Frank Welker got candid about his iconic Megatron role.
As 1986’s animated The Transformers: The Movie returns to theaters to mark its 40th anniversary, it is worth noting that Frank voiced Megatron who is a leader of the enemy faction and several other characters while Peter provided the voice for Optimus Prime who is a leader of the heroic fiction.
Speaking with People Magazine, Frank opened up about how the character Megatron gradually took shape for him, saying, “big hunk of evil metal appealing because it was so different than most of the characters.”
He went on to say, “Honestly, in the first season, I was just trying to get the flow of the show; there were a lot of characters, and I was playing both Autobots and Decepticons.”
Adding, “I really felt I was growing into Megatron and developing the character, but it took time.”
“It was my vocal and creative decision from the start,” Welker explains. “The studio did not change or wish to change anything about him…I think when the sound or voice of the character is your own creation it makes it more meaningful and visceral.” Frank revealed to the outlet.
Further reflecting on the vocal contrast and chemistry, Frank said, “Peter’s big resonant voice, against my high scratchy thin voice, gave a dynamic vocal separation,”
“I think Prime being the ultimate hero and leader and having Megatron as the devious, evil opponent made good drama,” he added.
Recalling their first read of the script, the veteran voice actor said, “I think the film confused us both as we read the script for the first time at the session.”
As Peter stepped away from the role for a period, Frank shared, “We were surprised at the direction they were going with Optimus. So glad when Peter returned later in the TV series and took Prime forward…the rest is history.”
For those unaware, Peter Cullen died on August 26, 2026 at the age of 85.
The longtime Megatron voice revealed that his friendship with Peter “was a gift,” and they had “deep affection and respect for one another.”
Moreover they were “always crazy and fun.”
“I’ve enjoyed the people I have had the privilege of working with during those many years, but none more than my friend, the remarkable Peter Cullen,” Frank remarked.
