Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday called President Donald Trump’s comments about NATO allies’ role in Afghanistan “unacceptable,” pushing back against suggestions they “stayed a little back” from the front lines.

“Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NATO activated Article 5 for the first and only time in its history: an extraordinary act of solidarity toward the United States,” Meloni wrote on X.

“In that massive operation against those who fueled terrorism, Italy responded immediately alongside its allies, deploying thousands of troops and taking full responsibility for Regional Command West, one of the most significant operational areas of the entire international mission,” she said.

Meloni explained that Italy’s nearly two decades of involvement in Afghanistan came at a significant cost, with 53 Italian soldiers killed and more than 700 wounded during combat operations, security missions and training programs for Afghan forces.

TRUMP SAYS US SHOULD HAVE TESTED NATO BY INVOKING ARTICLE 5 OVER BORDER SECURITY

“For this reason, statements that minimize the contribution of NATO countries in Afghanistan are unacceptable, especially if they come from an allied Nation,” she added.

“Italy and the United States are bound by a solid friendship, founded on a shared community of values and historical collaboration, which is even more necessary in the face of the many current challenges. But friendship requires respect, a fundamental condition for continuing to ensure the solidarity at the heart of the Atlantic Alliance.”

Trump has repeatedly questioned NATO allies’ reliability, including whether they would come to the United States’ aid if ever called upon.

He unsettled U.S. allies across Europe, including U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, after downplaying their contributions in Afghanistan during an interview with FOX Business host Maria Bartiromo at the World Economic Forum.

“We’ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them,” Trump said of NATO. “You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this and that. And they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

Trump later appeared to soften his remarks in a Saturday post on Truth Social, praising the sacrifices of British troops in Afghanistan.

“The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors. It’s a bond too strong to ever be broken. The U.K. Military, with tremendous Heart and Soul, is second to none (except for the U.S.A.!). We love you all, and always will!” he wrote.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., also highlighted the broader international toll of the war, citing the sacrifices of 31 allied nations that fought alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

He thanked those countries for answering the call after Sept. 11, noting that 159 troops from Canada, 90 from France, 62 from Germany, 44 from Poland and 43 from Denmark were among those killed in the conflict.

Texas cult in crosshairs of killer mom’s bathtub slayings case as questions hang over family horror

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A new documentary is looking to peel back the curtain on the case of a Texas mother who was convicted of killing her five children, with rumors circulating decades later that she may have carried out the slayings while under the influence of a religious cult.

On June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five children – John, Paul, Noah, Luke and Mary – in the bathtub of her family’s home in the Houston suburb of Clear Lake, according to People. Immediately following the killings, in which the children ranged from six months to seven years, Yates placed their bodies on her bed and called 911 to confess.

When officers arrived at the family’s home, Yates reportedly met them with wet hair and clothing, calmly stating, “I killed my kids.”

A 2026 Investigation Discovery docuseries “The Cult Behind the Killer: The Andrea Yates Story,” looks into not only the killings, but one of the widely circulated theories that Yates may have been radicalized by a religious cult before drowning her children.

Following the horrific deaths, Yates made national headlines as investigators pored over claims of cult indoctrination and postpartum depression.

“Something had to have snapped,” Cheryl Johnson, Yates’ neighbor at the time, told People immediately after the killings. “She was no monster.”

In the years following the murders, details surrounding Yates’ struggles with mental health began to surface. Her husband, Rusty Yates, reportedly wanted a big family and later told authorities she suffered from severe depression after the birth of her fourth child.

“He was adamant that they were going to have six kids,” another neighbor, Sylvia Cole, previously told People. “She was really meek and easygoing, so I’m not sure if it was a joint decision.”

In the months after her fourth child, Luke, was born, Yates reportedly attempted to take her own life by overdosing on medication prescribed to her sick father, causing her to be hospitalized.

Following her release from treatment, a spokesperson for Harris County Children’s Protective Services told People that “there was no concern on the hospital’s part that she was a risk to her children, so it was never assigned to a caseworker.”

Yates was subsequently prescribed antipsychotic medication and antidepressants, but two weeks after she stopped taking the drugs, her mental condition worsened.

During her trial, her attorney, George Parnham, argued the mother of five drowned her children because she believed it “was the right thing to do.”

Both the prosecution and defense also looked to prove Yates was acting under the influential teachings of Michael Woroniecki, a controversial traveling preacher who reportedly preached that “unrighteous mothers” would go on to give birth to “unrighteous children.”

