Sensex Today: Indian stocks opened lower on Monday as a cautious mood prevailed in the market. The BSE Sensex index was trading at 82,317 levels, down by 310 points or 0.38 per cent in early deals, and the NSE Nifty50 was at 25,437, falling 34 points or 0.13 per cent.
In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap index slipped 0.56 per cent, and the Nifty SmallCap index dropped 1 per cent.
Global Cues
Equity markets across the Asia-Pacific region were mostly lower in early trade on Monday, a trend that could weigh on domestic sentiment.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.1 per cent after data showed the country’s economy expanded less than expected in the fourth quarter, though it managed to avoid a technical recession. Japan’s GDP grew 0.2 per cent year-on-year during the October–December period, well below expectations of 1.6 per cent growth.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.67 per cent, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.27 per cent higher. Financial markets in South Korea and mainland China remained closed for a holiday.
On Friday, US markets ended mixed. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.05 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.22 per cent. The indices saw limited movement after US consumer price index (CPI) data largely met market expectations.
In commodities, gold and silver futures traded lower during the thinly traded Asian session on Monday, with gold down 0.12 per cent and silver falling 2 per cent.
