McDonald’s fans not pleased with nostalgic menu item’s revival

McDonald’s is marking spooky season by bringing back its nostalgic Boo Buckets with an all-new collaboration — but some superfans aren’t pleased.

To celebrate the 40th year of the limited-edition Halloween-themed Boo Buckets, the fast food chain is collaborating with Disney to feature a set of infamous villains on the packaging.

Instead of the classic Boo Bucket designs (consisting of witches, ghosts and pumpkins with corresponding, color coordinated lids), this year’s editions will feature The Little Mermaid’s Ursula, 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil, The Lion King’s Scar, Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent and Aladdin’s Jafar.

Each bucket includes stickers and a lid featuring the classic McDonald’s arches, in a departure from the more classic plastic design. The Disney Boo Buckets will launch October 20.

While Boo Buckets have previously featured other TV and film characters, like Scooby-Doo and Mr. Potato Head, fans were disappointed by the Disney villain feature. And others were even ore disappointed that the fast food chain didn’t bring back its original Boo Bucket lid like they campaigned for.

Others also complained online that the Disney villains are not usually associated with Halloween.

“There’s nothing cool about them at all, not even Halloween themed,” wrote one person on Instagram. “So disappointing. @officialhappymeal do better and give us boo buckets with lids or McNugget buddies!”

“Why Disney Villains?” said another.

“As fun as this is, I was hoping for the OG buckets with lids,….. def skipping this year’s buckets.”

Another said: “Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the OG Boo Buckets with…. Disney villains? I can easily pass on these.”

“All we wanted were lids… no one asked for this,” said another.

McDonald’s Boo Buckets are sold as a Happy Meal and include a choice of a hamburger, four-piece Chicken McNuggets or six-piece Chicken McNuggets with apple slices, fries and a drink.

The limited-edition buckets will only be available while supplies last.

The Monster Boo Buckets were introduced in 1986 and have been released on a sporadic basis since then. They made an official comeback in 2016 and again in 2022.

Last year’s Boo Buckets featured the classic pumpkin, ghost, and zombie designs, and also introduced black cat and witch variations.
