Sleep apnea sufferers may soon have a new path to a good night’s sleep.

A Massachusetts biotech startup is preparing to file for FDA approval of a once-nightly pill that could become the first medication approved to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Approximately 30 million U.S. adults suffer from the serious sleep disorder, in which breathing stops and starts throughout the evening, according to experts.

SIMPLE NIGHTLY HABIT LINKED TO HEALTHIER BLOOD PRESSURE, STUDY SUGGESTS

What to know about sleep apnea

They are two types of the disorder: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea. With OSA, the most common type, breathing stops due to a physical blockage of the airway, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The standard first-line treatment for OSA is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which uses a mask to deliver pressurized air that keeps the airway open during sleep. (iStock)

Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain cannot send the normal signals to breathe, sometimes due to health disorders.

“The intermittent stopping of breathing leads to brief awakenings in people who suffer from OSA,” sleep expert Paul Muchowski, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Defined Sleep in San Francisco, told Fox News Digital. “These awakenings disrupt the normal architecture of sleep, ultimately leading to a decrease in deep, restorative sleep.”

MISSING SLEEP MAY TAKE A HIDDEN TOLL ON YOUR BRAIN AND LONGEVITY, RESEARCH REVEALS

People with the condition often wake up feeling unrefreshed and fatigued, leading to effects like irritability, lack of concentration, decreased cognition and memory, and headaches, according to the expert.

“It also increases risk for heart trouble, strokes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” he added.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a sleep study, where sensors are placed on the body to monitor the activity of the heart, lungs and brain to assess the quality of sleep, according to Cleveland Clinic.

“Surprisingly, many folks who have sleep apnea are unaware they have it,” Muchowski noted.

Standard treatments for sleep apnea

The standard first-line treatment for OSA is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which uses a mask to deliver pressurized air that keeps the airway open during sleep.

Many people find CPAP machines too cumbersome to use consistently, and as a result may not seek treatment even after being diagnosed with sleep apnea, according to Muchowski.

“Surprisingly, many folks who have sleep apnea are unaware they have it.”

In 2024, the FDA approved the popular weight-loss drug Zepbound for the treatment of moderate-to-severe OSA, but only for adults who are obese even with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

This drug does not target the underlying cause of OSA, but simply lowers weight in people, which can sometimes lead to a decrease in the sleep disorder, Muchowski noted.

If conservative treatments fail, more invasive options — such as surgery to remove enlarged tonsils — may be considered, experts say.

An experimental pill

Apnimed, a pharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that focuses on treating sleep apnea, has developed a medication known as AD109, designed as an alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP machines.

There is currently no FDA-approved oral medication specifically indicated for obstructive sleep apnea, the company noted.

“A pill for sleep apnea has always been the long sought-after holy grail for sleep researchers around the world,” said Muchowski, who was not involved in the drug research.

In those living with mild, moderate and severe OSA, AD109 helps to keep the airway more open during sleep by targeting the underlying dysfunction between the brain and throat muscles, a representative for Apnimed told Fox News Digital.

The once-daily pill combines two drugs: aroxybutynin, which controls muscle signals, and atomoxetine, which increases levels of norepinephrine. (Norepinephrine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that helps regulate alertness, attention, heart rate, blood pressure and the “fight-or-flight” response, according to Cleveland Clinic.)

“Together, they are designed to work synergistically to help stabilize the upper airway during sleep, improving breathing and oxygenation overnight,” the company added.

In phase 3 clinical trials, participants who received the drug had a significant reduction in the average number of hourly breathing interruptions compared with those who had a placebo.

In one phase 3 study, participants achieved a 55.6% mean reduction in nightly sleep apnea events and also significantly improved oxygenation after 26 weeks. A second phase 3 study showed similar outcomes.

The most frequently reported side effects were dry mouth and insomnia, but no serious adverse events related to AD109 were reported, according to the company.

“Additional safety details will be included in future peer-reviewed publications,” they added.

“It could potentially help tens of millions of people worldwide to sleep better and avoid all of the negative consequences of OSA.”

The research supporting AD109 as a potential treatment for OSA looks “very solid,” according to Muchowski.

“If this potential treatment is approved by the FDA to treat OSA, it could potentially help tens of millions of people worldwide to sleep better and avoid all of the negative consequences of OSA,” he added.

Apnimed plans to submit a new drug application to the FDA in the first half of 2026. While timelines can vary, a standard review typically takes around 10 months, which means the pill could be on the market in early 2027.

“Our focus right now is on completing that process rigorously and responsibly,” the company said.

Brooklyn Beckham told to ‘grab Victoria’s hips’ during infamous wedding dance

DJ Fat Tony, who attended Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding to Nicola Peltz, has shed light on former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham’s “inappropriate dancing” at the ceremony.

In an explosive post shared this week, Brooklyn, 26, opened up about his long-rumoured feud with his famous family, alleging that his parents, David and Victoria, “have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship” with actor and heiress Peltz, whom he married in a lavish Palm Beach ceremony in 2022.

The oldest Beckham son claimed that his mother “hijacked my first dance with my wife” at their nuptials, stating that he was “humiliated” when the former Spice Girl “danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone”.

