Jayden Daniels fires back at LSU with cease-and-desist after Pickett gets No. 5

Washington Commanders star QB Jayden Daniels’s attorney has hit back after reports emerged that DJ  Pickett gets the No. 5.

The centre of the controversy is reports that suggest that the LSU Tigers are allowing sophomore cornerback Pickett to wear a No. 5 jersey.

Daniels wore it when he won LSU’s third Heisman Trophy in 2023.

The Tigers’ decision has now turned into a full-blown legal feud after Daniels served a cease-and-desist to the former.

The letter addressed the LSU Tigers athletic director, Verge Ausberry, dated August 5, 2026.

The superstar QB is now reportedly withholding permission for LSU to use his name, image, and likeness after he felt “profoundly disrespected”.

A statement from Daniels’ spokesperson stated that “The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU’ decision to give Jayden’s number to another player.”

“Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honoured and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university,” the statement read.

Daniels’ jersey hasn’t been retired by the Tigers; it’s the first time a player has worn No. 5 since he left the program for the NFL, per ESPN.
