I’ve studied over 200 kids—parents who raise resilient, successful children teach them these 6 lessons early on

When we talk about raising successful kids, we tend to talk about what they can do.

Are they getting good grades? Are they going to basketball practices and winning games? Did they clean their rooms and set the table? Are they motivated? Responsible? Social? Can they solve problems, make good choices and eventually become independent adults?

But after years spent working with more than 200 families, I’ve seen that some of the most important lessons children need to live successful, happy and fulfilling lives — and to build healthy relationships — have very little to do with action or achievement.

Children absorb crucial messages in ordinary moments based on how we respond when they struggle, fail, disagree with us, disappoint us or simply become someone different from who we imagined they would be.

In my experience, there are six things parents of the most successful, confident, resilient and well-adjusted kids teach them early on that have nothing to do with accomplishments.

1. Failure doesn’t change who they are to you

Children notice what happens between you when something goes wrong. They see your face when the grade comes back. They notice whether you seem prouder after the win and more distant after the loss.

A child should be able to fail without feeling they have fallen in your eyes. For example, instead of immediately asking “Why didn’t you study more?” try “I know you wanted a different result. How are you feeling about it?”

When children know a bad result won’t change how we see them, they don’t have to be so afraid of getting things wrong. Failure can become something they learn from instead of something they feel they need to hide.

2. Disappointing someone doesn’t always mean they did something wrong

3. What they’re good at isn’t who they are

4. They can disagree or be upset with someone and still be loved

5. Uncomfortable feelings don’t need to be fixed right away

6. Home is the one place they don’t have to impress anyone
