“We’re seeing a shift towards lighter, brighter kitchen spaces, with greater emphasis on the kitchen as a social hub within the home,” says Lizzie Beesley, head of design & style at Howdens.
“Designs are increasingly balancing practical appliance and storage requirements with areas to sit, gather and interact.”
Indeed, she says lifestyle enhancing products, such as boiling water taps and wine coolers, are becoming more desirable, while clever behind-the-door storage solutions are helping customers make the most of their space.
“Natural, fresh finishes continue to dominate, from soft pebble tones and calming greens to warm oak and walnut décors, paired with rich, statement worktops that add depth and definition.
“Summer is also encouraging homeowners to experiment more with their kitchen environment, embracing a relaxed and inviting aesthetic,” suggests Beesley, with more than 24 years’ experience in the interiors industry, creating award-winning kitchens which combine style with everyday practicality.
For a fresh new vibe, she says the warm minimalism trend has been inspired by the Italian look. “It relies on a signature combination of warm neutrals, woodgrains and soft lighting.”
“Smart storage, glazed units and ergonomic design are all considered as part of the overall layout.”
“This is the luxury look for a modern aesthetic and therefore a key area of innovation. We see matt metallics, pocket doors, marbles and warm stones being used.
“It’s also a key look for handleless and J-Pull kitchen cabinet styles,” she adds.
How to embrace warm minimalism without blowing the budget
To achieve the warm minimalist look without replacing your entire kitchen, a few simple updates can make a big difference.
“Start by introducing a warmer palette through neutral tones, woodgrains, and natural stone finishes,” suggests Beesley.
“Small changes such as replacing your worktop or updating your cabinet frontals in a softer, warmer colour can instantly transform the space.”
She says you can also refresh the overall feel of the room through decorative updates such as repainting the walls in warm, earthy shades, and consider installing new flooring.
Think wood floors in a natural grain, oak parquet, or warm herringbone in a luxury vinyl tile.
“I especially love woodgrains and natural stone, as they instantly bring warmth, texture, and character to a space,” highlights Beesley.
She continues: “Don’t underestimate the impact of styling either – updating accessories such as vases, chopping boards, and kitchen décor can help your kitchen.
“Most importantly, to truly achieve a minimalist aesthetic, focus on reducing visual clutter… keep surfaces clear, store everyday items neatly away, and create a calm, uncluttered environment.”
How to boost the look
The key to achieving a warm minimalist look lies in the finishing touches to truly elevate your kitchen, highlights Beesley.
“Introduce warm metallics or matte black finishes through taps, handles, rails, and light switches to create a cohesive and considered design.
“These subtle details help tie the whole space together and add sophistication.”
Moreover, she says lighting also plays an essential role in elevating the room. “Illuminate key areas such as beneath wall cabinets or within decorative glazed units to create focal points and atmosphere.
“Functional lighting inside larder units can improve practicality and add a premium feel.” She continues. “Also, consider how you light an island or dining area… a streamlined pendant will enhance the minimalist aesthetic.”
Planning your new space
As well as investing in wall-to-wall cabinets, Beesley suggests looking at storage differently “by prioritising pantries, coffee nooks and alternative shelving.
“A pantry can serve as a breakfast space for example, storing a toaster along with condiments, and the items we use day-to-day… but don’t always want on display.”
“By contrast, a coffee nook can make a feature of a space families know they use throughout the day and want constant access to.”
Finally, she says to consider the room as a whole when creating a warm minimalist space…
“Elements such as flooring, wall treatments, internal door styles, and window furnishings all contribute to the overall look and feel, helping to create a calm, balanced, and beautifully cohesive interior.”
