KARACHI:

After several sessions of upward momentum, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) saw a sharp reversal on Wednesday as renewed selling wiped out gains and the benchmark KSE-100 index plunged by nearly 1,600 points, reflecting widespread selling across key sectors.

At close, the benchmark KSE-100 index settled at 187,033.27, with a decrease of 1,588.52 points or 0.84%.

Trading opened on a relatively steady note, with the index briefly edging higher and touching an intra-day peak of 189,523.43. The optimism, however, proved short-lived. Persistent selling dominated most of the session, erasing early advances while pressure intensified towards the close, dragging the index down to an intra-day low of 186,626.85.

Investor sentiment remained fragile, with participants adopting a cautious stance amid a volatile trading environment. Uncertainty over macroeconomic conditions, fiscal measures, and the direction of key policy decisions dominated market behaviour, prompting investors to trim positions and limit exposure, which further weighed on overall sentiment as the session progressed.

KTrade Securities equity trader Ahmed Sheraz commented that PSX witnessed profit-taking during the session.

He said selling pressure emerged primarily driven by institutional activity as investors moved to lock in recent gains ahead of next week’s monetary policy announcement while overall market participation remained healthy, with KSE-100 volumes recorded at 703 million shares.

Heavyweight stocks remained under pressure with Meezan Bank, Engro Holdings, MCB Bank, Habib Bank, Systems Limited, United Bank and Pakistan State Oil closing in the red.

The selling trend reflected broad-based profit-taking rather than stock-specific weakness, Sheraz added.

On a sectoral basis, commercial banks, investment banks and technology stocks underperformed, contributing to the overall negative sentiment. Given the upcoming futures rollover and the monetary policy decision scheduled for Monday, Sheraz expected the sentiment to remain range-bound in the coming sessions, with next week likely to determine the near-term direction.

Overall trading volume increased to 1.32 billion shares compared with Tuesday’s tally of 1.22b while shares of 488 companies were traded. Of these, 118 closed higher, 331 dropped and 39 remained unchanged.

K-Electric led the volume chart with trading in 263.3m shares, gaining Rs0.26 to close at Rs7.01. It was followed by Hascol Petroleum with 100.8m shares, rising Rs0.58 to close at Rs28.05 and Fauji Foods with 75m shares, climbing Rs0.67 to close at Rs23.17.

Inside Oscar winner AR Rahman’s ‘BBC’ interview and fallout that followed

Allah Rakha Rahman, known as A.R. Rahman, one of the finest composers in the music industry has sparked heavy criticism from Hindu ring-wing voices following his recent comments regarding alleged communal bias in Bollywood.

The 59-year-old Kun Faya Kun composer shared his views on ‘lost work’ in the industry during an interview.

‘People who are not creative have the power now to decide things, and this might have been a communal thing also but not in my face,’ Rahman told the BBC Asian Network online in the interview aired on Wednesday.

‘It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers. I said, ‘Oh, that’s great, rest for me. I can chill out with my family,’” he said in the 90-minute interview.

Right-wing commentators and activists questioned Rahman’s patriotism and talent, accusing him of playing the “victim card”.

Vinod Bansal from the far-right organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanded an apology from Rahman for “defaming” the country.“

We are proud of him and whatever he has done for the country. But for someone who has earned his living from the Indian industry, the way he is trying to defame the country is highly objectionable,” he told Al Jazeera.

Amid the controversy, the composer stepped forward to clarify his stance following a stream of media trolling.

In a video posted to his Instagram account, Rahman said: ‘I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music.’

He stressed that he remained grateful to the nation and noted that he had thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support of India’s entertainment industry.

For those unversed, the legendary artist has won some of the world’s most coveted musical awards – including Oscars, Grammys and a Golden Globe.

His song Jai Ho which won him an Oscar, became a celebrated anthem.

The Oscar winner’s  1997 song Maa Tujhe Salam on his album Vande Mataram was seen as unifying the diverse nation of 1.4 billion people.

A.R. Rahman’s blockbusters span Bollywood and Tamil cinema, featuring iconic hits like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Jai Ho, Dil Se Re, Tu Hi Re, and many more.

Wetzel: Hoosiers delivered a national title for the everyman

Wetzel: Hoosiers delivered a national title for the everyman

College football’s transfer portal is about as popular as a flooded basement. It’s been blamed for nearly every problem in the sport. No loyalty. All about money. Chaos! Confusion!

It’s not all unfounded. There is room for improvement, although legislating against adults making bad decisions has never really worked in any segment of society.

Yet sometimes, such as Monday in Hard Rock Stadium, the portal also delivers, perfectly in this case.