In “The Cult Behind the Killer: The Andrea Yates Story,” Woroniecki’s teachings are often characterized as a “cult,” though no charges were ever filed against the preacher in connection with the Yates children’s deaths.

In a 2022 interview with “Good Morning America,” Woroniecki called the claims “ridiculous” and denied allegations that his teachings had any influence over Yates at the time of her children’s killings.

“It came up that maybe the pastor that was at their church had somehow, through his preachings, put some idea in her head about good and evil,” Nicole DeBorde, a Harris County defense attorney and president of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, told Fox News Digital.

“And that her ultimate decision to do the horrible thing that she did was because she believed that her children’s souls were going to be lost, and so she needed to kill them before they became evil to preserve their innocence so that they could go to Heaven, which is again pretty awful.”

In 2002, Yates was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years behind bars, according to People. However, her conviction was reversed and Yates was retried in 2006, when she was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

“It couldn’t get more emotional,” DeBorde said. “I mean, you have these beautiful children who are deceased. People just like you and me had to hear this case and had to see the absolute devastation and destruction of this family, including these awful pictures of these children. And that’s enough to make most people so upset that they would render an incredibly punitive sentence as quickly as possible, just because it’s so emotional.”

In light of the verdict, Yates’ defense team looked to blame systemic failures for not only the deaths of her five children, but the fate of Yates herself.

“On June 20, 2001, there were six victims at the home of Andrea and Rusty Yates,” Parnham wrote in an essay for the Houston Chronicle in 2013. “Her five children, certainly, but also Andrea herself – all victims of the real culprit, in this case a severe mental illness known as postpartum psychosis.”

One year later, Yates was sent to Kerrville State Hospital, a Texas-based mental facility, where she has since opted to remain to continue treatment, according to People. In 2022, Yates reportedly waived her annual review to consider her release and “grieves for her children” every day, Parnham reportedly said.

“She’s where she wants to be. Where she needs to be,” Parnham said in an interview with ABC News in 2021. “And I mean, hypothetically, where would she go? What would she do?”

Princess Beatrice spotted by chance amidst maintaining low profile past months

Princess Beatrice seemed keen to tip toe under royal radar but on 23 January in Switzerland but it didn’t quite work out that way.

The 37‑year‑old was spotted at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where she sat down for a conversation with H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al‑Issa, the Secretary‑General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars.

Rather than a power suit, Beatrice opted for a a navy Textured Tailoring Midi Fit and Flare Dress from ME + EM, complete with frills and floaty lines, paired unexpectedly with chunky black biker boots that didn’t go unnoticed by fashion followers.

This Switzerland visit comes on the heels of a cosy countryside weekend with her sister, Princess Eugenie, and close friends, where she embraced classic British outdoor style in wellies, khaki trousers and a floppy hat more Sloane Ranger chic than Davos delegate.

Beatrice’s appearance in Davos highlights how she’s carving out her own space on the world stage.

Though not a working royal with formal duties like some of her cousins, she has quietly maintained a varied public profile from attending major gala fundraisers as a patron and fashion favourite to engaging with global initiatives at high‑profile gatherings.

Her fashion evolution hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Once teased for eclectic style choices, she’s since won plaudits from outlets like Tatler who named her among the best‑dressed in recent years.

The captain of an oil tanker intercepted by the French navy has been detained under investigations into whether it was operating under a false flag, the Marseille prosecutor’s office said on Sunday.

The vessel named Grinch was seized in the Mediterranean on Thursday, then diverted to anchor off the French port city, on suspicion of being part of the shadow fleet that lets Russia export oil despite sanctions.

The 58-year-old captain, an Indian national, was detained as part of the preliminary investigations, the prosecutors said in a statement that did not mention Russia.

The vessel left the Russian port of Murmansk in early January, sailing under a Comoros flag, French authorities have said.

Other crew members, also Indian nationals, remain on board the ship while investigators verify the validity of the flag and the vessel’s navigation documents, the statement added.

The EU has imposed 19 packages of sanctions against Russia, but Moscow has adapted to most measures and continues to sell millions of barrels of oil to countries such as India and China, typically at discounted prices.

Much of the oil is carried by what is known as a shadow fleet of vessels operating outside of the Western maritime industry.

