Iran locks nation into ‘darker’ digital blackout, viewing internet as an ‘existential threat’

Iran’s internet blackout has hardened into a permanent system of digital repression, with the regime treating citizens’ access to the outside world as an “existential threat,” according to digital rights monitors.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported Monday that Iran’s connectivity landscape had shifted dramatically as the country entered its 22nd day of unrest, following several days of almost total nationwide internet shutdown.

“On the twenty-second day, after several days of an almost complete internet shutdown, reports emerged of limited and unstable internet connectivity in some parts of the country,” NetBlocks reported.

“Indications are that we’re seeing a move toward a kind of ‘filternet plus’ censorship scheme in Iran,” NetBlocks CEO Alp Toker told Fox News Digital before pointing to “a rapid decline into a darker kind of digital darkness.”

“The key difference from the pre-protest filternet arrangement is that, while internet platforms were extensively censored before, the regime is selectively whitelisting only a handful of services it deems critical for business needs.

“Even this selective access is sporadic, which means the censorship is likely still in the test phase,” he added. “In practice though, ordinary users remain offline.”

Toker described how the digital darkness “is in fact getting darker because the information controls are getting tighter.”

“Where international links were tolerated as a window to trade, the regime is approaching each of these as potential threats,” he said before adding that the regime “sees its own citizens’ ability to communicate with the rest of the world as an existential threat because the people are disaffected.”

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) at least 2,571 people were killed as of Monday, with additional deaths reported but not yet fully verified amid the communications blackout.

The internet blackout began Jan. 8 amid escalating demonstrations since Dec. 28, as authorities sought to prevent protesters from organizing, sharing videos of crackdowns and communicating with the outside world.

Since then, connectivity has remained inconsistent, with frequent outages and throttling even when partial access is restored.

Iran International reported the blackout was expected to last until at least late March, with IranWire saying government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani told media activists that access to international online services would not be restored before Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, on March 20.

“Having internet access was always a window to the outside and a lifeline for many Iranians,” Toker added. “It allowed for personal expression and culture that is banned by the regime.”

“These online freedoms can be as simple as online gaming, watching foreign movies or women’s ability to participate equally in spaces that would otherwise be barred by the Islamic Republic,” he added.

“With the internet blackout continuing, the curtain has been drawn on that window,” Toker said. “This is angering many Iranians, particularly Gen Z, who stand to lose a part of their identity.”

The blackout has also coincided with cyber incidents targeting Iran’s state infrastructure.

As previously reported by Fox News Digital, anti-regime activists hacked Iran’s national broadcaster, briefly interrupting state television to air protest messages and calls from Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last shah and a prominent opposition figure.

“We aren’t able to see the specific hack here,” Toker explained. “The lack of up-to-date security is an issue for Iran.”

“It is caused directly by the country’s digital isolation,” he said. “Iran’s internet systems are outdated, and security tools aren’t available due to internet restrictions.”

Toker added that embargoes force widespread use of pirated software, which often contains hidden vulnerabilities that can be exploited to breach critical networks.

He said cyber warfare played a major role during the June 2025 clashes between Israel and Iran, prompting the blackout as a defensive measure against digital attacks. Israel, he noted, also restricted parts of its own network at the time.

“In 2026, we haven’t seen the same focus on cyber incidents, but it’s clear there’s an ongoing battle between state actors as well as individual hackers,” Toker said.

Benfica coach José Mourinho has shut down “soap opera” rumours of a potential return to Real Madrid this summer.

Madrid parted company with Xabi Alonso last week after he had less than eight months in charge and appointed Álvaro Arbeloa, coach of Madrid’s reserves, as his replacement.

Asked about speculation in Spain that Madrid are looking to bring him back for the 2026-27 campaign, Mourinho said following Benfica’s 2-0 win at Rio Ave on Saturday: “Don’t count on me for soap operas. There are many good soap operas, but they take too long.

“Then you miss an episode or two and you lose track. Don’t count on me, I don’t watch soap operas.”

Mourinho, 62, guided Madrid to a LaLiga title, and Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup triumphs during his three seasons (2010-13) with the Spanish giants.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager took the reins at Benfica in September and has a contract until June 2027.

Prince Harry struts out of legal arena like he’s already won

Prince Harry stepped out of the High Court on Monday afternoon, flashing a confident grin that suggested he already felt the first round was his.

