse to head south, where the sun shines generously and the mercury doesn’t fall below comfortable levels.
So, here are five destinations where winter feels more like an extended summer.

Paul Mescal clarifies acting break comment as he teases Paul McCartney role

Paul Mescal on playing Paul McCartney and those break comments

Paul Mescal is reflecting on why he wanted to take on the role of William Shakespeare and The Beatles legend Paul McCartney.

“It’s not about his genius; it’s about his artistic compulsion. That’s fascinating to me,” he told People of playing the legendary playwright in Hamnet.

As for taking on McCartney’s role in the upcoming The Beatles—A Four-Film Cinematic Event, he said, “I think it’s very much tied to the feeling that I got from playing Shakespeare. It’s like a wild privilege to get to play these creative forces and to get a peek behind the curtain.”

Elsewhere, he also clarified what he meant when he recently said that he’ll take a two-year break.

“Oh, what I meant by that is that I’m excited for the period of time that will fundamentally exist where I won’t be promoting anything,” Mescal said.

“I would really lose my mind if I took two years off out of my job. But what I’m excited about is the concept of not being on a promotional tour for the next two years. And I think it’ll give people a welcome break from seeing my face,” he added.

The Normal People star has once again impressed critics, this time with his performance in Hamnet. In the film, Mescal and Jessie Buckley play Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, as the couple grieve the loss of their son, Hamnet. The period of grief then inspires the playwright to pen his famous play Hamlet.

Paul Mescal has recieved his first Golden Globe nomination for playing William Shakespeare in Hamnet.

Mining companies hold FTSE back in quiet end to the week

Mining companies hold FTSE back in quiet end to the week

Stocks in London ended little changed on Friday, with blue chips edging lower after notching another record as investors held fire ahead of the long weekend in the US.

“Investors have been kept on their toes year-to-date with non-stop geopolitical issues, and mixed messages from the business world. A quieter day on the corporate reporting calendar gave investors a chance to catch their breath and take stock of events,” said Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell.

The FTSE 100 index closed down just 3.65 points at 10,235.29. It had earlier hit a new intra-day best level of 10,257.75.

The FTSE 250 ended up 31.39 points, 0.1%, at 23,311.37, and the AIM All-Share closed just 0.27 of a point higher at 804.75.

For the week, the FTSE 100 rose 1.1%, the FTSE 250 climbed 1.2%, and the AIM All-Share advanced 2.1%.

In European equities on Friday, the CAC 40 in Paris closed down 0.7%, while the DAX 40 in Frankfurt ended 0.2% lower.

“There was a slightly negative tone across European stock indices on Friday,” commented David Morrison, senior market analyst, at Trade Nation. “It appeared that investors were more comfortable taking some risk off the table, no doubt mindful that US markets will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Day.”

In London, the FTSE 100 was pegged back by weak mining stocks, a key factor behind recent index strength.

The price of copper fell 3.0%, and silver slumped 3.7%, giving up some recent gains, while gold nursed less severe falls.

Gold was quoted at 4,594.24 dollars an ounce on Friday, down from 4,616.76 on Thursday.

In response, Endeavour Mining fell 2.7%, Anglo American declined 2.4%, Antofagasta dipped 2.9%, and Glencore fell 2.5%.

Strategists at Bank of America downgraded the mining sector to ‘underweight’ and lifted energy to ‘market weight’.

“After sharp outperformance for mining, the potential downside risks stemming from the sector’s macro drivers are becoming hard to ignore,” BofA said.

BofA noted that a historical divergence in commodity prices has led to a decoupling among European resources with a surge in metal prices over recent months, including a 50% rally in copper, alongside a “roll-over” in energy prices, with the oil price down 30% to four-year lows recently.

As a result, the copper-to-oil ratio has risen close to a 40-year high, which in turn has led to significant divergence between European resources sectors, with mining outperforming by 40% since April, while energy has underperformed by nearly 15%.

“Resources sector pricing looks stretched in both directions,” BofA added.

Brent oil traded higher at 64.48 dollars a barrel on Friday, up from 63.55 late on Thursday.

Pearson ended a miserable week for investors, with a further 4.1% decline.

The educational publisher has seen its shares fall 12% this week after a poorly received trading update.

A previously undisclosed contract loss for US student assessment in New Jersey, which will drag on first-half growth, was blamed for the stock fall, although analysts note Pearson is confident that the loss of the contract will have no bearing on other renewals in the coming years.

