Jamal Syed sets ultra-running record | The Express Tribune

Pakistani ultra-runner Jamal Syed has completed a gruelling 275 kilometre run from K2 base camp to Skardu in 74 hours, setting a national record and highlighting the country’s potential for adventure sports and sports tourism.

Jamal, a Backyard Ultra Asia Champion and three-time Pakistan national champion, completed the demanding journey in a single continuous effort, without taking a prolonged break or stopping to sleep.

The challenge was originally planned to begin at an altitude of 6,000 metres, with Jamal aiming for a world record. However, severe weather conditions made the planned start impossible.

Following the adverse weather, Jamal and Lok Sahaita decided to pursue a national record instead.

The achievement, Jamal said, was not about personal glory but about promoting adventure sports, trail running and ultra-marathons in Pakistan, while encouraging young people to take up endurance sports.

“This journey was not for me personally. It was for Pakistan and for the young generation of Pakistan,” Jamal said.

“With the support of Lok Sahaita, our aim is to open a new window for adventure sports in Pakistan, encourage young talent, and create opportunities for Pakistani athletes to represent their country on the international stage.”

Jamal also hopes the feat will help attract international trail runners and ultra-runners to Pakistan, giving them an opportunity to experience the country’s mountain landscapes while contributing to adventure tourism.

He said his long-term vision was to develop a pathway for talented Pakistani athletes to compete internationally and bring greater recognition to the country.

The K2 base camp-to-Skardu challenge is the latest milestone in Jamal’s endurance-running career and comes as Pakistan seeks to expand its presence in adventure sports.

Jamal said the mission was simple: “Run for Pakistan, inspire the next generation, and open Pakistan to the world of adventure sports.”
