Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff’s victory in Georgia’s midterm elections has reignited speculation about his presidential ambitions, with former President Barack Obama’s recent praise and the 39-year-old’s growing online popularity drawing fresh attention.
Ossoff defeated Republican Representative Mike Collins, who was backed by President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, November 3, securing another six-year term in a state Trump won during the 2024 presidential election.
However, much of the attention surrounding his victory has shifted towards the 2028 presidential race, with political commentators and supporters drawing comparisons between Ossoff and Obama.
Speaking at an election rally on October 28, Obama praised the Georgia senator and joked that “he looks like a Kennedy, all handsome in the videos.”
The former president also highlighted Ossoff’s connection to late civil rights leader John Lewis, who mentored both politicians.
Meanwhile, Ossoff has gained an unusual following on social media, where videos of his speeches and photographs of his increasingly muscular appearance have attracted attention.
Some supporters have even described him as “jacked”, while his confrontational speeches against Trump have circulated widely online.
His popularity has also caught the attention of political analysts. CNN’s Kasie Hunt suggested that his election victory marked the beginning of a possible presidential campaign, according to the Daily Mail.
Despite the speculation, Ossoff has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he intends to seek the White House.
During an October debate, he said he had “zero interest” in running for president and promised to complete his six-year Senate term if re-elected.
Ossoff first entered the Senate in 2021 after winning a closely watched Georgia runoff election.
His latest victory has strengthened his national profile, although he has made no announcement suggesting that he plans to enter the 2028 presidential race.
