New tax regime: Is ELSS still worth investing without section 80C benefits?

New tax regime: Is ELSS still worth investing without section 80C benefits?

New Delhi: With the Indian government pushing more taxpayers towards the new tax regime, many investors are reassessing their financial strategies — especially when it comes to tax-saving investments like Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS). Once a popular choice for locking in tax benefits under Section 80C, ELSS now faces questions about its relevance since the new regime does away with such deductions.

ELSS are equity-oriented mutual funds that invest at least 80 percent of their assets in stocks and equity-related instruments. Traditionally, they offered a key advantage: tax deductions of up to Rs 1.5 lakh per year under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. This deduction reduced taxable income and made ELSS a cornerstone of tax planning for many investors.

However, under the new tax regime, deductions under Section 80C — including those for ELSS — are not available. This means investors who opt for the new regime cannot claim tax breaks for their ELSS contributions, stripping away one of the main incentives for investing in these schemes.

This change has prompted some taxpayers to halt fresh ELSS investments or reconsider their strategy altogether. After all, if the primary tax benefit is no longer applicable, what is the point of continuing to invest in ELSS? The answer, financial advisors say, lies in understanding both long-term wealth creation and the behavioural advantages ELSS funds bring to an investment portfolio.

Even without 80C deductions, ELSS may still be relevant for investors focused on long-term goals. The mandatory three-year lock-in period can help reduce emotional decision-making, preventing premature withdrawals during market volatility and encouraging disciplined investing. This structure makes ELSS a useful tool for building wealth over time, particularly for investors who struggle with timing the market.

From a performance perspective, ELSS funds have historically delivered competitive returns, often in line with or slightly outperforming other diversified equity categories. While past performance doesn’t guarantee future results, the potential for market-linked growth remains a compelling reason to hold or continue investing in ELSS even without tax breaks.

That said, investors should evaluate their personal goals, risk tolerance, and tax situation before deciding. Under the new regime, some may prefer other equity funds or investment options that better align with their financial objectives. Consulting a financial planner can help tailor an approach that balances tax efficiency and long-term wealth creation.

What are today’s HELOC and home equity loan interest rates?

What are today's HELOC and home equity loan interest rates?

HELOC and home equity loan interest rates are often lower than those on credit cards and personal loans.

In the elevated interest rate climate of recent years, there have been few affordable borrowing options to choose from. Personal loan interest rates, for example, have been frozen at around 12% for months while credit card interest rates have declined recently, but only from a recent record high of 23%. Double-digit rates for both make borrowing with either especially cost-prohibitive right now, even with the potential for interest rate cuts to be issued later in 2025.

One smart and effective way to borrow, however, is readily available for homeowners right now via their home equity. With the average equity level comfortably sitting over $300,000 currently, borrowing with a home equity loan or home equity line of credit (HELOC) makes sense. And with rates here significantly lower than most alternatives, and with those rates poised to drop alongside a declining federal funds rate in the months ahead, either could be the ideal way to borrow a large sum of money at an affordable cost.

Before getting started, homeowners should first familiarize themselves with today’s average HELOC and home equity loan rates, both of which change often based on market conditions.

Start the process by seeing how much home equity you could borrow here now.

What are today’s HELOC and home equity loan interest rates?

As of January 27, 2026, here’s what the average home equity loan interest rates are, according to Bankrate:

  • 5-year home equity loans: 7.92%
  • 10-year home equity loans: 8.10%
  • 15-year home equity loans: 8.09%

The average HELOC rate is now 7.44%, according to Bankrate. However, all of these rates are nationwide averages, and the offers you may receive will be impacted by location, lender, credit profile, and more. Take the time, then, to shop around to find the lowest rates and best terms.

Start shopping for HELOCs and home equity loans online today.

What to know about borrowing with a HELOC and home equity loan

HELOCs and home equity loans both use your equity as the funding source, but the way they operate differs. Home equity loans come with fixed interest rates and provide the homeowner with a lump sum of money of which repayments will be expected to be made immediately.

HELOCs, on the other hand, come with variable interest rates and provide the homeowner with a revolving line of credit using the home as the funding source. Payments will only need to be made on the amount of credit used, not the full line of credit you’ve been approved for. And, for an initial draw period, interest-only payments will be required before the repayment period kicks in (typically after 10 or 15 years).

In addition to lower interest rates when compared to alternative borrowing products, both HELOCs and home equity loans have some attractive tax benefits. If the owner uses either product for IRS-eligible home repairs and renovations, they may be able to deduct the interest they paid from their taxes for the year or years in which the product was used. Still, with the home functioning as collateral and the possibility of it being foreclosed on if payments aren’t made as agreed to, it’s critical for homeowners to choose the right product for their needs and budget.