The opening day of the high-stakes privacy battle with the publishers of the Daily Mail saw hours of detailed submissions, but the Duke of Sussex appeared unfazed.

The proceedings, overseen by Mr Justice Nicklin, will restart at 10.30am on Tuesday, with Harry expected to return to court later this week to give evidence himself.

At the heart of the case are claims brought by seven public figures against Associated Newspapers Limited, the company behind the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday.

Monday’s hearing saw barrister David Sherborne begin laying out what he described as a pattern stretching back more than two decades.

Speaking on behalf of the claimants, he alleged a sustained reliance on private investigators across Mail titles and named several individuals he said were linked to the practice.

Among the examples raised was an investigator allegedly tasked with obtaining information about a burglary at the home of the Queen’s cousin.

Sherborne also referenced Jonathan Rees, a private investigator once notorious for boasting about the reach of his information network.

According to him, Rees had shown particular interest in the murder of Stephen Lawrence due to the intense public attention surrounding the case.

The court then turned to the individual claims, first filed in October 2022.

Baroness Lawrence’s case centers on five articles published between the late 1990s and 2007.

Attention was later shifted to actress Sadie Frost, whose claim focuses on 11 stories and two specific incidents.

Three journalists are primarily named across those articles.

One draft piece, written but never published, concerned an ectopic pregnancy Frost suffered in 2003.

Sherborne told the court the level of detail contained in the material was deeply personal, noting that even members of Frost’s own family had been unaware of the situation.

As proceedings paused for the day, Prince Harry and Liz Hurley were both seen leaving the court with a smile.

Sherborne is set to continue outlining the remaining claims when the hearing resumes, before the publishers present their own opening arguments.

Brooklyn Beckham breaks silence on family feud

Brooklyn Beckham has launched an astonishing attack on his parents and claimed he has been “controlled by a family that value public promotion above all else”.

The 26-year-old eldest son of David and Victoria addressed their long-standing feud in a six page statement posted to Instagram on Monday night.

Brooklyn announced he has no wish to reconcile with his family and is “standing up” for himself “for the first time” in his life.

The former photographer wrote in the post: “For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family. The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into.

“Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always come out.”

Brooklyn, who married model and heiress Nicola Peltz, 31, in April 2022, claimed that: “My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped.”

He alleged that his mother Victoria had “cancelled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress.”

Brooklyn also confirmed previous reports that his mother “hijacked” the first dance at the wedding, writing: “In front of our 500 wedding guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me.

“She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everybody. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.”

He added that the couple “wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness, not anxiety and embarassment.”

It was reported last May that Brooklyn and Nicola “snubbed” his father David’s milestone 50th birthday party, but Brooklyn claimed that in fact the couple had traveled to London for the event but “were rejected for a week as we waited in our hotel room trying to plan quality time with him.”

Brooklyn continued: “He refused all our attempts, unless it was at his big birthday party with a hundred guests and camera at every corner. When he finally agreed to see me, it was under the condition that Nicola wasn’t invited. It was a slap in the face. Later, when my family travelled to LA, they refused to see me at all.”

The Independent has approached David and Victoria Beckham for comment.

Physical decline does not wait for old age

A new study tracked the same people for nearly half a century, finding that measurable drops in fitness and strength begin at around age 35 and continue gradually through midlife.

The study is based on the Swedish “Physical Activity and Fitness” cohort, which began in 1971 with participants born in 1958. Researchers enrolled 427 people, a mix of men and women, and tested the same individuals repeatedly over a 47-year span, according to a press release.

DIABETES PREVENTION LINKED TO SPECIFIC TYPE OF EXERCISE, STUDY SHOWS

Models were used to estimate age- and sex-specific changes in the original cohort during the study period.

The follow-up examinations took place at several points across adulthood, allowing the Karolinska Institutet researchers to observe changes within individuals rather than relying on comparisons between different age groups, the release stated.

Researchers followed the same individuals for nearly 50 years, allowing them to track real changes within people as they aged. (iStock)

At each examination, participants underwent standardized physical testing conducted by trained professionals. Aerobic fitness was measured using tests that assessed peak oxygen uptake, a common indicator of cardiovascular capacity.

Muscle strength and muscular endurance were evaluated through controlled performance tests, including grip strength and repetitive movement tasks. Height, weight and other basic physical measures were also recorded, and participants provided information about their physical activity habits.