In October, France detained another sanctioned tanker, the Boracay, off its west coast and released it after a few days.

Riz Ahmed swoons over Tom Cruise in ‘Digger’

Tom Cruise, who is known for his larger-than-life roles, has a reputation for putting all of himself into the character he is playing.

So, in Digger, he portrays Digger Rockwall and Riz Ahmed, who is also a noted actor and co-star in the comedy drama, is left stunned by witnessing his performance.

In an interview with Collider, he shares, “Honestly, there’s nothing like that experience I’ve ever had before, just because of how motivated, focused, hardworking, and inspiring Tom Cruise is on set. The energy he has and the positivity is crazy. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

“Then Alejandro, the attention to detail, the vision, the ambition of it, as well, every day is just like, ‘Wow, this is kind of nuts.’”

In addition, Ahmed also swoons over Emmanuel Lubezki, who is the Digger’s cinematographer. “I would be kind of motivated break character and go up and be like, ‘What the hell are you doing? What is this that you’ve put up?’”

“He uses grays, and he doesn’t just have one kind of gray. He has, like, 16 or 10 different shades of gray that he puts up to reflect and create different nuances.”

Just the level of craft and attention to detail is crazy. It just makes you want to bring your best to the table. It’s inspiring. It’s intense, though. It’s definitely very intense,” Ahmed notes.

Digger debuts in cinemas on Oct. 2.

‘Wonder Man’ makers creatively shape Simon Williams | The Express Tribune

NEWS DESK:

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man takes a fresh approach to Simon Williams, with creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Young reimagining the longtime comic character for the MCU.

The duo confirmed they were given broad creative freedom to shape his story without being tied to a specific comic run.

Simon Williams, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, debuted in Marvel Comics in 1964’s Avengers #9. Despite his long history, the creators say the series is not directly adapting any specific comic run. Instead, Marvel encouraged them to focus on a character-driven story centered on the entertainment industry.

Andrew Young explained that there was no mandate to follow established comic arcs, allowing the team to explore Simon’s complicated relationship with Hollywood and his superhuman abilities. In the comics, Williams is both a superhero and a successful actor, a dual identity that inspired the show’s more grounded and unconventional tone.

Rather than presenting a traditional superhero narrative, Wonder Man emphasizes Simon as an artist who happens to possess extraordinary powers. That perspective is further reflected in the show’s focus on Simon’s dynamic with Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley, positioning the series as a character study rather than a spectacle-driven MCU entry.

One major question left intentionally unresolved is the origin of Simon’s powers, which appear to trace back to his childhood. This ambiguity has sparked speculation about whether Simon Williams could be an undisclosed mutant within the MCU. When asked directly, both Cretton and Young declined to clarify, suggesting the mystery remains open for future storytelling.

Cretton has emphasized that viewers expecting a conventional superhero series may be surprised, but believes the emotional depth and character exploration will resonate over time. According to the creators, the genre is used as a framework to explore internal conflict rather than constant action.

All eight episodes of Wonder Man premiere January 27 on Disney+.

While working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), director Destin Daniel Cretton and Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz discussed creating a television series centered on the character Trevor Slattery,[31] and discussed this with the actor who plays the character, Ben Kingsley.[4] Around the same time, Marvel Studios producers Stephen Broussard and Brian Gay were beginning early development on a project centered on the character Simon Williams / Wonder Man. Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television, and animation Brad Winderbaum said both ideas were conceived around an “actor’s journey” narrative and working in Hollywood and naturally merged to create a “two-hander” between Simon and Slattery.

In December 2021, Cretton signed a multi-year deal with Marvel Studios and Onyx Collective to develop television projects for Disney+,[32] with a comedy series already in development at that point.[32][33] Cretton would produce the series through his newly created production company, Family Owned. This was in conjunction with Cretton returning to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.[32] In June 2022, the series was revealed to be in early development and titled Wonder Man, with Andrew Guest joining to develop the series and serve as head writer; he was previously a consulting producer on the Marvel Studios series Hawkeye (2021).

France is moving toward banning social media for children under 15, with President Emmanuel Macron urging lawmakers to rush the legislation as countries worldwide tighten controls on kids’ screen time.

In a video released late Saturday by broadcaster BFM-TV, Macron said he has directed his government to use an accelerated legislative process so the bill can clear Parliament and be approved by the Senate by the start of the next school year in September.