The bottom line

HELOC and home equity loan rates are lower than many alternative borrowing products right now, and they’re poised to decline further if the Federal Reserve cuts rates again later this year. Still, not every lender will offer the same rates and terms, and with your home as collateral, it’s critical to shop around to find the right product for your budget and financial goals.

Adam the Woo’s cause of death revealed weeks after YouTuber was found dead at home

YouTube star Adam the Woo’s cause of death has been released five weeks after he was found dead at his Florida home.

Last month, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about an unattended death at a residence. When they entered the house, the vlogger, real name David Adam Williams, was “reported deceased.” He was 51.

Authorities launched an investigation into his death and have since concluded that he died of natural causes.

In a Facebook post made Wednesday, Williams’ parents, Jim and June, relayed the official autopsy report, which stated: “CAUSE OF DEATH: Atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. CONTRIBUTORY: Obesity.”

“The short answer is…natural causes,” Jim explained of Williams’s death. “Our beloved son…your beloved friend…died, in essence, of a heart attack in his sleep from health issues he probably never knew he had.”

He added: “Now, we can all stop guessing. Be grateful the Lord allowed him to die at home and not in a foreign country. Be grateful he was found by friends (as hard as that was) and not some nameless stranger.”

Williams started his YouTube career in 2009. His videos were filmed across all 50 states, where he visited urban locations, including theme parks and abandoned areas, as part of his channel The Daily Woo. He was known for his laidback approach, with many describing his videos as “calm.”

He was considered one of YouTube’s first content creators and had amassed 768,000 subscribers on his The Daily Woo channel and 419,000 on his first channel, adamthewoo. In his final video, uploaded the day before his death, he proudly showed off the Christmas decorations in his hometown of Celebration, Florida.

Following news of his death, fellow YouTuber Chris Yon paid tribute on Instagram, saying: “I can’t believe I’m typing this…..I’m absolutely devastated to hear of the sudden passing of my good friend Adam the Woo.”

Yon revealed that he had visited Adam just four days ago, where they had ridden around Celebration in his golf cart to check out the Christmas decorations. He said Williams had been sharing “his excitement for upcoming plans on his YouTube channel and made plans to see each other in 2026.”

“I truly don’t know what to say,” he continued. “I’m in complete shock. RIP David Adam Williams.”

“Adam had big plans for 2026. We all think we do,” his father wrote Wednesday on Facebook. “Be alert. Be ready. We love you all. Thank you for loving Adam.”

Aptamil infant formula batch recalled in UK over toxin discovery

Parents in the UK are being warned not to feed their babies using a particular batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula made by Danone.

The company is recalling the product because it contains a toxin, called cereulide, which can cause vomiting.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) says the only batch affected is the 800g pack coded EXP 31-10-2026 – no other batches are at risk.

Customers who still have some of this batch at home can return it to the shop where they bought it for a full refund with or without a receipt, says the FSA.

Cereulide is a toxin which is unlikely to be destroyed by cooking, or when making the infant milk, the FSA says.

If it’s consumed it can lead to symptoms like nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps developing quickly.

The affected batch was sold between May and July 2025 and the expiry date, batch and time can be found on the lower back of the pack.

Earlier this month, another food giant, Nestle, issued a global recall of specific batches of its infant formula product over concerns they contained the same toxin, meaning they were unsafe for babies to consume.

At the time, Nestle said the problem was caused by an ingredient provided by one of its suppliers.

Kanye West’s apology title sparks speculation about new album

Kanye West’s apology over his antisemitic remarks have received mixed reactions on social media.

While some people welcomed his apology, others voiced skepticism saying the rapper might be promoting a new album.

The Anti-Defamation League, which tracks antisemitism, issued a statement describing his apology as overdue and noting his prior antisemitic remarks.

“Ye’s apology to the Jewish people is long overdue and doesn’t automatically undo his long history of antisemitism – the antisemitic ‘Heil Hitler’ song he created, the hundreds of tweets, the swastikas and myriad Holocaust references – and all of the feelings of hurt and betrayal it caused,” an ADL spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

“Must be releasing a new album soon,” said a social media user commenting on Ye’s apology.

“Great name for an album,.” wrote another referring to the title of Kanye West’s apology which read, “To Those I’ve Heart.”

Kanye Wests apology title sparks speculation about new album

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, took out a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal on Monday to apologize for antisemitic remarks that drew years of backlash.

“I lost touch with reality,” Ye wrote in the ad, attributing his behavior to an undiagnosed brain injury and an untreated bipolar disorder.

“I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment and meaningful change. It does not excuse what I did, though. I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people,” he added.

Kim Kardashian shares Kanye West’s unexpected music choice during labour

Kanye West set the soundtrack for one of the most memorable moments in his ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s life.

When their daughter North West was born in 2013, the rapper took full control of the music in the delivery room and played Queen’s iconic Bohemian Rhapsody to mark the day of their daughter’s birth.

