KARACHI:

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed on a strong bullish note on Friday with the KSE-100 Index settling at 185,099, up 3,643 points as geopolitical calm fuelled market momentum.

“Market momentum strengthened as geopolitical uncertainty eased following the US President’s statement indicating reduced chances of escalation in the Middle East, prompting across-the-board buying,” said Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd.

On the macro front, petrol and high-speed diesel prices remained unchanged at Rs253.17 per litre and Rs257.08 per litre, respectively, as lower ex-refinery prices were offset by higher petroleum levies, while the Inland Freight Equalisdation Margin edged down slightly. Oil marketing company margins stayed flat at Rs7.87 per litre, with prices effective from 16–31 Jan 2026.

Additionally, output of Large Scale Manufacturing Industries grew 10.4% in Nov’25. The Sensitive Price Indicator for the week ended on Thursday rose 3.87% and 0.25% yearly and weekly basis respectively.

OGDC, PPL, HUBC, ENGROH, and FFC led index gains, contributing 1,389 points. Market participation remained healthy, with volumes crossing 956 million shares and turnover Rs69 billion. AHCL topped the volume chart with 72.9m shares traded.

The PSX experienced a week of consolidation, as the KSE-100 Index posted a modest gain of 689 points. The index opened the week at 180,045, touched an intraday high of 185,209, and recorded a low of 180,590 before ultimately settling at 185,099.

Going forward, the market may retest 187,905 (an all-time high) next week, provided geopolitical calm persists.

Carrick given Manchester derby baptism | The Express Tribune

MANCHESTER:

Michael Carrick has the chance to make a fine first impression to his short-term stint as Manchester United manager by derailing local rivals Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge on Saturday.

City, meanwhile, have the chance to cut the gap on leaders Arsenal to three points at Old Trafford, while United need the points to boost their chances of Champions League football next season.
At the other end of the table, Tottenham’s Thomas Frank and West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo are fighting to save their jobs as the sides clash in a London derby.

AFP Sport looks at three talking points ahead of the weekend action:

Carrick meets challenge ‘head on’

Carrick faces a baptism of fire with the Premier League’s top two the opponents for his first two matches in charge of United.
“It’s what we live for (big games) – some are more challenging than others but it’s why we are here. So we’ll go for it head on,” said Carrick.
Before a daunting trip to Arsenal next weekend, the former United and England midfielder has the chance to galvanise a season at risk of coming completely off the rails.
An FA Cup exit to Brighton last weekend followed a run of just one win in six league games for United either side of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.

The Red Devils, however, remain well in contention for a place in next season’s Champions League, just three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool.
Carrick was unbeaten in a previous three-game interim spell at United after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.
Since then he gained far more managerial experience at second-tier Middlesbrough, but was sacked in June for failing to achieve promotion to the Premier League.
“I understand the job, what it entails and the responsibility of it,” added Carrick. “Now I feel in a strong place to move forward and, hopefully, be successful here.”

Jobs on the line
Both Frank and Nuno have defied speculation over their futures to remain in charge for Saturday’s clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs have won just four of their last 17 games in all competitions to slip to 14th in the Premier League and bow out of both domestic cups.
Frank is on the brink of joining a long list of managers who have failed to make the grade in north London, including Nuno, who lasted just 17 games as Tottenham boss in 2021.
The Portuguese coach, already sacked once this season by Nottingham Forest, has managed just two wins in 16 Premier League games since joining the Hammers in September.
West Ham desperately need a quick upturn in results as they sit seven points adrift of safety in 18th place,

Can Arsenal fell Forest?
Top of both the Premier League and Champions League, the Gunners are on course for an unprecedented quadruple after FA and League Cup victories this week.
But Mikel Arteta’s men must overcome a poor record at the City Ground against a Forest side keen to make amends to their furious manager.
Arsenal have won in just one of their last five visits to Nottingham.
Forest were dumped out of the FA Cup by second-tier Wrexham on penalties last weekend, sparking an outburst from Sean Dyche.
“It’s unacceptable to me, but it’s unacceptable to the badge as well,” he said of his side’s first-half performance left them battling back from 2-0 down before drawing 3-3.

