Matt Damon reveals wife Luciana’s selfless act amid ‘scary’ health battle

The couple have been married since 2005 and share four daughters

Matt Damon is opening up about a frightening health scare that left his wife, Luciana Barroso, needing brain surgery.

In a GQ cover story published Thursday, November 5, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that Barroso suffered a brain aneurysm shortly before the 2024 Oscars.

Damon, 56, and Barroso, 50, missed the ceremony, where Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer starring Damon collected seven awards, including Best Picture. However, the couple eventually made it to an afterparty once Barroso began feeling better.

“It was first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back,” Damon recalled. “And she surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the afterparty.”

The Good Will Hunting star said his wife was determined to attend after he missed the 2007 Oscars, when The Departed won Best Picture, because he was filming The Bourne Ultimatum.

“She was like, ‘This time we’re going out,’” he said. “And it was pretty f***ing heroic of her to do that and really meaningful.”

Damon also reassured fans that Barroso is “totally fine” now.

The couple married in 2005 and share four daughters: Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 18, and Stella, 16.

Elsewhere in the GQ interview, Damon discussed balancing work with family life, revealing that they usually follow a two-week limit on time spent away from home.
