Five killed as part of Gul Plaza collapses after hours-long blaze; rescue efforts underway

KARACHI: At least five people were killed after a massive fire broke out at the Gul Plaza shopping mall on Karachi’s MA Jinnah Road late on Saturday night, officials said.

The blaze, still raging, has continued for over 10 hours, during which a portion of the building collapsed on Sunday morning due to intense heat, according to rescue officials.

The chief fire officer said that around 60% of the blaze at Gul Plaza has been brought under control, but firefighters are still unable to enter the building due to extreme heat.

He added that the intense temperature inside the structure is preventing internal access, hampering rescue and search efforts.

The officer further said that the plaza is sealed from all sides and lacks any proper ventilation system, complicating firefighting operations.

Speaking to Geo News, District South Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso said that the fire has erupted again in the back of the first floor of the building.

“There are fears that people are on the first and mezzanine floors,” said Khoso, adding that the rescue teams have not been able to reach these floors.

Noting that there is no way to exit in case of an emergency, the DC said that investigation is underway to find out why an emergency exit was not made in the building.

“We will check the map and other things with the relevant institutions.”

“It was directed to ensure fire extinguishers [in building], but they were not present in the building,” the official added.

People still trapped

Meanwhile, Sindh Emergency Service Rescue 1122 Chief Operating Officer Dr Abid Jalaluddin Shaikh said that 20 fire tenders and four snorkels are taking part in firefighting operations from three sides of Gul Plaza.

Noting that all available technical equipment is being used to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible, the rescue official added that materials stored inside the plaza are making it difficult for rescue teams to control the blaze.

Fire brigade officials feared that several people were still trapped inside the mall.

“We cannot say at this stage how many people are still trapped inside the building,” the official added.

Shaikh added that a portion of the building’s rear side has collapsed, increasing the risk for both trapped individuals and rescue workers.

The presence of air conditioning shops in the building is creating additional challenges for firefighters, he said.

The blaze quickly spread inside the old building because of certain flammable material stored there, he said, confirming that due to the intense heat, a pillar of the building collapsed, raising fears that more parts of the structure could cave in.

Separately, revealing details of evacuation, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza has said 25 people have been evacuated from the building so far.

Recurring blaze

Earlier, authorities had said that hours of firefighting efforts had stopped the blaze from spreading further, but it had nevertheless reached the third floor before being contained.

Soon after the fire brigade said the fire had been contained, conflagration again erupted with long flames coming out from the first floor.

Video footage showed flames engulfing several shops as firefighters worked to extinguish them.

The chief fire officer said that people trapped inside the shopping mall were evacuated with the help of snorkels.

The firefighting operation was temporarily paused in the early hours of Sunday before being resumed 15 minutes later.

A powerful explosion took place inside the premises after which the blaze further broke out, according to the chief fire officer, adding that the explosion was caused by gas leakage.

Sindh Rangers personnel, as per the spokesperson, are also taking part in rescue efforts alongside other emergency services.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

Govt response

Addressing the incident, Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed said that all available resources are being provided for the rescue operation.

The government is making every effort to extinguish the blaze as quickly as possible, the spokesperson added.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, who later arrived on the spot to inspect the relief and rescue operation, has directed a report on the incident and expressed concern over the fire.

He has directed relevant authorities to ramp up rescue and relief operations.

Talking to Geo News, Governor Tessori said that more than 100 people are reported to be trapped inside the burning building that houses around 1,200 shops.

“Our priority is to save the lives of those trapped in the building,” he said.

He described the fire as “not ordinary”, saying it had engulfed the building from all four sides.

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed grief over the loss of life and property damage in the conflagration.

The PPP chief offered his condolences to the families of those who died in the blaze.

Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has called for alternative traffic routes to be established to ensure safe passage for residents.

He has also directed the SSP City to investigate the cause of the fire and instructed officials to prevent the flames from spreading further.

The minister underscored the need to keep access routes clear for fire brigade vehicles and emergency personnel.

Hours after the fire broke out, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab expressed his sorrow over the loss of life in the tragedy.

“We stand with the families of those who died during this difficult time,” Wahab said.

Traders’ concerns

Meanwhile, traders have expressed concerns over the rescue efforts with Gul Plaza Traders’ Association President Tanveer Pasta telling Geo News that nearly 80 to 100 people are believed to be trapped inside the building after the deadly fire.

All customers exited the building, but staff and shopkeepers were still thought to be inside, said Pasta, adding that the building houses 1,200 shops and the fire has caused losses worth billions of rupees.

He criticised the response from senior government officials, saying neither the chief minister nor the mayor of Karachi contacted the traders. “Only Governor Sindh has come so far, no one else,” he said.

