Joy Behar has offered her theory on why The View so rarely wins at the Daytime Emmys, saying voters “do not like to vote for multiple hosts.”
The comedian and co-host made the comments on the 3 November episode of the podcast The View: Behind the Table.
She argued that voters have different opinions about each member of the panel, which makes it hard for them to back a show with several hosts.
Behar said she has been on the programme for 30 years and has “only won one Emmy”.
She described the show’s 2009 win as “the exception to the rule,” and suggested the programme does not win more often because it is “a high-quality show.”
She also credited the wins of The Talk to the fact that it rarely covers political topics, and acknowledged that the show’s mostly Democratic panel may alienate some viewers.
At this year’s ceremony, Sherri Shepherd won Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host, beating Kelly Clarkson, Tamron Hall, Jennifer Hudson and The View’s panel.
The View was also nominated for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series and for Outstanding Art/Direction/Set/Decorative/Scenic Design, but The Kelly Clarkson Show won both categories.
The 2009 victory came when Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and the late Barbara Walters shared the host award.
Executive producer Brian Teta has said it was the first time in the Academy’s history that multiple hosts had won together.
The show has been nominated for Outstanding Talk Show Host in most years since 1998.
Since its debut in 1997, it has earned 190 nominations and 33 wins overall, and the series itself has been nominated 21 times for Outstanding Talk Show, winning in 2003 and 2020.
The current panel is made up of Goldberg, Ana Navarro, Sara Haines, Behar, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin.
