Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany improving ‘day by day,’ but no return date yet

Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks said head coach Vincent Kompany is in good spirits and improving “day by day” after being hospitalized last week.

Kompany collapsed at the club’s training ground on Friday and missed Sunday’s 3-1 win away at Freiburg.

Sporting director Max Eberl said on Friday that it would be “weeks, not days” before the Belgian coach was able to return to work, but, speaking at a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s German Cup clash with Magdeburg, Danks said he had visited Kompany and he was doing well.

“I popped in to see Vincent briefly yesterday,” he said. “He’s in good spirits. It looks as though things are improving day by day. There’s no definitive prognosis.

“He’s very calm and is being given plenty of time to recover. We had some good chats, but they had nothing to do with football or tactics. He asked how we were getting on.”

Harry Kane could make his first appearance since being crowned Ballon d’Or winner when Bayern play second-tier Magdeburg in the second round of the cup.

“He [Kompany] actually phoned me [on Monday] morning, phoned me bright and early at 9 a.m. and I was just out of bed thankfully,” Kane said after the ceremony in London on Monday.

“He just wanted to wish me all the best and good luck. I asked him how he was doing. He said he feels good and feels like he is on the mend, so I know he is the type of character that just wants to be back with the team already, out on the training field, out on the bench with us but it’s important that he rests.

“He’s been going through a bit of a tough time with his health recently. The staff can cover it when he’s not there, but looking forward to going back to Munich to see him, to see all the staff, all my teammates.

“I have spoken about how this is theirs as much as ours so to celebrate with them a little bit, it will be special.”

Kane was asked whether he saw his long-term future at the Allianz Arena or if he would consider returning to England to try and challenge Alan Shearer’s 260-goal Premier League record.

“Bayern is such a great club, we have an amazing team, a great coach, so right now that is where my focus is and I am extremely happy to be winning awards like this,” Kane said.

“It shows why I made the move in the first place. Of course there is always ambition, always dreams and new things.

“I’ve learnt you don’t have much of a say, you just have to go with the flow and see where it takes you.”