He claimed that no rescue personnel had yet entered the building, and that the fire continues to burn on three sides of the structure.

The fire reportedly started in a shop selling artificial flowers located on the ground floor, he added.

Bridgerton’s Claudia Jessie says her real-life style is nothing like Eloise’s

Bridgerton’s Claudia Jessie says her real-life style is nothing like Eloise’s

Claudia Jessie has little interest in dressing like her Bridgerton character off-camera.

The 36-year-old actress, who has played Eloise Bridgerton since the series debuted in 2020, said her personal style is far removed from the corsets and gowns seen on screen.

“I feel like in our real life, have we started wearing corsets or been inspired by it in our real life? I’ve got to be honest. I want to get straight into a tracksuit as soon as I’m done [filming],” she joked with People at the Bridgerton season 4 premiere in Paris.

She added that wearing corsets in real life holds no appeal for her. Jessie joked that while she has no intention of adopting Eloise’s wardrobe, she would be curious to see reactions if she showed up at a pub dressed head to toe in Regency attire.

“Although, I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t mind turning up in a pub just dressed like full Regency [era-inspired]. See what happens. Just go loose,” she told the magazine.

Bridgerton is known for its eye-catching costumes, from ball gowns to corsets, which are as iconic as its romance. The show mixes period styles with a modern look.

Season 1 costume designer Ellen Mirojnick previously explained that the wardrobe drew inspiration from Regency-era art while aiming for an aspirational look. The costume department created thousands of pieces, from accessories to full ensembles, to dress the show’s expansive cast.

Despite the elaborate designs, Jessie has said the costumes are more comfortable than they appear. She noted that most of the difficulty comes from what viewers do not see. She films while wearing mic packs and shapewear beneath the gowns, which can make basic breaks challenging.

Part one of Bridgerton season 4 premieres January 29. The new season introduces Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha, and centers on her romance with Benedict Bridgerton, portrayed by Luke Thompson.

Carrick magic dents Man City Premier League bid | The Express Tribune

LONDON:

Michael Carrick made a flying start to life as Manchester United boss against Manchester City on Saturday but Premier League leaders Arsenal missed a chance to pull nine points clear.

Sorry Tottenham slipped to defeat against relegation-threatened West Ham, further increasing the pressure on beleaguered boss Thomas Frank, while Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Burnley.

Carrick’s first game of his second temporary spell in charge of the Red Devils could barely have gone better in a dominant 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

The former United midfielder was appointed as head coach until the end of the campaign following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.

The 44-year-old, who was also briefly United’s caretaker boss in 2021, said ahead of his first game that there was still “magic” at United, and his team put on a memorable show.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu capped an energetic and incisive display by United, who could have won by a far more comfortable margin.

“Great start. No getting away from that,” said Carrick. “The boys were fantastic.”

“Consistency is the key to any success,” he added. “If you could find that, then you’re onto a winner.”

Guardiola admitted that his team — winless in four league games this year — were outplayed by Carrick’s inspired United.

“The better team won,” said the City boss. “We weren’t at the level required to win this game.”

Arsenal are seven points clear at the top despite being held to a 0-0 draw for the second league game in a row at Nottingham Forest.

A frustrated Arteta, chasing a first Premier League title for the Gunners since 2004, felt that his side should have been awarded a penalty, believing Ola Aina had handled the ball.

“We created four big, big, big chances and a clear penalty, but we weren’t able to win the game,” said the Spaniard.

“I’ve just seen the replays. I think it’s a clear intention to clear the ball inside and it’s a clear penalty so I don’t understand why it’s not been given.”

Third-placed Aston Villa can close to within four points of Arsenal if they beat Everton on Sunday.

Spurs crisis

The mood at Tottenham darkened further after Spurs slipped to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham, who had not won a Premier League match since early November.

Spurs fans turned on Frank and chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” after Callum Wilson struck a stoppage-time winner.

Spurs, 14th in the table, have won just two home league games this season, leaving Frank, in his first campaign in charge, under enormous pressure.

“It’s tough to take, it hurts a lot,” the Spurs boss told Sky Sports. “The boys put everything in, and that’s a sign of a squad that is fighting, doing everything they can to try and win.”

Nuno Espirito Santo’s West Ham finished the day five points behind Forest, who are just above the relegation zone.

Defending champions Liverpool are now unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions but dropped two valuable points against struggling Burnley at Anfield.

Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz scored his third league goal since his arrival but the visitors drew level in the 65th minute when Marcus Edwards placed his shot beyond the reach of Alisson Becker.

“It feels like a defeat,” said Wirtz. “When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals.

