Lidl sales boost as budget deals lure in millions of new shoppers

Lidl UK has reported a sales surge of more than 10 per cent over the past year, driven by strong demand for its premium “Deluxe” line and an influx of new customers.

The UK division of the German budget retailer generated £13 billion in revenue during the 12 months to the end of February, representing a 10.8 per cent rise on the prior year.

Growth was bolstered by a 12 per cent annual increase in purchases from its Deluxe label, which features higher-end groceries, beauty products and household items.

Non-food turnover also expanded significantly, rising 19 per cent. This was led by in-house brands including Silvercrest kitchenware—popular for blenders and air fryers—Parkside hardware tools, and Esmara apparel.

The performance reflects an ongoing trend of cost-conscious consumers trading down from major branded goods to supermarket own-label options amidst sustained squeeze on household budgets.

Official filings reveal the company’s pre-tax profits climbed 31 per cent to reach £205.5 million over the period.

Around 43 million more customers visited its shops during the year, which Lidl attributed to its investments in lowering prices and expanding its chain of shops.

It has also developed its loyalty programme through the Lidl Plus app which issues weekly offers to members.

Lidl overtook Morrisons in May to become the fifth-largest grocery chain in the UK, according to Worldpanel by Numerator data.

It now has more than 1,000 shops across the UK and is expecting to have opened a further 50 during the current financial year, which ends in February 2027, as part of a £600 million investment.

Ryan McDonnell, the chief executive of Lidl Great Britain, said: “Our performance is a clear testament to the trust that millions of customers place in us every week as a direct result of the dedication of our colleagues right across the country.

“As we grow, our focus doesn’t shift – we’re constantly investing in low prices, high quality, and maximum value for our customers.”
