Blood moon lunar eclipse August 2026: Timings, viewing guide, what to expect

A deep partial lunar eclipse is set to transform August’s Sturgeon Moon into a striking reddish-orange spectacle visible across North America on the night of August 28-28, 2026.

Around 96% of the moon’s surface will remain in Earth’s darkest shadow during this week’s lunar eclipse.

Although it is technically a partial eclipse, it appears nearly total, creating a dramatic “Blood Moon” effect that has captivated skywatchers for centuries.

Why the Moon turns red

The mesmerizing crimson glow occurs as Earth’s atmosphere filters sunlight during the eclipse. Shorter blue wavelengths scatter while longer red and orange light goes through the atmosphere and bends toward the lunar surface.

NASA explains: “It’s as if all the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon.”

When and where to watch

The eclipse starts around 9:34 p.m. CT on August 27, with the moment of greatest eclipse occurring at 11:12 p.m. CT. The entire event is set to span around three hours. The eclipse will only be visible across North and South America, as well as parts of Europe and Africa.

Unlike a solar eclipse, these events are completely safe to view without protective eyewear. But for improved views, such as sharp details of crater rims slipping in and out of shadow, use binoculars or a small telescope.

The eclipse coincides with August’s full “Sturgeon Moon,” a name derived from Native American traditions referencing the giant lake sturgeon abundant in the Great Lakes during this time of year.