The 16-0 Indiana national champions weren’t just a fun, glorious team to watch, and they don’t just change the possibilities for teams across the sport. They also highlighted the benefits of a meritocracy that mirrors the ethos of the American dream.

This is a national title for the everyman.

Consider Fernando Mendoza, who grew up 2 miles from the campus of the University of Miami, the son of two graduates, and dreamed of playing for the Hurricanes.

But the two-star quarterback recruit couldn’t get a scholarship from the former coaching staff.

He committed to Yale, then signed with Cal. He redshirted his first season, then didn’t see the field until midway through his second, when he threw nearly as many interceptions (10) as touchdowns (14).

He developed into a promising prospect even as the Cal program continued to struggle (posting five consecutive losing seasons). He then brushed off Miami’s overtures last winter to transfer into what he believed was the ideal developmental situation, this rocket ship known as Curt Cignetti’s Indiana.

Or think of Mikail Kamara, who grew up in Ashburn, Virginia, and spent his high school years attending football camps looking to catch the eye of anyone who might believe in him. Almost no one did.

A zero-star recruit, he wound up signing with James Madison, which played FCS football at the time. He buried his head in work, became stronger and faster, overcame an injury and helped lead the Dukes into FBS football.

Before his redshirt junior season, he followed his head coach and transferred to once-forlorn IU.

On Monday night, in a national title game no one ever saw coming, the once-ignored Mendoza and the once-unknown Kamara delivered two of the most memorable plays (an outstretched QB sneak touchdown and a blocked punt that was recovered for another score) as Indiana defeated Miami 27-21.

It was Indiana’s first national title, and it’s the first time college football has had a first-time champion since 1996, when Florida broke through.

This was a sport of the gate-keeping bourgeois, where how good you were 40 or 60 or 80 years ago mattered, where established brands and facilities attracted so many top recruits that a handful of schools could overwhelm the rest on sheer depth. Get enough talent (and starve the other schools of it) and the margin for error is considerable.

If an upstart program actually started making waves, the coach would be quickly hired away and order restored. The coaching transfer portal, after all, was long ago established and accepted.

Who’s your daddy mattered, at least until these Hoosier Daddies.

“You get it done with the right people, properly led,” Cignetti said.

The portal has changed everything, and if the people who run college football actually wanted to promote college football rather than complain, lobby Congress and tell the public how awful and unsustainable everything is, then maybe that would be better appreciated.

The sport is now about the players who work the hardest, who develop the most, who seize opportunities to get better until they are better. How many stars you had at 16 no longer counts for much. Making the Elite 11 not long after turning 11, carries little value.

Were you overlooked because you weren’t at the right high school, or in a big city, or everyone missed your potential, your heart, your dedication? Late to bloom doesn’t mean you are doomed. You just have to go prove it.

Who is against that? Yes, players leave the lower programs for the bigger ones (often swapping places with the hyped recruit who didn’t pan out). Nearly every player, though, grew up wanting to be in the biggest games in the biggest conferences, chasing championships.

That’s part of the deal. Bigger checks as well.

Cignetti didn’t get a Power 4 head coaching job until he was 62. He worked his way up from D-II to FCS to arguably the worst program in the Big Ten. It stands to reason that his grind contributed to his understanding of not just how the portal can work but who it can work for best.

“There’s a lot to be said about what the guy is made of,” Cignetti said. “His intangibles and his moldability or coachability, what kind of teammate he’s going to be … you get the right group of guys together that combine as a team.”

This Indiana team was full of grinders and chips on shoulders. They were a relentless group of discards and misfits. It had just 8 players who ever ranked four stars or better in high school. Five years ago, that mix was a one-way ticket to a bowl game in Shreveport.

Not anymore, not with the transfer portal.

Cignetti is an astute evaluator of not just talent, not just pricey additions. He put together a roster of two-stars and Sun Belt transfers, each hungrier than the next. They beat Ohio State to win the Big Ten title. They beat Alabama, Oregon and Miami to win the national one.

The transfer portal has no public relations team or marketing campaign, nor even very many public supporters.

The portal does have a national champion though, a perfectly imperfect Hoosiers team that couldn’t have existed without it, but had the chance to prove its individual and collective merit on the field because of it.

All the supposed blue bloods are looking up at them now.

Katherine Ryan takes aim at Brooklyn Beckham in fierce defense of his parents

Katherine Ryan has come out in defense of Victoria and David Beckham after their eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, launched an attack on them.