PSB begins transparent scrutiny of hockey clubs | The Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has formally initiated the scrutiny of hockey clubs to ensure that the forthcoming elections of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) are conducted in a transparent and credible manner, strictly in line with the PSB-PHF Constitution, recommendations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination, and the mutually agreed election framework between PSB and PHF.

A PSB Spokesperson, while referring to certain media impressions and reports, categorically clarified that PSB is not favouring any group, individual, or faction in the ongoing scrutiny process. The spokesperson stated that the scrutiny is being conducted strictly on merit, documentary evidence and verification criteria, and that any contrary impression is incorrect and misleading.

He emphasized that for the first time in Pakistan’s hockey election history, such a structured, verifiable and transparent scrutiny of clubs is being conducted which is unprecedented and is a direct outcome of the institutional reforms and transparency-driven governance measures introduced  by the current Director General, PSB, Mr. Yasir Pirzada.

The Spokesperson further stated that PSB has initiated the scrutiny process on the basis of the record/data of existing clubs already submitted to the Standing Committee. The scrutiny is being conducted through a Committee comprising one PSB nominee (to be nominated district-wise) and one PHF nominee (which is Shahbaz Senior), supported by a defined process of data submission, scrutiny, rectification and finalisation.

During the initial screening, It has emerged that a total of 1,156 clubs were registered on the PHF website portal, out of which, prima facie, 883 clubs are qualified subject to physical verification, having a minimum of 14 players within the prescribed age bracket of 14 to 30 years. Whereas remaining 273 clubs are prima facie non-qualified due to having fewer than 14 players or players outside the prescribed age limits. In addition to this, PHF submitted a list of 85 districts in the Standing Committee that were eligible to vote in the Congress, based on the requirement of having five or more clubs as stipulated under the PHF Constitution. However, a comparison with the data available on the online club registration portal reveals that, out of these 85 districts, 19 districts have fewer than five registered clubs which means prima facie these 19 districts are ineligible to vote in the Congress. The spokesperson added that this development itself reflects the seriousness, impartiality and transparency of the scrutiny exercise

In continuation of the process, PSB will begin physical verification starting from Islamabad/Rawalpindi, from Saturday, 17th January 2026 at Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Islamabad.

After scrutiny, clubs identified with deficiencies or discrepancies will be given a chance to file an objection/appeal, preventing malicious or politically motivated complaints and keeping the process disciplined and fair. Any unresolved objection/appeal will be decided by a Panel of Adjudicators, already notified by the PSB.

Food supplier Greencore completes £1.2 billion Bakkavor takeover

Food supplier Greencore completes £1.2 billion Bakkavor takeover

Greencore has completed its £1.2 billion deal to snap up fellow supermarket supplier Bakkavor.

The London-listed firm completed the deal, which was first agreed in May last year, after receiving court approval on Thursday.

It comes after the firms had to address concerns from the UK’s competition regulator that the move could result in the “substantial lessening of competition” for the supply of chilled supermarket sauces, which could push up prices.

As a result, Ireland-headquartered Greencore said it would sell its only chilled soup and sauces plant in Bristol to the Compleat Food Group.

Earlier this week, Compleat confirmed that it had finalised the acquisition of the business.

The tie-up between Greencore and Bakkavor, structured as a reverse takeover, will form a combined food group with annual sales of about £4 billion which supplies many of the UK’s biggest supermarkets and retailers.

Dalton Philips, chief executive of Greencore, said the firm has been putting in place plans to integrate the two businesses effectively in recent months.

He added: “We are proud today to bring together two great companies to create a UK national convenience food champion.

“In Greencore’s centenary year this is another milestone in a remarkable story.

“I’d like to thank the hard work of the teams at Greencore and Bakkavor that made this combination happen, while continuing to deliver great food for our customers every day.

“With a comprehensive convenience food portfolio across “food for now” and “food for later” we’re really excited by the prospects for our business, and all we can offer our customers and colleagues.”

This simple ‘lemon trick’ can remove bad smells from your oven without chemicals (Image source: AI Generated)

Leaving half a lemon in the oven is a bit of an unusual tip, but it is very helpful. Citrus lemons contain natural elements that can remove any lingering scents and grease found within ovens. These ovens tend to absorb odours from any baked meals, splatters, or burned areas over time. This makes it seem as though your oven is unclean even if it is not. This is a great way to remove odours in your oven without resorting to any harsh chemical products. There are actually two ways to remove unwanted odours, depending upon your personal convenience level: warming up the Lemon along with a splash of water, or allowing it to sit overnight. Both methods target cleaning slightly differently.