“But some days are like this — you try everything but in the end it doesn’t go in the goal.”

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, who replaced the departed Enzo Maresca earlier this month, watched as his side saw off high-flying London rivals Brentford 2-0.

Joao Pedro gave the Blues the lead in the first half and Cole Palmer doubled the advantage from the spot in the 76th minute.

Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 2-1 while Leeds scored late on to beat Fulham 1-0, remaining eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Broncos QB Bo Nix fractures ankle, out for rest of playoffs

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix will miss the remainder of the playoffs after fracturing his ankle in overtime of Saturday’s 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills, coach Sean Payton said.

Nix was injured on the second-to-last play of the game, according to Payton.

Nix’s backup is Jarrett Stidham.

“[Stidham] is ready,” Payton said. “We’ll be ready for the next challenge.”

Stidham, in his third season with Denver and sixth overall in the NFL, appeared in one game this season and has not attempted a pass since 2023.

Nix was 26-of-46 for 279 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 29 yards on 12 carries in the win.

Research shows monkeys fear loss of money the way humans do | - The Times of India

Research into how decisions are made often starts with people. Occasionally, it drifts elsewhere. A study from Yale University points to something familiar showing up in monkeys. The focus is on loss aversion, a pattern where avoiding loss matters more than gaining something new. In controlled tests, capuchin monkeys were observed trading tokens for food while prices and outcomes shifted. Their responses did not appear random. In many cases, they lined up behaviours already well known in human studies. The results suggest that some economic habits may sit deeper than culture or education. They may come from older mental patterns shared across primates, shaped long before modern ideas of money existed in any clear form.

Scientists find that monkeys make the same money mistakes as humans

‘Loss aversion’ is a technical phrase, but the idea is ordinary enough. Losing something tends to feel heavier than gaining the same thing. That feeling influences small choices as well as bigger ones. In the Yale study, researchers were not trying to teach monkeys economics. They were simply watching what happened when choices came with risk.Capuchin monkeys were used because they are alert, social, and quick to learn routines. They were given tokens that could be exchanged for food such as fruit or gelatine cubes. Nothing complicated was added. The setup stayed close to simple exchange, without language or instruction beyond repetition.

Monkeys handled changing prices

In one set of trials, the monkeys were given a limited number of tokens. The cost of food items changed from session to session. Sometimes apples required more tokens. Sometimes fewer. The amount the monkeys could also spend shifted.Their behaviour adjusted with those changes. When prices rose, spending dropped. When budgets grew, spending increased. These events followed a pattern economists would recognise. There was little sign of guessing or confusion. The monkeys appeared to notice cost and respond to it, even when conditions moved around.

Uncertain rewards mattered more

Another experiment focused less on price and more on risk. The monkeys had to choose between two options. One offered a single visible piece of food, with a chance of receiving an extra piece. The other showed two pieces of food, but sometimes one was taken away.On paper, both options were equal. Each had the same chance of ending with one or two pieces. The monkeys did not treat them as equal. They preferred the option that felt like a possible gain, rather than the one that carried the risk of losing something already visible. The pattern closely resembles how people tend to respond in similar situations.

What does this say about economic behaviour

The researchers suggest this combination is worth noting. The monkeys acted sensibly when prices changed but showed bias when loss entered the picture. Rational choice and error appeared side by side. This combination is common in human behaviour. People often manage everyday trade-offs well, yet struggle with risk and uncertainty. The study hints that this mix is not just a product of modern life. It may reflect older decision processes that humans still carry.

Why the findings still matter

The research adds context to how people approach saving and investing. Many avoid risk, even when long-term returns favour it. Loss aversion is one explanation. Seeing the same response in monkeys suggests it may be difficult to override. The study does not argue that these behaviours are wrong. It does not offer advice. It simply shows that the instinct to avoid loss appears to run deeper than markets or training. Where that leaves modern decision-making is less clear, and the work stops short of drawing firm conclusions.Information taken from YaleNews.

Prince William barred from riding e-scooter at his own home!

Prince William barred from riding e-scooter at his own home!

Prince William is not allowed to ride an e scooter in his new abode, it is revealed.

The Prince of Wales, who is often spotted getting across on his mobile scooter, will not be able to use it anymore now that he has moved to the Forest Lodge.

An insider revealed: “William used to love his e-scooter to get around the castle as there was no ban. But of course he’s more than happy and prepared to adhere to the rules on e-scooters in Windsor Great Park.”

This comes as William was spotted on his vehicle on a special episode of Reluctant Traveller docuseries on Apple TV+.

At the time, he told host and actor Eugene Levy: “My father spends a lot of time here but we don’t actually live in the castle.

