Prince Harry makes fresh move to revive bitter privacy battle against publisher

Prince Harry has joined a group of high-profile figures in taking their legal battle against the publisher of the Daily Mail to the next stage, after applying for permission to appeal the dismissal of their privacy claims.

The Duke of Sussex, alongside Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, has challenged the rulings made by Mr Justice Nicklin, who dismissed their claims against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) earlier this year.

In a statement issued on Friday on behalf of all six claimants, the group confirmed that applications had been filed with the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn both the dismissal of their cases and a separate order requiring them to pay ANL’s legal costs on an indemnity basis.

The statement read: “We confirm that the Claimants have today filed applications with the Court of Appeal for permission to appeal the judgments of Mr Justice Nicklin in respect of his dismissal of their claims and the indemnity costs order.

“The Claimants respectfully disagree with those unprecedented decisions, which they consider to be legally and factually flawed.”

The legal action centred on allegations that ANL had been responsible for unlawful information-gathering practices, including the alleged use of private investigators.

The publisher strongly denied the accusations, which were examined during an 11-week trial in London earlier this year.

However, in his judgment delivered on 7 July, Mr Justice Nicklin ruled that the claimants had failed to establish their cases and dismissed all the claims.
