How to stay consistent with the gym after the January buzz

How to stay consistent with the gym after the January buzz

At the start of January, many of us are fuelled by New Year’s resolutions and hit the gym with enthusiasm and energy. However, as the months roll on, it’s completely natural for that initial surge of motivation to fade.

The reasons why this happens is multifactorial says Dr Robin Chatterjee, consultant in musculoskeletal, sports and exercise medicine at the Chelsea Outpatient Centre, part of HCA Healthcare UK.

“First of all, the idea of completely changing your lifestyle from doing no exercise and eating a lot to suddenly going to the gym regularly might sound good, but the reality is that it requires commitment, time and money,” reflects  Chatterjee. “Secondly, we are still in winter and the weather is dark, cold and miserable, so the motivation to get out of the house and go to the gym might not be there.

“Also, once people break one resolution, they tend to break all of them.”

To help you bounce back from this, here are some useful tips on how to stay consistent, safe and motivated in your gym workouts for the rest of 2026.

Seek professional advice

Don’t be afraid to seek support. Professionals such as personal trainers are there to help you work towards those long-term goals and can help you stay on track.

“Instead of going to the gym and just randomly using the machines without knowing what you are doing, I would recommend seeking advice from a medical professional or a personal trainer who can make sure that you are doing the exercises in a safe manner,” recommends Chatterjee. “They can also help you set up a plan of goal-directed exercises and support you through that.”

Slowly implement progressive overload

“Doing too much too soon can have consequences,” warns Chatterjee. “This is an extreme example, but if you want to run a marathon and start from doing absolutely nothing and then run your heart out, you’re likely to get some sort of strain or tear because your body isn’t used to doing that amount of exercise.”

Instead, he recommends implementing progressive overload gradually.

“Start off with a low weight that you’re comfortable with and increase the number of sets and reps with that and then you should start notice incremental increases in your strength,” advises Chatterjee.

Focus on your technique

“If you don’t use weights or the machines in the right way, then you’re likely to get an injury, so I would recommend seeking advice and sticking to one routine and perfecting your technique and then slowly building up what you’re doing from there,” advises Chatterjee.

Focus on the mental benefits instead of fixating on the aesthetics

“Don’t expect to get big muscles very quickly, because going to the gym is all about the long game,” says Chatterjee. “You won’t physically feel any different for a long period of time, but you should start to feel mentally and emotionally better straight away as a result of the endorphin rush that you get from exercising.”

Make your training varied and social

“When we do things in groups or in pairs, we tend to be more successful in our outcomes and than if we’re doing it individually, so I would recommend going to a class or getting your friends or family involved,” suggests Chatterjee. “Having somebody to keep track of what you’re doing and to cheer you on can be really helpful.”

Remember to have rest days

“A rest period is really important,” says Chatterjee. “If you do too much too soon, you’re going to end up with an injury. Whereas if you do it in a tailored, structured manner with appropriate rest periods, while still maintaining a regular amount of strength training, that’s going to be your best chance of success.”

Try to go to the gym at out-of-peak hours

“To avoid the busy crowds, consider maybe going to the gym early in the morning or late at night or during school time if you can when there will be less people there,” suggests Chatterjee. “Or maybe change the particular gym that you go to, to one that’s less heavily populated.”

Focus on the health benefits

“Apart from building strength, going to the gym is great for our overall health,” says Chatterjee. “Think about the energy you’re burning, and the positive impacts it’s having on your blood pressure, cholesterol and your mental health.”

Remember that the gym is for everyone

“There’s often this assumption that the gym is full of beefy guys and gym bunnies, but the reality is that lots of different people go to the gym,” says Chatterjee. “Lots of elderly people, women, kids and people who that aren’t particularly in shape go to the gym because we all need to be exercising. Gyms are designed for people from any walks of life.”

Pakistan becomes world’s third-largest rice exporter - SUCH TV

Pakistan’s rice exports rebounded strongly in December 2025, rising 14% month-on-month from November, largely driven by a more than 50% jump in Basmati shipments.

The surge allowed Pakistan to surpass Vietnam and become the world’s third-largest rice exporter for the month, trailing only India and Thailand.

Trade data showed Pakistan exported 489,000 tonnes of rice in December (excluding shipments to Iran), compared with Vietnam’s 387,000 tonnes, marking its best-ever monthly performance.

The UAE remained the top buyer, importing 74,897 tonnes, including 16,850 tonnes of Basmati.

