United States attacking midfielder Gio Reyna has been dropped from the upcoming international window due to an unspecified injury, U.S. Soccer announced on Saturday.
On Friday — just two days after being selected to the USMNT camp — Reyna exited Strasbourg‘s 3-1 loss with what was an apparent thigh injury. The 23-year-old had scored in the 67th minute of the match, but then signaled to the sideline three minutes later for a substitution due to a discomfort in his left thigh.
Reyna then walked off the pitch and went straight down the tunnel.
In his place, Stoke City’s Jack McGlynn will now take the Strasbourg player’s spot at the national team camp that will prepare for this month’s two-legged Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal games against Haiti on Nov. 14 and Nov. 17.
Without Reyna, the USMNT are now without a figure who has rapidly stepped up as a leading figure both on and off the pitch in recent games.
Once seen as an exciting teenage prospect that was unable to hit the heights that were expected of him, Reyna has turned things around since the summer’s World Cup with consistent appearances for both club and country.
That said, the former Borussia Dortmund player also has a lengthy history of injury issues, which have led to similar moments in which progress has been stalled.