Recently, the eldest son of the Beckham family took to his Instagram account and claimed that his mother, Victoria, “hijacked” his first dance with his wife, Nicola Peltz, at their 2022 wedding.

Following the allegation, Katherine criticized Brooklyn, calling him an “ungrateful nepo baby.”

During the latest episode of her Telling Everybody Everything podcast, the comedian said, “I am on David and Victoria’s side. As a parent, and as someone who has been a s***** young person, I think Brooklyn Beckham needs to grow up a little bit.”

The 42-year-old further said, “He is the first son of an absolute dynasty family, they are like a royal family in matching denims to us – and that comes with many privileges. But of course it’s complicated because you live your life in the public eye.”

“Fine, but I feel that he has benefited from this a lot and he doesn’t seem to have the measured emotional intelligence to go, ‘In many ways, this has been s***, but in many ways, this has created me with a beautiful life. My parents are not abusers. My parents performatively or otherwise say nice things about me and give me opportunities,'” she continued.

“I do think a lot of nepo babies struggle with not being able to reach – certainly not eclipse – the success of their parents,” added Katherine. “I’m not seeing any of the gratitude in these posts.”

Commenting on Brooklyn’s claim, the Tinsel Town alum said, “What does that mean? Twerking, grinding? Why was Victoria Beckham poised to dance that first dance? Maybe it was a misunderstanding, because you do a dance with your mother.”

How Timothy Busfield, Melissa Gilbert really feel after release from jail

Timothy Busfield, Melissa Gilbert’s real feelings after jail release

Timothy Busfield and Melissa Gilbert are feeling good after his release on bail.

Bustfield, 68, was released from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County, N.M., on Tuesday, January. 20. He was arrested a week ago after he surrendered.

He was then charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor (child under 13) and one count of child abuse, per prosecutors.

The West Wing actor appeared in a pretrial detention hearing. The judge ruled that Busfield would be released on his own recognizance and with conditions while he awaits trial.

Following the release, his attorney told People that the actor “feels wonderful,” adding, “He can reunite with Melissa,” noting that Gilbert, 61, is “very, very excited.”

The actress was at thehearing to support her husband, whom she believes innocent of the crime, and was seen crying and saying, “Thank you, God” when the judge ruled for bail.

Gilbert’s mom, Barbara Cowan, 89, her son Michael Boxleitner, and Busfield’s brother, Buck were also there.

The actress previously broke the silence about the allegations to note that she’s for her husband. Her representative, Ame Van Iden, issued a statement on her behalf that said, “Melissa stands with and supports her husband.”

Busfield has denied the charges and said he “did not do anything to those little boys, and I’m gonna fight it.”

Cause of death revealed weeks after woman died following Universal Orlando ride: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The identity and cause of death of a 70-year-old woman have been released weeks after she died following a ride on Universal Orlando’s Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster.

The woman became unresponsive while riding the indoor attraction on Nov. 25, 2025, according to a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) report.

She was identified Thursday as Ma de la Luz Mejia Rosas, according to the office of civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who said in a statement that he has been retained by her family.

Rosas was rushed to a nearby hospital after losing consciousness on the ride, and died on Dec. 9 at Orlando Regional Medical Center of a ruptured aneurysm without trauma, according to a report by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

“Mrs. Rosas went to the park to enjoy time with her children and grandchildren, expecting a safe and joyful experience. Instead, her family is now left grieving and searching for answers,” Crump said in a statement. “They deserve a full understanding of what happened before, during, and after this ride.”

Crump added that he will “thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragedy and ensure her family’s voice is heard.”

Revenge of the Mummy is an indoor roller coaster based on the popular “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns” films. It reaches speeds of up to 45 mph.

There have been 21 reported incidents on the ride ranging from nausea and dizziness to a seizure and a vertebra fracture since the attraction opened in 2004, according to data included in the FDACS report.

The FDACS report lists incidents by quarter at amusement parks that employ full-time safety inspectors. Those parks are required to self-report incidents because they are exempt from state inspections.

The report also said that during the October-to-December 2025 period, six health-related incidents were reported at Walt Disney World, while no incidents were reported at other major Florida parks, including SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Legoland.

Rosas’ death comes just months after 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala died after becoming unresponsive on the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe park on Sept. 17. Zavala suffered multiple blunt force injuries and later died at a hospital, authorities said.

Attorneys for Zavala’s family argued that Universal ignored “multiple” warning signs before his death, saying the incident was not “isolated” and that other riders have reported similar injuries on the same attraction.

Crump, who also represented Zavala’s family, said last month that an amicable resolution had been reached between Universal and the family. The terms of the agreement are confidential.