China followed closely with 74,685 tonnes.

Smaller shipments went to Oman, the US, and Canada.

A notable development was Pakistan’s growing presence in Central Asia.

Exports to Kazakhstan surpassed 17,000 tonnes, including 10,300 tonnes of Basmati, while shipments to Uzbekistan reached 10,382 tonnes.

Experts said this reflects a structural shift, with Pakistan now exporting directly to Central Asian countries instead of routing shipments through Afghanistan.

Despite the strong performance, exporters face ongoing challenges.

Shipments to Iraq and Turkiye remain negligible, limiting access to major regional markets.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to develop a comprehensive strategy to boost rice exports and reduce the trade deficit.

Analysts say that global competition, high output from India, rising freight costs, inconsistent policies, and border disruptions have historically hurt the sector.

However, there are positives. Demand from Bangladesh remains strong, and Central Asia is emerging as a promising market.

Additionally, a 50% US tariff on Indian rice has improved Pakistan’s competitiveness in the US market.

In Iran, foreign exchange shortages have shifted import responsibility to local buyers, benefiting Pakistan due to proximity.

‘Victorian Disease’ Scare At Amazon UK Warehouse: What TB Is, Why Unions Want A Shutdown, And What You Need To Know

‘Victorian Disease’ Scare At Amazon UK Warehouse: What TB Is, Why Unions Want A Shutdown, And What You Need To Know

Amazon has acknowledged an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) at its Coventry fulfilment centre in the UK, triggering alarm among workers’ unions and renewed debate over workplace health safety. The bacterial infection, often referred to as a “Victorian disease” due to its association with 19th-century Britain, has prompted calls for the temporary shutdown of the facility.

The GMB union, which represents workers at the site, has raised serious concerns after multiple cases were reported at the warehouse, which employs close to 3,000 people. The union is urging authorities to intervene and halt operations until safety checks are completed.

Amazon Confirms TB Cases, Coordinates With NHS

According to reports, Amazon confirmed that 10 cases of non-contagious tuberculosis were detected at the Coventry facility in September 2025. The company stated it is working closely with the National Health Service (NHS) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to carry out precautionary screening of employees.

Amazon has emphasised that the identified cases are non-contagious, adding that no new infections have been found since. Operations at the warehouse are continuing as usual while screening measures remain in place.

What Is The ‘Victorian Disease’?

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs, though it can also spread to other parts of the body such as the abdomen, lymph nodes, bones, and nervous system if left untreated. The disease earned the label “Victorian disease” because it was widespread during the 1800s, particularly in overcrowded and poorly ventilated environments.

TB is curable with antibiotics, but untreated cases can become severe and even fatal. Health experts stress that early detection and timely treatment are key to recovery.

Possible Symptoms Of Tuberculosis

TB symptoms can vary depending on which part of the body is affected. Some commonly reported signs include:

1. Persistent pain or discomfort

2. Tingling or numbness in parts of the body

3. Muscle stiffness or contractions

4. Loss of mobility in severe cases

5. Fatigue and physical weakness

Medical professionals advise seeking immediate evaluation if symptoms persist, especially after known exposure.

Global TB Impact Remains A Concern

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), tuberculosis claimed over 1.6 million lives in 2021, making it the second deadliest infectious disease globally after COVID-19. Despite being treatable, TB continues to pose a public health challenge worldwide.

‘Overall Risk Is Low,’ Say Health Authorities

Responding to concerns, Amazon stated that it acted swiftly after receiving guidance from health authorities. “In line with best practice safety procedures, we immediately followed guidance from the NHS and UK Health Security Agency and made all potentially affected employees aware of the situation,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Dr Roger Gajraj of UKHSA West Midlands confirmed that testing is being offered to workers who may have had close contact with affected individuals. He added that the overall public health risk remains low and reassured that TB is fully treatable with antibiotics.

Union Pushes For Temporary Shutdown

Despite reassurances, the GMB union continues to demand a temporary shutdown of the warehouse, arguing that worker safety should take precedence until screening is completed and transparency is ensured.

As discussions continue between Amazon, health authorities, and unions, the incident has reignited broader concerns about occupational health standards, infectious disease monitoring, and workplace accountability in large fulfilment centres.

Now, her husband, Travis Clark, admitted on his own Instagram account that he had cheated on her.

‘This is hard to write, but I owe the truth, and I owe an apology,’ Clarke wrote in an Instagram Stories update he posted on Saturday, January 17.