“The brains of our children and our teenagers are not for sale,” Macron said. “The emotions of our children and our teenagers are not for sale or to be manipulated. Neither by American platforms, nor by Chinese algorithms.”

Macron’s push comes days after the British government said it is considering similar restrictions as it tightens rules to protect children from harmful online content and excessive screen time.

France’s health watchdog reports that one in two teenagers spends between two and five hours a day on a smartphone. A December report found about 90% of children ages 12 to 17 use smartphones daily to access the internet, with 58% using them for social media.

The agency warned of links between heavy social media use and reduced self-esteem, as well as increased exposure to content tied to risky behaviors, including self-harm, drug use and suicide.

Touching on the freedom to improvise during filming, Momoa shared, “It was fun because it wasn’t just, like, planned out.”

He went on to explain that their comfort with the material gave them space to explore their characters more naturally, something he feels comes with experience in the industry.

5 best sneakers for people who have Achilles Tendonitis | - The Times of India

Achilles tendonitis can be disruptive, impacting everyday activities. This article highlights five sneaker types offering comfort, cushioning, and support to alleviate strain. From budget-friendly Skechers to premium On Running, these shoes focus on shock absorption and smooth transitions, helping you move with less pain.

If you’ve ever had that tight, nagging pain just above your heel, you know how disruptive Achilles tendonitis can be. It’s not just about discomfort during a run – even walking around town can feel like a challenge when your tendon is unhappy. And if you live somewhere with lots of walking – like a busy U.S. city or the crowded streets of Delhi or Mumbai, having shoes that genuinely support your feet becomes a daily need.Sneakers for Achilles tendonitis aren’t just “nice to have.” They’re often about shock absorption, heel-to-toe balance, supportive cushioning, and a bit of thoughtful engineering that takes strain off the tendon with every step you take.

Screenshot 2026-01-25 233016

Below are five types of sneakers that have earned their place in the comfort hall of fame – ones that keep the Achilles happier and help you move more confidently.

Skechers ARCH FIT D’LUX

Let’s start with something practical and friendly on the wallet. These Skechers ARCH FIT sneakers are surprisingly supportive for how affordable they are. They come with contoured arch support and cushioning that can help reduce the pressure your Achilles tendon feels as you walk throughout the day. The ARCH FIT line is known for a snug fit that feels like it’s moulded to your foot. For people dealing with pain from long hours on hard surfaces – whether standing at work or walking malls or pavement – that cushioning matters.

196642024068-1

What’s especially cool about these sneakers is that they feel soft underfoot without losing stability. That’s key if you want to reduce strain with every step. They’re simple, easy to wear every day, and an excellent starter pair if you’re just beginning your journey toward pain-free feet.Ideal for: Everyday walking, casual outings, daily errands.

Puma Magnify Nitro 3 Trainers

If you want something that feels sportier and looks sharper – this Puma pair delivers both comfort and performance. The Magnify NITRO line is designed with responsive cushioning that spreads impact away from your heel, which helps reduce stress on the Achilles tendon during movement. Sneakers with plush foam and a stable platform can make a big difference when you’re on your feet for hours or going for light runs or long walks.

685d4605f6931eaf0250b836_1

While training shoes aren’t a “medical fix,” having a cushioned base and a slightly elevated heel-to-toe drop helps protect the tendon during longer sessions on pavement or treadmill. These also work well for fitness classes or gym sessions where repetitive impact can aggravate symptoms.Ideal for: Active walks, light workouts, fitness routines.

New Balance Fresh Foam 880v12

If basic trainers feel too flat and heavy-duty running shoes feel like overkill, the Fresh Foam 880v12 sits right in that sweet spot. Comfortable, well-cushioned, and easy to live in. The kind of shoe you can put on in the morning and forget about all day. What really stands out is the cushioning. New Balance’s Fresh Foam midsole makes every step feel lighter and softer, without turning the shoe into a marshmallow. And if your Achilles tends to act up after long walks or standing around too much, that gentle landing makes a real difference. Less shock. Less pulling. Fewer “why did I wear these today” moments by evening.