Heading higher were property companies British Land and Land Securities, up 1.4% and 1.3% respectively, on hopes lower interest rates will spark a sector upturn, while BAE Systems, up 2.3%, remained in favour amid geopolitical jitters.

Stocks in New York were little changed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was slightly lower, while the S&P 500 index was up 0.1%, as was the Nasdaq Composite.

Economic data showed that US industrial production rose faster than expected in December.

The Federal Reserve said that on a monthly basis, industrial production increased by 0.4% in December, the same pace as in November, which was revised up from 0.2%. It was better than the FXStreet-cited consensus of a 0.1% uptick.

On an annual basis, total industrial production was 2.0% higher in December than a year prior.

Shannon Glein, analyst at Wells Fargo, said the underlying details show a “key theme from last year – everything high-tech and AI related outperformed”.

“We expect this trend to persist going forward, but it’s also worth noting that the slow yet steady ascent in all other industrial production on a year-ago basis is a sign that broader activity may be starting to recover,” she added.

The pound was quoted lower at 1.3382 dollars at the time of the London equities close on Friday, compared to 1.3388 on Thursday.

The euro stood at 1.1596 dollars, lower against 1.1607.

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury was quoted at 4.21%, widening from 4.16%. The yield on the US 30-year Treasury was quoted at 4.82%, stretched from 4.78%.

Back in London, Genus led the FTSE 250 risers, advancing 7.8%, after reporting that adjusted pretax profit for the six months to December 31 would be about £50 million, ahead of expectations.

Berenberg pointed out it was “the second guidance raise in the past three months, making it one of the standout performers within our coverage”.

“Importantly, the upgrades are being driven by strong trading in the PIC (pigs) business, which reflects the benefits of the group’s shift towards a royalty-driven model. This is increasing the defensiveness and predictability of earnings and sets a very positive tone for a year that we believe has more positive catalysts to come”, the bank added.

The biggest risers on the FTSE 100 were BAE Systems, up 47.0 pence at 2,088.0p, NatWest, up 13.8p at 652.8p, Smiths Group, up 50.0p at 2,612.0p, Schroders, up 8.6p at 467.0p and National Grid, up 20.5p at 1,201.5p.

The biggest fallers on the FTSE 100 were Pearson, down 39.6p at 939.0p, Entain, down 23.8p at 703.0p, Antofagasta, down 105.0p at 3,560.0p, Endeavour Mining, down 110.0p at 3,996.0p and Glencore, down 12.4p at 478.6p.

Monday’s global economic calendar features a slew of data from China, including GDP, retail sales, and industrial production.

In Canada, inflation figures will be published, while US financial markets are closed for Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Monday’s UK corporate calendar has a trading statement from building materials firm Marshalls.

Later in the week, trading statements are due from luxury goods retailer Burberry, sports retailer JD Sports Fashion and miner Rio Tinto.

Secret Service aware after Iranian state TV airs Trump threat featuring photo of Butler assassination attempt

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Iranian state television aired a vile threat against President Donald Trump earlier this week, referencing the 47th president’s near assassination while on the campaign trail in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024.

The clip showed a sign held by a demonstrator at a pro-Iranian regime gathering. The sign featured a now-iconic photo of Trump, standing on stage with a bloodied ear after being grazed by a bullet at the Butler campaign stop, while Secret Service agents rushed to his aid.

The caption below the photo, written in Farsi, said, “This time, it (the bullet) won’t miss,” according to i24 news correspondent Amachia Stein, who posted a screenshot of the television clip on his X account.

The Secret Service confirmed that it is aware of the photo.

LINDSEY GRAHAM CALLS FOR US TO USE ‘ANY MEANS NECESSARY’ TO STOP THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE KILLING OF IRANIANS

At the Pennsylvania rally, Trump turned his head a split-second before the bullet struck him, avoiding what could have been a deadly shot. In defiance of his protective detail, he stood up and raised his fist, yelling, “Fight, fight, fight,” before being scuttled off the stage.

The threat comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, and as the Iranian people rise up against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei‘s brutal regime.

The protests stemmed from the cloistered Middle Eastern country’s economic crisis, which has become increasingly dire as the value of the Rial, Iran’s currency, has plummeted.

The regime has cracked down hard on the protesters, with state-sanctioned killings estimated to be in the thousands.

At least one U.S. aircraft carrier has been moved to the region, military sources told Fox News Digital. Those same sources said missile defense systems are expected to be deployed in the region to protect U.S. and allied military bases.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump told the media that “very important sources on the other side” informed him that Iran has halted the execution of protesters, but said he is keeping an eye on the situation.
