Craig Melvin wasn’t about to let Martha Stewart pin her Halloween costume controversy on him without a few questions.
The Today anchor confronted the lifestyle mogul during her appearance on Friday, November 6, after she suggested that a chocolate mishap involving him had pushed her to dress as an unhoused person for Halloween.
The controversy began on October 31, when Stewart, 85, posted a photo of herself wearing ripped clothing, with dirt on her face and a clipboard reading “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”

The image sparked backlash, prompting her to delete it and issue an apology.
Stewart later explained that Craig had spilled chocolate on the white sweater she planned to wear, leaving her scrambling for a last-minute costume.
But Melvin wanted to know why he had been pulled into the story.
“Why was I dragged into it?” Craig asked.
Stewart insisted she wasn’t blaming him, saying she had simply made a joke about the chocolate incident.
Melvin, however, clarified that there was “no connection” between the spill and her eventual costume.
Stewart then admitted that her grandson had called the outfit “tone deaf,” acknowledging that many others had felt the same way.
“It was just stupid. And I apologize, because I was not making fun of anybody or making light of the great problems that face our country,” she said.
She also promised to pay closer attention to social issues, adding: “It was stupid, what else can I say? I’m so sorry and I hope that my followers and my fans and the rest of America forgives me for doing something that was not meant in any way to be a bad thing.”