“We come and use the castle for work and for meetings, and to see people. I’m always late so I thought this was the way to keep my meetings on time,” the expert noted.

The Prince of Wales further continued: “I’m still regularly late, Eugene, anyway. I have managed to get myself a puncture this morning, which is quite amusing. That’s why I was going so slowly up the road.”

Broncos QB Bo Nix breaks ankle during team’s overtime defeat of the Buffalo Bills

Broncos QB Bo Nix breaks ankle during team's overtime defeat of the Buffalo Bills

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix’s season is done after he broke a bone in his right ankle late in the Broncos’ 33-30 overtime win against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

Broncos coach Sean Payton announced postgame Nix sustained the injury only three plays before Denver kicked a game-winning field goal. Jarrett Stidham will now start for Denver, the top seed in the AFC, in the conference championship game next Sunday.

The shocking news came after Nix became the first QB not named Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow to defeat Josh Allen in the postseason this decade.

The Broncos won after a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter and overtime.

After two scoreless drives to open the extra period, Nix led Denver on a 75-yard jaunt for the game-winning score, aided by two pass interference penalties on the Bills. Allen forced overtime by getting Buffalo into field-goal position in the final minute of regulation, but he threw an interception in OT that set up the Broncos’ winning field goal — his fourth turnover of the day.

“It’s extremely difficult, I feel like I let my teammates down tonight,” Allen, while wiping away tears, said postgame.

He added: “It’s been a long season. Hate how it ended. It’s gonna stick with me for a long time.”

For Nix, Saturday’s win was a statement effort in what was only his second career postseason start.

A year after he threw for only 144 yards in a 31-7 loss to the Bills in the wild card round, Nix threw for 279 yards and three scores in a victory.

His most impressive drive of the game came in the fourth quarter. Trailing 27-23, Nix spearheaded an eight-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass to give Denver a 30-27 lead with under a minute to go.

Nix also came through in the final period, as his willingness to throw the ball deep led to two defensive pass interference penalties on Buffalo — one for 17 yards, and another for 30 that put the Broncos inside the 10-yard line.

“He was fantastic when we needed him,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said after.

For Allen, the loss was the latest in a string of devastating defeats for a franchise that’s become synonymous with postseason heartbreak. After losing four straight Super Bowls in the 1990s, Buffalo has now failed to make it back to the championship round for the seventh straight season of Allen’s tenure.

Including Saturday, four of the Bills’ last five playoff losses have come in one-score games, including two in overtime. The combined margin of defeat in those four losses is only 15 points.

Allen’s performance was boom or bust, as every Buffalo drive ended in either a score or a turnover. Allen finished the game 25 of 39 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, running 12 times for another 66 yards. But he also threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles. The four turnovers came at especially inopportune moments, including an ill-advised cough-up right before halftime that gifted Denver three points.

“Just trying to be aggressive, can’t do that,” Allen said of the play.

Allen’s final interception came in overtime when a Bills field goal would have ended the game.

Leading into this postseason, Allen’s playoff defeats had come largely at the hands of some of the conference’s best quarterbacks. But with Mahomes, Burrow and two-time MVP Lamar Jackson all absent from the playoff field, Buffalo appeared to have its most favorable path to its first Super Bowl appearance since the 1993 season.

Instead, Allen — who had gone six straight postseason games without a turnover — gave the ball away four times and was ultimately outdueled by Nix.

“Can’t win with five turnovers,” Allen said. “I fumbled twice, threw two picks. When you shoot yourself in the foot like that you don’t deserve to win football games.”

Said Payton: “We obviously weren’t ready last year, but we were ready today.”

Barack Obama honours Michelle Obama on her 62nd birthday

Michelle Obama marked her 62nd birthday with a public show of affection from her husband, former US President Barack Obama.

Taking to Instagram, Barack shared a tribute to Michelle on Saturday, posting a photo of the couple together and praising her presence and spirit. “Happy birthday to the woman who lights up every room she walks into,” he wrote. “I love you, Miche.”

Michelle responded in the comments. She thanked her husband and those who sent birthday messages. “Love you, Barack!” she wrote. “Thank you all so much for the wonderful birthday wishes.”

The couple’s relationship spans more than three decades. They met while working at the same law firm in Chicago. They married in 1992. They later welcomed two daughters. Malia was born in 1998. Sasha followed in 2001.

Their lives changed dramatically after Barack won the 2008 presidential election. The family moved into the White House in 2009. They remained there through his second term. They left Washington in 2017.

In the years since, Michelle has spoken openly about how their relationship has evolved. In a recent People cover interview, she said they prioritise quiet time together. Date nights often happen at home. No formal plans or getting dressed up. Just dinner, music, and conversation.

