Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, has decided to step down from his position and requested cessation from the services of India’s largest private-sector lender, effective December 31, 2026. The bank’s Board of Directors has accepted his request and will submit it to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for final regulatory approval.
In a regulatory filing on Saturday, the private lender stated that Bharucha submitted a formal request to cease his duties at the close of business on December 31. The decision to quit comes days before rival ICICI Group veteran Anup Bagchi takes over as Managing Director and Chief Executive of HDFC Bank on October 27. He was reportedly in the race to be elevated as the MD and CEO.
The decision was reviewed and respected by both the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board during their meetings, following which the formal transition process was initiated. Placing Bharucha’s three-decade legacy on record, the Board lauded his pivotal stewardship in shaping the lender’s financial foundation.

The Board noted that Bharucha played a significant role in the overall growth of HDFC Bank and made enduring contributions to its balance-sheet strength, risk management standards, and core credit architecture.
Bharucha, widely considered one of the bank’s key institutional pillars, has overseen wholesale banking, credit, and critical risk operations through several financial cycles. His planned year-end departure marks an important leadership transition for HDFC Bank as it prepares its top-deck structure heading into the new year.