By using the same tests over time, the researchers were able to track long-term trends in physical performance.

The results showed that physical performance peaks in early adulthood and begins to decline around the mid-30s.

This decline was observed across multiple measures, including aerobic fitness and muscle strength, and continued steadily into later adulthood, the researchers shared.

While individuals who were physically active tended to retain higher overall fitness levels, activity did not completely prevent age-related decline.

Even so, the data showed that participants who increased their activity levels later in life improved their physical capacity by roughly 5% to 10%, demonstrating that the body remains responsive to exercise beyond peak years.

Study limitations

The study, which was published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, consisted of individuals who were born in the same year and were living in Sweden.

This may limit how the findings apply to other populations with different social, environmental or genetic backgrounds, the researchers acknowledged.

As with any long-term study, some participants dropped out over time, which could affect how well the sample reflects the original population.

Also, physical performance was measured at specific intervals, so short-term fluctuations between testing periods were not captured.

In addition, while physical activity was associated with better outcomes, the observational nature of the study means other factors such as diet, occupation or health conditions may also have influenced results, the researchers stated.

The team plans to continue following the cohort as the participants grow older, with the goal of linking changes in physical capacity to health outcomes later in life.

Northern lights expected in unusual locations due to severe solar storm

A severe geomagnetic storm is expected to bring a rare display of the northern lights, or aurora borealis, to light skies over Iowa late Monday night, January 19, into early Tuesday morning, January 20.

Space Weather Prediction Centre reported that the northern lights could be visible as far south as Alabama, placing Iowa squarely in the potential viewing zone.

What is the best time to watch the Northern Lights?

The most suitable time to witness the aurora will be between 10:00 p.m. Monday and 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, with peak activity forecast around midnight. The major visibility is expected in Iowa, making it the primary location.

How to watch Northern Lights?

Although skies are expected to be clear, the temperature is extremely low, making it hard to watch the celestial event.

Air temperatures in northern Iowa will be in the single digits, with wind chills plummeting as low as 10 to 30 degrees below zero.

For those braving the cold, they can watch northern lights with the naked eye. For clearer views, smartphones can help.

What camera setting works best for northern lights photography?

To capture the best aurora photos, use night mode and long exposure settings.

For professional cameras, use manual mode with a wide aperture (f/1.4- f/2.8), a high ISO (1600-3200) and a shutter speed of 5-20 seconds.

Three tourists in New Orleans were wounded in a shooting that left a 19-year-old dead when the man ducked into a famed Creole restaurant in a bid to escape the gunfire, authorities said Monday.

The shooting unfolded just after 8 p.m. Friday, when the 19-year-old man was chased down a street and fired upon, New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

The man ran into the foyer of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant to escape the gunfire. The restaurant was crowded at the time, and the gunfire struck three bystanders waiting for tables, Kirkpatrick said.

All three victims were women visiting the city, she said. Two were friends from Los Angeles and the third was visiting from Florida.

Rachael Blackmore, the trailblazing jockey who made history as the first woman to win the Grand National in 2021, is betting that Britain’s littlest royals will soon follow in her hoofprints.

The Irish rider, who shocked the racing world with her retirement last year, predicts that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are destined to develop a taste for the track as they grow older.

“I have a feeling when they hit their teenage years, they’re going to want to go,” Blackmore said.

“Cheltenham is one of the best sporting occasions in Britain. I guarantee they’ll be racing in some shape or form.”

Blackmore, now serving as head of Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival, will be joining none other than Zara Tindall, the accomplished rider and non-executive director at the racecourse.

She praised Zara as “great fun, really, really nice and obviously an extremely accomplished rider herself.”

The jockey has long enjoyed royal attention. She recalls Camilla visiting her County Waterford yard to meet her and her star horse, Honeysuckle.

“She’s just so passionate about horses,” Blackmore said. “It was fantastic to see her admiration for Honeysuckle and all her achievements.”

Royal experiences don’t stop there. she also got a front-row seat to Wimbledon in 2023, sitting in the Royal Box behind Prince William and Princess Kate.

“She knew who I was and congratulated me on my success. She’s a beautiful person inside and out,” Blackmore gushed.

Zara Tindall, recently unveiling a dazzling luxury jewellery line with Australian designer John Calleija, congratulated Blackmore after her New Year’s Day victory at Cheltenham in 2024.
