After finally managing to get Spider-man: Brand New Day to theaters on July 31st, Tom Holland finally dished on what it took, behind the scenes, to make it to this point.
For those unversed, back in 2019 there was a breakdown between Sony and Disney, whereby their co-financing agreement towards the Spider-man franchise fell through.
To ensure the superhero saw the silver screen again, Holland is said to have contacted both giants and help broker a peace deal of sorts.
As part of his efforts he’s said to have requested the email of Disney’s CEO Bob Iger, which then was what made the call possible.
Eventually a mix of fan outrage and Holland’s intervention sparked final ditch effort, to return to the drawing board.
Now, years later, the host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast Josh Horowitz dropped the question, “2019 is kind of a down moment in the midst of a great movie. There’s a small period of time where you think Spider-Man is no longer going to be a part of the MCU– put me in your head during that time period.”
Holland responded by saying, “I think I was probably more confused than I was down. In my eyes, everything between the two studios was fantastic. First movie went really well. The borrowing of the character for Civil War seemed to be a big success.”
Near the end he also said, “I still had a great sense of confidence that whatever we would do with that second movie would be great and would be really fun, and it was made very aware to me that they weren’t moving on from me. It was just that the relationship between like mom and dad had fallen apart a little bit, and I think, you know, both of the studios chatted with each other and figured it out and recognized that the character would service both studios in a really good way… I don’t really know, but I just know that I always had confidence in the character and Amy and Tom and Rachel.”
