Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal parted ways a long time back, but their breakup is once again being dissected on social media, alongside his current relationship with Gracie Abrams, after Bridgers allegedly wrote about it in a new song.
The Boygenius musician, 31, is releasing her new album, Lost Weekend, on August 14, and early listeners and reviewers heard a song which is seemingly about Abrams replacing the Scott Street hitmaker in Mescal’s life.
The layered lyrics went viral on social media which go, “she can pretend to be me since she took my place in my bed, on that stage,” and fans began to pick them apart and find references.
Running to the comments, one fan wrote, “LIKE THERES LAYERS TO THISSSSS,” and Girl aren’t you the one who cheated on him with Bo Burnham,” referring to the Normal People star and Bridgers’ split.
Another added, “i love her, but didn’t she broke her engagement with Paul to then date Bo Burnham? i mean… Paul was devastated and Free Now by Gracie is about how broken he was and even rejected her because of it…”
A third chimed in, “That’s a level of petty that deserves an award.”
While one reasoned, “gracie isn’t in the wrong for dating phoebe’s ex-fiancé. he was single, and their relationship developed naturally. phoebe and gracie are industry peers, not close friends, and gracie has always spoken highly of phoebe. phoebe taking subtle digs at gracie is petty.”
Another noted, “there are no ‘subtle digs.’ phoebe is an artist and part of writing is being truthful. phoebe and paul were engaged and they obviously had a complicated breakup and she feels like gracie replaced her. she’s not shading gracie she’s writing about her complex feelings towards her.”