‘I was unfaithful to my wife. I had an affair and repeatedly broke her trust. There is no excuse for what I did. This was my failure and my responsibility alone. I know that words don’t begin to express the damage I caused or the depth of the hurt I’ve brought into her life, but I am truly sorry.’

Big Ten, SEC still deadlocked on College Football Playoff format

Big Ten, SEC still deadlocked on College Football Playoff format

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — With a Friday deadline looming, the Big Ten and SEC remain deadlocked about the future format of the College Football Playoff following Sunday’s annual business meeting of CFP leaders.

“Still more work to do,” Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said as he exited past more than a dozen reporters waiting outside the meeting room of the Lowe’s hotel in South Beach.

The Big Ten and SEC have the bulk of control over the format in 2026 and beyond because of a memorandum of understanding that was signed by the 10 FBS commissioners, including former American Conference commissioner Mike Aresco, and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua. If Petitti and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey can’t agree on a format by Friday — an extended deadline imposed by ESPN, the sole TV rights holder — the playoff will stay at 12 teams for at least another year.

There is overwhelming support in the room for a 16-team playoff to begin as soon as 2026, sources said, but the Big Ten won’t agree to it unless the SEC agrees to a 24-team format three years later. Sankey and Mississippi State president Mark Keenum, the chair of the CFP’s board of managers, have stated publicly that the SEC would prefer a 16-team model. Sources have said Sankey doesn’t want to commit to a 24-team field now, and Sankey wasn’t immediately available for comment following the meeting.

“This was not a deadline day of any kind,” Keenum said after the meeting. “So they’re still talking. We anticipate discussions will continue, and they will make a decision to stay at 12 or go to some other number.”

A 24-team field would require the conferences to eliminate their championship games, and that’s something that has been highly valuable for the SEC. Some in the room also have concerns about how a 24-team field would impact the regular season, sources said. When asked for the SEC’s position on a 24-team field, Keenum said he didn’t want to “get in front of my commissioner as he’s having these conversations on this matter as to what number it will be.”

Mid-American commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said he expects “a lot of conversation” to continue between the Big Ten and SEC this week, but no official meeting is planned as of now for the entire group.

“There’s two conferences that very much will drive where this ship goes,” he said. “Stay tuned.”

One source said a 16-team field is still possible next season but not likely. American commissioner Tim Pernetti said it’s up to Sankey and Petitti to figure it out.

“That’s up to two people in the room to come back with something that we’d all sit down and discuss,” Pernetti said, “but right now, the discussion is ongoing.”

Asia-Pacific markets mostly slipped Monday, as investors assessed threats from the Trump administration toward Greenland over the weekend, as well as key economic data from China out Monday.

Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders exchanged tense rhetoric over the Arctic territory, with Trump threatening tariffs on eight European countries and demanding control of Greenland, which is part of Denmark.

European leaders responded by calling the threats “completely wrong” and “unacceptable.”

Over in Asia, China released its fourth-quarter GDP numbers, along with December figures for retail sales, urban investment and industrial output.

Hong Kong Hang Seng index tumbled 1.07%, and the mainland Chinese CSI 300 fell marginally.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 0.65% and ended at 53,583.57, marking three straight losing sessions, while the Topix was down marginally to 3,656.4. Yields on long term Japanese Government Bonds climbed to fresh records.

The benchmark 10-year JGB yield hit a high of 2.279%, its highest level since 1999. Yields on 20- and 30-year JGBs also hit record highs.

South Korea’s markets bucked the wider trend, with the Kospi up 1.32%, finishing at 4,904.66 while the small-cap Kosdaq gained 1.44% and ended at 968.36.

Automaker Hyundai touched a record high as its shares surged as much as 17.92% Monday.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.33% to 8,874.5, dragged by tech stocks.

On the commodities front, both prices of spot silver and gold hit record highs. Silver was last up over 3.88% to $93.38 per ounce, and gold last traded 1.72% higher at $4,673.96 per ounce.

On Friday in the U.S., the S&P 500 ended just below the flatline and posted a losing week, while the Nasdaq Composite also inched down 0.06%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.17%.

The three major indexes hit their session lows after Trump said in the White House on Friday that he’d rather have National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett stay in his current role and that he might not be chosen to become the next U.S. Fed chair.

Hassett has been seen as the more market-friendly option to replace current Fed chair than the new frontrunner nominee, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, and is expected to be more willing to keep rates low.
