Cardinals move forward with Gardner Minshew as new starting QB

The Arizona Cardinals are moving forward with veteran Gardner Minshew as the team’s new starting quarterback, coach Mike LaFleur said Monday.

Minshew will get the nod over Jacoby Brissett starting Sunday against the Seahawks in Seattle. Rookie Carson Beck, whom Arizona drafted in the third round, will serve as the backup while Brissett moves to third-string.

The decision comes after Minshew replaced Brissett late in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, helping to spark a come-from-behind 33-30 win in overtime.

Arizona trailed 17-3 at the time of the QB switch, having failed to score a touchdown in its first two trips to the red zone. Minshew went on to score three times inside the 20-yard line. He finished with 188 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air.

Minshew brought Arizona back from a two-touchdown deficit to tie the score at 30 with six seconds left on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Michael Wilson.

“He did a good job,” LaFleur said of Minshew after the game Sunday. “Obviously extended a few plays, stuff like that, but I thought his timing was great. I mean he’s had a lot of success in this league and he’s about as resilient as they come, too. If you ask Gardner Minshew, he’s ready at all times. I thought the guys made some plays for him and he was getting the ball out of his hands.”