DJ Fat Tony, real name Tony Manorch, has agreed with Brooklyn’s claim that Victoria’s behaviour was “inappropriate”, solely due to “the timing”. He said that Anthony called Victoria to the stage in place of Peltz and called the former Spice Girl “the most beautiful woman in the room”, which “devastated” Brooklyn and sent Peltz out of the room in tears.

Speaking on This Morning on Friday (23 January), he recalled: “What happened was, basically, [singer] Marc Anthony was performing on stage, he then called Brooklyn onto stage.

“Brooklyn went on to the stage, and the next minute everyone’s expecting Nicola to go up and do the first dance, and then Mark asked for the most beautiful woman in the room to come to the stage – and then he says, ‘Victoria, come to the stage.’

“So Victoria is by the stage, she goes onto the stage, and of course, at that point, Brooklyn is literally, like, devastated because he thought he was going to do his first dance with his wife, then Nicola leaves the room crying her eyes out.”

The musician continued: “Brooklyn is stuck there on stage, and they do this dance, and Mark Anthony says, ‘Put your hands on your mother’s hips’. It was a Latin thing, and the whole situation was really awkward for everyone in the room…”

Beckham is the eldest of four children born to the retired football star and singer-turned-fashion designer. His statement, posted this week, accused his parents of placing “countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their facade”.

“I do not want to reconcile with my family,” he wrote. “I’m not being controlled [by my wife], I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”

Without giving specifics, he also claimed that before the wedding, his parents “repeatedly pressured and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights to my name”.

The Beckhams did not have an immediate public response to the posts, and messages to representatives from The Associated Press were not immediately answered.

Planning a car trip to snow-covered mountains? Tips to avoid tyre skidding and drive safely on black ice

Safe driving tips: Black ice is one of the most dangerous winter road hazards during snowfall seasons. It is a thin, transparent layer of ice that blends with the road surface, making it hard for drivers to see. During snowfall and freezing temperatures, black ice can form quickly and lead to a sudden loss of control. Road safety experts advise drivers to stay alert and follow simple precautions to reduce risks.

Black ice usually forms when temperatures go around freezing and moisture freezes on road surfaces. It is commonly found on bridges, flyovers, shaded areas, tunnels, and curves, as these sections cool faster than regular roads. Early mornings and late nights are especially risky, as the ice may not have melted. Here are some tips that could help you drive safely on black ice:

Slow down and drive smoothly: The most important rule you should follow when driving on black ice is to reduce speed. Sudden acceleration, braking, or sharp turns can cause tyres to lose grip. Maintain a steady speed and keep movements smooth. Driving slower gives tyres more time to respond and helps prevent skidding.

Keep distance: On icy roads, braking distances increase significantly. Drivers should keep at least double the normal distance from the vehicle ahead. This extra space allows more time to react if the vehicle in front slows down or loses control.

Avoid sudden braking: If you suspect black ice, avoid suddenly applying the brakes. If your vehicle has ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), apply steady pressure and let the system work. For vehicles without ABS, gently apply the brakes to avoid wheel lock-up. Sudden braking can cause the car to skid.

If your vehicle starts to skid, do not panic. Ease off the accelerator and steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Avoid overcorrecting, as this could make the skid worse.

Use low-beam headlights: Always use low-beam headlights during snowfall or foggy conditions to improve visibility. Winter tyres or all-season tyres with good tread offer better grip on icy roads. Check tyre pressure regularly, as cold temperatures can reduce it.

Avoid cruise control: Do not use cruise control on icy roads. Drivers need full control of speed at all times. Stay alert for shiny or wet-looking patches on the road, which may indicate black ice.

Experts also suggest checking weather and road condition updates before travelling. If conditions are severe, you can change your route or delay your journey.

Poundland issues store closures update after axing 2,200 jobs

Poundland has announced the completion of a sweeping restructure that saw the discount retailer close nearly 150 shops and axe 2,200 jobs, though it concedes there remains “much to do” to stabilise the business.

The troubled chain, which secured High Court approval for its restructuring plan last August, confirmed it concluded the year with 651 sites, a significant reduction from approximately 800 stores prior to the overhaul.

Its workforce also diminished from 14,200 to around 12,000 by the end of last year.

The extensive revamp also involved the closure of two of its four warehouses, located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands.

Additionally, its customer service centre in Walsall, also in the West Midlands, underwent a reorganisation.

In an update issued on Friday, Poundland stated that the large-scale shop closures are now concluded.

The company clarified: “Any future closures will be a consequence of standard business-as-usual lease events expected at a retailer with a large store network.”

Christmas trading figures revealed a 2.9 per cent drop in like-for-like underlying sales for the quarter ending 28 December.

This decline was attributed to the retailer’s strategy of slashing prices to return to its core discount roots, a move that saw comparable store sales by volume lift by 2 per cent.

Underlying earnings in its first quarter rose £8.4 million to £17.3 million, in line with its expectations.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “While there’s been significant progress as we refocus and re-energise the business with lower prices and a sharper offer, we know we still have much to do.

“Our focus on our costs has, without doubt, given us a platform for future growth, but no sustainable turnaround can be based on cost management alone.