Michelle also reflected on turning 60 and entering a new phase of life. She described her sixties as liberating. She said this is the first time her choices feel fully her own. With her daughters grown and her husband settled, she feels free to pursue what she wants.

Now a bestselling author and public figure in her own right, Michelle says this chapter is about agency. This means fewer obligations, more intention, and a renewed sense of self.

Giants begin new era, hire John Harbaugh as head coach

Giants begin new era, hire John Harbaugh as head coach

John Harbaugh, the prize of available head coaching candidates this offseason, is heading to the New York Giants.

The 63-year-old former head coach of the Baltimore Ravens agreed to a 5-year contract to coach Big Blue, CBS News New York has learned.

The team confirmed the news Saturday evening, posting on social media, “The Harbaugh era starts now.” His introductory press conference will be Tuesday at noon.

Harbaugh interviewed with the Giants on Wednesday in New Jersey.

He was one of several known candidates the Giants interviewed, a list that included former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, and Mike McCarthy, who previously led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl title and the Dallas Cowboys to a playoff berth.

Giants welcome Harbaugh as head coach

“We are proud to name John Harbaugh as the next head coach of the New York Giants,” team president John Mara said in a statement. “Joe Schoen presented us an outstanding group of candidates, which allowed us to be deliberate and confident in this decision. Through numerous conversations, John consistently stood out for his conviction and vision for leading a winning organization, and we welcome him and his family to the Giants.”

“John is a proven winner whose teams are disciplined, resilient, and prepared,” Giants chairman Steve Tisch said in a statement. “His passion for the game, his ability to connect with players, and his experience leading at the highest level made him an outstanding fit for us, and we’re excited to move forward together.”

“Throughout our conversations, John stood out for his clarity, competitiveness and approach for building a sustainable winning program. He has a strong track record of developing players, building cohesive staffs, and setting a clear standard of accountability,” general manager Joe Schoen said in a statement. “We are excited to work with John in moving this team in the right direction.”

“I want to thank John Mara, Steve Tisch, Chris Mara, and Joe Schoen for the opportunity to lead the New York Giants,” Harbaugh said in a statement, in part. “To serve as this franchise’s head coach is a tremendous honor. I come from a football family, and I have deep respect for the history and tradition of this organization.”

He continued, “I’m excited to begin assembling our staff and getting to work building our team. I would like to sincerely thank Steve Bisciotti and the Baltimore Ravens organization for 18 remarkable years, including the opportunity to become a head coach in the National Football League. My family and I are grateful for the welcome we’ve already felt, and we look forward to becoming part of the Giants family.”

What to know about John Harbaugh

During his 18-year run with Baltimore, Harbaugh won 180 regular-season games, 13 playoff games and the Super Bowl XLVII championship.

He was fired earlier this month after the Ravens finished 8-9 and missed the postseason, a fate secured by a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final game of the season.

Under Harbaugh, the Ravens made the playoffs 12 times and were known for toughness, professionalism and accountability, traits the Giants hope to develop after going 4-13 in 2025 and missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Prior to taking over as head coach in Baltimore, Harbaugh served as the special teams coach for the Philadelphia Eagles for nine seasons before taking over as defensive backs coach in 2007.

When Harbaugh was hired by the Ravens, he had no head coaching experience at any level, including college. He served as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh, Morehead State, Cincinnati and Indiana, from 1987-97.

John Harbaugh is the older brother of current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh.

What Harbaugh is inheriting with the Giants

Despite their struggles over the last nine seasons, a period that included just one playoff appearance, the Giants remain a very attractive destination because they are one of the NFL’s legacy franchises, due in large part to their three Super Bowl titles and a history that dates to 1925.

The Giants also have some talent at key positions, most notably quarterback. Rookie Jaxson Dart took over as the starter in Week 4 and quickly showed off his dual-threat skills. The 25th overall pick in the draft finished with 2,272 passing yards, with 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 487 yards and nine scores.

New York navigated most of its lost season without two key starters on offense. Receiver Malik Nabers, who had 109 receptions, 1,204 yards and seven TDs as a rookie in 2024, suffered a knee injury in Week 4 and was lost for the season.

Bruising running back Cam Skattebo, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 draft, had 617 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns before he went down with a season-ending ankle injury in Week 6.

Defensively, linebacker Brian Burns, who signed a five-year, $141 million contract as a free agent in 2024, was a standout this season, finishing with 16.5 sacks.

Those bright spots aside, the Giants overall were a middling team on offense, averaging 22.4 points, and among the worst in the league on defense, allowing 25.8 per game.