Methods to keep the lemon in the oven to remove bad smell

It may not be a miracle cure, but keeping half a lemon in the oven is a totally non-toxic way to soften grime and brighten smells. Since it’s very gentle, environment-friendly, and leaves a fresh citrus scent, this remedy is perfect for regular maintenance of your oven without chemicals.

  • Keeping a lemon in the oven with warm water

    • Slice the lemon in half and put it inside an oven-proof bowl containing warm water.
    • Half the bowl should be filled with water.
    • Heat the oven to a low temperature and let it warm for 20 to 30 minutes.
    • As the warm water steams inside the oven, the citrus and oil from the lemon are diffused throughout due to the steam produced.
    • When the oven is warm, the interior surfaces can be wiped easily with minimal elbow grease, and the scent inside the oven is cleaner.

  • Keeping half a lemon in a cold oven overnight

    • Slice the lemon in half and put it inside a plate/bowl that can withstand being in the oven, and set it in the cold oven.
    • If you leave it for the night, that will be approximately 8-12 hours.
    • During this period, the lemon will have the ability to rid the appliances of the odour, but it won’t have the ability to burn the grease.

Ways to make the lemon cleaning hack better

Fresh lemons should always be used because dried ones lose their natural oils. Ensure loose crumbs or debris are removed before using the lemon method so odours don’t linger. If warming the lemon, avoid high temperatures; gentle heat is more effective and does not allow for burning. Replace the lemon if it dries out or if there is a sour smell. For stronger smells, repeating the process once a week helps maintain freshness.

When lemon can’t remove heavy oven grease

Lemon is great for deodorising and for light cleaning, but it’s not going to take off heavy buildups of grease or years of burnt residue. In these cases, lemon works best as a maintenance solution rather than a deep cleaner. For stubborn stains, pairing lemon steam with baking soda paste or a deeper manual clean is more effective. Once the oven is thoroughly cleaned, using lemon can help keep it fresh and reduce buildup in the future.

Australia removes 4.7M kids from social media platforms in first month of historic ban

Australia removes 4.7M kids from social media platforms in first month of historic ban

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Social media companies have removed access to millions of accounts belonging to children in Australia in the first month since the country’s historic ban took effect, requiring platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok to identify and deactivate users under the age 16.

Access was revoked for roughly 4.7 million users, according to Australian officials, who on Friday touted the early success of the law, which was enacted in mid-December amid fears surrounding the impact of online environments on young people.

“Today, we can announce that this is working,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said during a news conference. “This is a source of Australian pride. This was world-leading legislation, but it is now being followed up around the world.”

Under the law, 10 social media giants — Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, Snapchat, Kick, Reddit, Threads, Twitch and YouTube — must locate and deactivate accounts of Australian users under the age of 16. The companies face fines of up to $33 million if they don’t take “reasonable steps” to remove underage users.

“We stared down everybody who said it couldn’t be done, some of the most powerful and rich companies in the world and their supporters,” said Australian communications minister Anika Wells. “Now Australian parents can be confident that their kids can have their childhoods back.”

According to Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, there are roughly 2.5 million Australians between the ages of 8 and 15, with about 84% of 8 to 12-year-olds having at least one social media account. While the total number of accounts across platforms is unknown, Inman Grant said the number of deactivated or restricted accounts was encouraging.

“We’re preventing predatory social media companies from accessing our children,” she said at a news conference.

Critics of the new ban have argued that it will be difficult to enforce, and Inman Grant acknowledged that there are still some active underage accounts.

“We don’t expect safety laws to eliminate every single breach. If we did, speed limits would have failed because people speed, drinking limits would have failed because, believe it or not, some kids do get access to alcohol,” she said.

She added that based on data reviewed by her office, there was an increase in downloads of alternative apps after the ban began, but not a spike in usage.

Social media platforms can verify age by either requesting copies of identification documents, using a third party to apply age estimation technology to an account holder’s face, or making inferences from data already available, such as how long an account has been active.