Kim shared the story during an appearance on her sister Khloe Kardashian’s Khloe In Wonderland podcast.

The reality star revealed that the rapper’s music choice made the moment feel even more special and perfectly reflected North’s personality from the very beginning.

“She [North] knew what she wanted since the moment she was born. Getting born to the song Bohemian Rhapsody.

[Sister] Kourtney and I talk about this all the time. Kanye was DJing, so he put on Bohemian Rhapsody for the moment she came out. And isn’t it so her [North]?

Kourtney and I cry laughing thinking of this moment and how it’s just so like her, you know? That’s such a weird fact. When I listen to it, I just, like get [emotional],” Kim shared.

The moment, however, since become a funny and emotional family memory.

Kim and Kourtney still laugh about it after so many years, remembering how North’s arrival was marked with music, emotion and a touch of Kanye unforgettable style.

New York Knicks players Karl-Anthony Towns and Guerschon Yabusele spoke out about the deadly Border Patrol-involved shooting that took place over the weekend in Minnesota.

Towns and Yabusele both called out the federal government for its actions in Minneapolis. There have been two shooting deaths involving federal officers in January. Alex Pretti was killed on Saturday and Renee Good was killed earlier this month.

“What is happening in the Twin Cities and the Great North Star State is heartbreaking to witness. These events have cost lives and shaken families — and we must call for accountability, transparency, and protections for all people,” Towns wrote on X on Sunday. “This moment demands that we reflect honestly on what our values truly are. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the families of Renée Good and Alex Pretti.

“I stand with the people of Minnesota.”

Towns played for the Minnesota Timberwolves before he was traded to the Knicks.

“I can’t stop thinking about the tragic events unfolding in Minnesota, and even though I’m French, I can’t remain silent,” Yabusele added. “What’s happening is beyond comprehension. We’re talking about murders here, these are serious matters. The situation must change, the government must stop operating in this way. I stand with Minnesota.”

Towns and Yabusele’s statements came as the National Basketball Players Association also condemned the Border Patrol’s actions.

“Following the news of yet another fatal shooting in Minneapolis, a city that has been on the forefront of the fight against injustices, NBA players can no longer remain silent,” the union said. “Now more than ever, we must defend the right to freedom of speech and stand in solidarity with the people in Minnesota protesting and risking their lives to demand justice.

Ye also voiced regrets for past expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler and the use of swastika imagery.

The rapper referred in the full-page ad to his struggles with his mood disorder over the years.

“Bipolar disorder comes with its own defense system. Denial. When you’re manic, you don’t think you’re sick. You think everyone else is overreacting. You feel like you’re seeing the world more clearly than ever, when in reality you’re losing your grip entirely,” he wrote.

Ye wrote that 25 years ago he was in a car accident that caused significant brain damage that he said wasn’t properly diagnosed until 2023. He added that the medical oversight caused mental health problems that led to his bipolar type-1 diagnosis.

The songwriter said that being in “a four-month-long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behavior” in early 2025 destroyed his life.

Ye added that he “hit rock bottom a few months ago” and had thoughts of not wanting “to be here anymore.”

The “Gold Digger” rapper also addressed the Black community with both appreciation and more apologies. He said it was “unquestionably, the foundation of who I am. I am so sorry to have let you down. I love us.”

The “Stronger” rapper previously said he was on the autism spectrum rather than having a bipolar disorder. However, looking through Reddit posts of other “manic” people helped him feel “not alone” and understand that he has a chronic mood disorder.

Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie is expected to take the responsibilities as head coach of Hyderabad franchise, the newest addition to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), for the upcoming 11th edition, set to begin on March 26 this year.

The news gained widespread attention on social media and was later confirmed by sources, affirming that the former Pakistan red-ball coach will assume the coaching responsibilities, Geo Super reported on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old was previously part of Pakistan’s coaching setup, appointed in April 2024 as the head coach of the Test squad alongside Gary Kirsten, who led the white-ball team.

However, ahead of Pakistan’s two-match Test series in South Africa in December 2024, Gillespie resigned amid reports of a strained relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and challenges in aligning with the team’s management structure.

The historic 11th edition of the PSL will see the tournament expand to eight teams, with Hyderabad and Sialkot joining as the new franchises.

Hyderabad, owned by Fawad Sarwar, secured the franchise by winning the auction with a bid of Rs1.75 billion ($6,247,500).

For the unversed, the PCB also confirmed the dates for the PSL 11 Player Auction, which will be held on February 11 during the auction workshop.

The session was chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and PSL CEO Salman Naseer and attended by all eight franchise representatives, PSL officials, members of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, PCB officials, and other capped players.

During the auction, various topics were discussed, including base prices, team budgets, squad size limits, player retention , and direct signings.