693b56d193b7a86184082ca9-new-balance-men-s-fresh-foam-x-880-v12

The shape of the shoe helps too. The heel-to-toe flow feels natural, so your stride stays smooth instead of stiff. The upper holds your foot nicely but still lets it breathe, which is a blessing in warm weather or crowded city days. And the sole has enough grip and stability that you’re not second-guessing every step on uneven pavements. This is one of those sneakers that quietly fits into your life. Walking around town. Airport days. Light runs. Gym sessions. Long errands that somehow turn into five stops. Your feet stay supported, and you’re not counting the minutes till you can take them off.In India, New Balance is easy enough to find now – online, and in select brand stores – so sizing and availability aren’t a headache.Best for people who want one reliable pair for everyday wear, long walks, light running, and steady comfort without anything feeling stiff or overbuilt.

On Running Cloudtilt Black Ivory WHITE

Stepping things up a level, On Running’s Cloudtilt gives you a blend of comfort and performance engineering that’s genuinely appreciated by people dealing with tendon issues. On Running shoes are built around a concept of smooth transitions from heel to toe, a rocker-like effect, which helps reduce the abrupt stress your Achilles experiences with every step. A smoother gait means your tendon isn’t absorbing all the shock, and that can lower pain over time.

1284332_02_jpg

This pair is especially good if you want a shoe that looks clean, feels comfortable from city streets to sidewalk strolls, and doesn’t make your feet feel tired by day’s end.Ideal for: Urban walks, casual office wear, everyday use with a bit of flair.

ASICS Gel-Contend 7

If you’re looking for a shoe that feels more supportive than your regular walking pair but doesn’t scream “serious runner” or burn a hole in your pocket, the Gel-Contend 7 fits right in.This is one of those sneakers people end up buying on a recommendation and then sticking with for years. Not flashy. Not trendy. Just… really comfortable. The kind of shoe that makes long days easier on your feet, especially if your Achilles tends to complain after too much walking or standing.

5-1011b040-004-5-asics-black-marigold-orange-original-imag25cwshdhqyqt.

ASICS has always done cushioning well, and you feel it here. The gel padding in the heel softens every step, which matters a lot when that back-of-the-ankle area is sensitive. Land, roll forward, move on – no sharp impact, no jolt running straight into your tendon. What we really like about this pair is the balance. The midsole isn’t overly soft, so your foot doesn’t sink in and feel unstable. But it’s not stiff either. Just enough support to keep things aligned without feeling restrictive. And the heel-to-toe shape helps your stride flow naturally, which takes pressure off the Achilles over time. The mesh upper is another quiet win. Light, breathable, and practical for Indian weather. Whether you’re walking to work, running errands, travelling, or spending half the day on your feet, it stays comfortable without making your feet feel trapped. This is the sort of sneaker you forget you’re wearing – in the best way.ASICS is easy to find in India too, both online and in stores, so you can try the fit before committing. That matters, especially when you’re buying shoes for injury support. If you want one dependable, no-nonsense sneaker that works for daily life and still protects your Achilles, the Gel-Contend 7 is a very safe bet.

What to look for

Here’s the real deal: there’s no one perfect sneaker for everyone. But most podiatrists agree on a few things that really help when it comes to Achilles tendonitis: good cushioning, a supportive heel, some rocker or smooth transition in the sole, and a fit that doesn’t rub or pinch your Achilles.Too flat or stiff shoes can make that tendon work harder. That’s why many runners and walkers dealing with Achilles stress look for shoes with a slightly higher heel-to-toe drop, which reduces tension from the tendon. Also, remember your feet change with activity, weather, and even seasons. A sneaker that feels great in summer might feel weak in winter when your feet are swollen or dry. Trying on shoes in person, when possible, can help you find the right shape and fit for your foot.

More than shoes: small habits that matter

Sneakers can help, but they’re just part of the story.Stretching your calves, gentle strengthening exercises, and slowly increasing walking or running distances make a huge difference too. Achilles tendonitis often comes from overuse – and a little care goes a long way. If pain persists, it’s always worth talking to a physio or foot specialist. If your Achilles tendon has been nagging you, the right sneakers can be a game-changer, not just for running or workouts, but for normal day-to-day life. A well-cushioned shoe with support and smooth foot mechanics takes pressure off that tendon and lets you walk, explore, and move without constantly thinking about pain.Whether you’re grabbing a budget-friendly pair moving into supportive everyday shoes, investing in plush cushioning with , or stepping up to premium comfort – there’s a sneaker here that can make big differences in how your foot feels by evening. The best sneaker for you is one that makes walking feel easier, reduces strain, and lets you forget you even have Achilles tendonitis. And honestly, that’s the best kind of relief.