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads, said earlier this week that it had removed nearly 550,000 accounts belonging to users it believed were under the age of 16 just one day after the ban began.

While the law was popular among parents and child safety campaigners, online privacy advocates and groups representing teenagers largely came out against it.

Other countries have weighed similar measures in step with Australia, and some American lawmakers have also signaled their interest in pursuing social media restrictions in the U.S.

“I think we ought to look at what Australia’s doing, for example, requiring access to these social media platforms to not be available to anybody under the age of 16,” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said last month.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., previously said that “protecting children is an avenue that should be pursued.”

“I won’t rule out some sort of limitation in sales or distribution or use of those devices… Parents and grandparents need a helping hand; this is getting out of hand,” he said.

Robert Downey Jr. hails Timothée Chalamet as ‘one of the greats’

Robert Downey Jr. gave Timothée Chalamet validation that he has reached the level of excellence he’s been striving for.

The Dune star has long spoken openly about his “pursuit of greatness” and now, he’s gotten a major seal of approval from the legend.

During a recent Q&A for Marty Supreme, the Avengers: Doomsday star didn’t hold back, calling the newly minted Golden Globes Best Actor winner “one of the greats.”

“You’ve talked a lot lately about this,” Downey, 60, said about Chalamet’s great ambitions. “I am literally twice your age. When I was 30, I was making a movie with Norman Jewison.”

He recalled, “It was called Only You. Me and Marisa Tomei. We were on the Amalfi coast somewhere and I just go to Norman Jewison, you know Moonstruck and all these great movies, I go, ‘Norman, I think I am one of the greats.'”

“I want you to tell me if you agree with that.” the Iron Man lead continued. “He looked at me like I was nuts. He said, ‘Well, Mr. Downey, that remains to be seen.'”

“And I want to say in front of God and everyone in this audience here with you that as of Marty Supreme, it no longer remains to be seen. Let’s hear it for, Timothée Chalamet,” he added.

For the unversed, the 30-year-old French-American actor openly told the industry about wanting to be a great actor during his acceptance speech at the 2025 SAG Awards.

“I can’t downplay the significance of this award, because it means the most to me,” Chalamet said in his acceptance speech after he won best actor for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

“I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I am inspired by the greats,” he added.

It is pertinent to note that Marty Supreme has shattered one record after another since opening over the holidays.

Its latest box office milestone came Tuesday when passing up Leonardo DiCaprio’s rival Oscar contender One Battle After Another to end the day with an estimated cume of $72.27 million, according to A24.

The newly released film Marty Supreme earned Chalamet his first Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe awards, making him a frontrunner for a Best Actor Oscar at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.

US-Taiwan trade deal: China 'resolutely opposes any agreement'; urges Washington to adhere to one-China principle - The Times of India

China on Friday strongly opposed the recently signed trade agreement between Washington and Taipei, aimed at cutting tariffs on Taiwanese products and boosting the island’s investment in the United States. “China consistently and resolutely opposes any agreement… signed between countries with which it has diplomatic relations and the Taiwan region of China,” ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said. The Asian giant further urged Washington to adhere to the one-China principle. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. The United States and Taiwan finalised a trade deal on Thursday (local time), lowering tariffs on Taiwanese goods in exchange for $250 billion in new investments in the US technology sector. The move forms part of US President Donald Trump’s broader trade strategy, which includes agreements with the European Union and Japan, as well as a one-year trade truce with China designed to stabilise relations with the world’s second-largest economy. Under the deal, tariffs on Taiwanese products will drop from 20% to 15%, aligning with rates applied to other Asia-Pacific trading partners, including Japan and South Korea. The US Department of Commerce described the agreement as “a historic trade deal that will drive a massive reshoring of America’s semiconductor sector,” establishing an “economic partnership” to develop world-class industrial parks within the United States. Taiwan’s government confirmed that the agreement would strengthen the “Taiwan model” in the US, helping to expand the island’s technology competitiveness while deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations. Taiwanese companies will specifically invest $250 billion in sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and energy. The deal also exempts certain imports from tariffs, including generic pharmaceuticals and aircraft components, while Taiwanese semiconductor firms investing in the US will receive favourable tariff treatments. Beijing had already criticised the arrangement before its announcement, calling it “an economic plunder” by the US on Taiwan.