“That’s why our focus in 2026 will be on delivering the kind of ranges and price simplicity our customers want right across the store – in clothing, homewares, as well as our core grocery aisles.”

Recovery efforts since have focused on simplifying the business, including by cutting stores but also by overhauling its pricing structure and removing some categories, such as frozen foods and some chilled ranges, as well as ditching its online offering

Poundland was sold for £1 to investment firm Gordon Brothers in June last year.

It avoided entering administration after a restructuring plan was approved in the High Court in August, days before the company was due to run out of money.

Recovery efforts since have focused on simplifying the business, including by cutting stores but also by overhauling its pricing structure and removing some categories, such as frozen foods and some chilled ranges, as well as ditching its online offering.

It is returning to a simple £1, £2 and £3 grocery pricing across all its UK shops – with around 60 per cent of grocery items priced at £1.

The group is relaunching in-house designed Pep&Co clothing to its UK and Ireland stores, with 90 per cent of items priced below £10 to be available from next week.

It is also next week launching a nationwide ad campaign “to highlight the everyday value” of ranges.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A police officer from Altoona, Pennsylvania, is due in court today to testify about the department’s protocols on handling the personal property of an arrested suspect as accused assassin Luigi Mangione hopes to have evidence thrown out of the federal case against him.

When police arrested him five days after the ambush murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, prosecutors said they found anti-insurance industry writings in his backpack along with the suspected murder weapon and other evidence.

The New York City shooting happened in front of a surveillance camera, and police released other surveillance images in a wanted poster amid a nationwide manhunt.

Customers and staff at an Altoona McDonald’s spotted Mangione days later eating breakfast and called police, leading to his arrest.

Mangione’s lawyers have taken issue with the search of his belongings, which they say happened without a warrant.

They raised similar concerns in a New York state court, leading to testimony from a number of Altoona officers, the McDonald’s manager and additional witnesses.

Prosecutors say police did nothing wrong and maintain that the evidence would have been found inevitably since the bag was with Mangione when he was arrested.

Judge Margaret M. Garnett ordered the officer’s presence after oral arguments on the defense motion to suppress evidence from Mangione’s backpack. She said it does not have to be an officer involved in the arrest.

The government was also ordered to provide her with a copy of the affidavit in support of the federal search warrant.

In a separate effort, the defense is vying to have the top federal charges against Mangione thrown out — which would spare him from facing the death penalty if convicted of the remaining charges.

In order for the murder charge to fall under federal jurisdiction, prosecutors need to show an underlying “crime of violence” was committed. They are alleging that was the stalking of Thompson across state lines before his murder.

The father of two lived and worked in Minnesota and traveled to New York for a business conference. He was shot outside the hotel where it was supposed to be held.

Surveillance footage still shows the suspect in the shooting death of the CEO of United Healthcare was shot to death in what looks to be a targeted attack.

Following oral arguments on the issue, Mangione’s lawyers sent the judge a letter citing a Ninth Circuit decision that happened days later in United States v. Gomez. The appellate court found that a California law on assault with a deadly weapon does not meet the “crime of violence” threshold due to legal technicalities.

“It’s like a series of dominos — the only way that the federal government can get to a death penalty charge in their case is if the murder was committed during the course of a violent felony,” said Joshua Ritter, a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney and Fox News contributor. “And the reason that they need that is because they need what’s called a federal hook to get them federal jurisdiction. So the way that they get that hook is through the stalking.”

Leonardo DiCaprio breaks silence on viral Golden Globes moment

Leonardo DiCaprio has opened up about his viral moment at the 2026 Golden Globes.

Earlier this month, the 51-year-old actor was caught on camera making animated expressions and laughing during a conversation with someone who was out of sight at the star-studded ceremony.

A clip of Leonardo was shared on the official Golden Globes TikTok page and quickly attracted widespread attention online.

Addressing the viral clip, the Titanic star told Deadline that he was speaking with “a friend.”

“It was directed to a friend, but at the end of the day, who knows if this other person that I was talking to wants me to even mention their name?” Leonardo told the outlet.

“So, as the lead character says in A Bronx Tale, I’m not a rat,” he added.

Teyana Taylor, who shares the screen with Leonardo in One Battle After Another, previously told Access Hollywood that she and the actor were discussing how her daughters, Junie and Rue, love the film, KPop Demon Hunters.

The 35-year-old actress mentioned that she didn’t know their interaction was being recorded at the time.

Teyana later clarified on The Tonight Show that after the clip went viral, she realized Leonardo was talking to someone else.

“I was like, ‘You can’t be talking to me, were you talking to me?’ Because I already told people you was talking to me. So apparently he had two KPop Demon Hunter conversations that night, so KPop Demon Hunters was just in his mouth all night,” Teyana joked to host Jimmy Fallon.

“And I’m like ‘Who else is you kekeing with like that?’ Because literally that’s how we [talk, with animated gestures],” She said of DiCaprio.

“So I had a little friendly jealousy, I was like ‘Who else are you chewing your invisible gum with?’ He didn’t even remember who he was talking to. He was like, ‘I don’t even know,'” added Teyana.
