Texas killer asks victims' families for forgiveness before becoming first execution of 2026

A Texas man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend died by lethal injection Wednesday evening, marking the first U.S. execution of the year.

Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. local time after receiving the injection at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Huntsville Unit. He was found guilty in the April 1998 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30, at the woman’s Houston-area apartment.

Before the lethal dose was administered, Thompson asked the families of his victims for forgiveness, adding that he hoped “you can begin to heal and move past this.”

“There are no winners in this situation,” he said after a spiritual adviser prayed over him, adding that his execution “creates more victims and traumatizes more people 28 years later.”

“I’m sorry for what I did. I’m sorry for what happened, and I want to tell all of y’all, I love you and that … keep Jesus in your life, keep Jesus first,” he said in his final words.

Thompson gasped loudly as the injection began taking effect, according to The Associated Press, before taking about a dozen breaths that turned into snoring sounds. He then stopped moving and was pronounced dead about 22 minutes later.

After witnessing the execution, Dennis Cain, whose son was killed by Thompson, said, “He’s in hell.”

Harris County District Attorney Sean Tear, whose office prosecuted the case, said, “This chapter is closed.”

“It was justice a long time coming,” he added.

On the night of the murders, Thompson visited Hayslip’s apartment at 3 a.m. and got into an argument with Cain, according to court records. Thompson was told to leave the complex after police were called, but returned three hours later and shot the couple.

Cain died at the scene, while Hayslip died one week later.

Thompson’s original death sentence was later overturned, but a jury again sentenced him to die by lethal injection following a new punishment trial in November 2005.

Not long after being resentenced, Thompson escaped from the Harris County Jail in Houston and spent three days on the run before being caught.

He was arrested in Louisiana while trying to set up overseas wire transfers in an apparent attempt to flee to Canada.

About an hour before the scheduled execution, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a brief order rejecting a final appeal from Thompson. Earlier this week, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Thompson’s request to commute his death sentence to a lesser penalty.

Sri Lanka boosts T20 World Cup security with eye on India-Pakistan games

Sri Lanka will deploy elite armed units to protect teams at next month’s T20 World Cup, part of enhanced security measures with a special emphasis on matches between perennial rivals India and Pakistan, officials have told AFP.

The island is co-hosting the biennial cricket tournament with India and will hold 20 games between February 7 and March 8.

The Indian and Pakistani teams will play each other at least once, in their Group A clash in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on February 15.

Cricket matches have long been a stage for expressing political tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours, which fought a four-day border conflict last year.

Sri Lanka has given the “highest priority” to ensuring the tournament runs smoothly and is “paying special attention to the India-Pakistan matches”, sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage told AFP late on Wednesday.

Elite commando units, usually assigned to guard visiting heads of state, will be deployed to protect all participating teams, police and security officials said.

“From the time they step out of the airport till they return to their aircraft, they will be protected by armed guards,” an official said, asking not to be named.

Pakistan refused to play their fixtures in India due to political hostilities, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift their matches to neutral Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh also tried to have their matches moved out of India due to security fears, but the ICC rejected the request. Following this, the cricket-governing body drafted Scotland as Bangladesh’s replacement.

Pakistan has indicated that it may yet boycott the event in solidarity with Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka maintained a studious silence throughout the India-Bangladesh row.

Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake told AFP Colombo wanted to avoid being drawn into regional disputes.

“In these disputes among India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, we are remaining neutral, all of these are friendly nations,” he said.

But he added that Sri Lanka would be willing to host future tournaments for any of the countries if asked.

Sri Lanka has also used the T20 World Cup as an opportunity to upgrade its international venues.

It has commissioned new floodlights at the Singhalese Sports Club, one of two stadiums in Colombo.

The Pallekele Stadium in Kandy was unaffected by a deadly cyclone that damaged buildings in the region in November, and will host a T20 international between Sri Lanka and England from Friday.

Stephen King reveals one storyline he finds scary

Stephen King has weighed in on the story which is too scary for him to revisit.

As per the latest report of PEOPLE Magazine, the author answered fan questions in a 2013 Reddit Ask Me Anything interview.

At that time, King, now 78, said that there is one he does not plan on revisiting the IT sequel.

“I don’t think I could bear to deal with Pennywise again, he answered.

“Too scary, even for me,” he concluded.

For those unversed, King’s 1986 horror novel told the story of seven children terrorized by an evil entity called It, which exploits its victims using their own fears.

Meanwhile, fans have also been waiting for the latest seasons of the series, IT: Welcome to Derry, which is based on Stephen King’s story.

The viewers can now expect the next seasons to show more of Derry’s horrors and the children’s fight against Pennywise.

Andy Muschietti, the director of the series, told CinePOP that the show is created from the beginning to give a look into a longer story, giving fans more time to explore the scary world of Derry.

“For now, we’re going to finish this story, or our intention is to finish this story, in three seasons of IT: Welcome to Derry,” Muschietti shared of the series’ season 1, while speaking with producer Barbara Muschietti before the season finale.

Voyager 1 keeps moving farther from Earth than any human-made object. Launched in 1977, it flew by Jupiter and Saturn, sending back images and information that changed our understanding of the outer planets. It left the asteroid belt early and overtook its twin, Voyager 2, on its way out. The probe crossed into interstellar space in 2012, entering a region with material like long-dead suns. Voyager 2 followed in 2018. Both spacecraft are still sending data through the Deep Space Network, though signals now take nearly a full day to reach Earth. Their journey has lasted over 40 years and continues, beyond Pluto, beyond the planets we know.

Voyager 1 approaches one light-year milestone

Signals from Voyager 1 now take hours to reach Earth. Currently, one-way communication takes 23 hours and 32 minutes, meaning messages from Earth arrive almost a full day later. By late 2026, estimates suggest it will be 16.1 billion miles from Earth, roughly 25.9 billion kilometres. At that point, a radio signal will take 24 hours to get there. It is a quiet milestone, more a measure of distance than a dramatic event. The spacecraft itself will just keep moving outward, drifting into emptiness, carrying instruments still able to record tiny particles and magnetic fields far from the sun.Voyager 2 is exploring parts of space no one has visited Voyager 2 took a slightly different path and reached interstellar space years later. It visited Uranus and Neptune, making it the only spacecraft to study those planets directly. Signals from Voyager 2 also take long periods to travel to Earth but remain a constant trickle of information about a region beyond the planets. Both Voyagers are essentially explorers without return. Each day, they leave more of the familiar behind, moving past regions shaped by the sun into the slow, diffuse interstellar medium.Missions continue far beyond the original objectives The Voyagers were initially designed to study the giant planets. Discoveries like the volcanoes on Io and Saturn’s rings were unexpected. Their missions were extended, and they now form the Voyager Interstellar Mission. They measure particles, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields at distances impossible to recreate. Scientists continue to analyse the signals, though the data arrive slowly, over hours. The pace of exploration is dictated by distance and the finite speed of light.Distance highlights human perspective on space Voyager 1’s milestone of a 24-hour signal travel time is a reminder of the scale of space. The spacecraft moves through regions shaped by phenomena millions of years old. Its instruments still function, quietly sensing its surroundings. For Earth observers, the lag in communication shows the limits of connection. The spacecraft’s motion is steady, indifferent, and ongoing, a quiet witness to a cosmos that humans can only touch indirectly.Voyagers are moving beyond familiar space No spacecraft has gone this far before. They carry instruments, memories of our early planetary exploration, and now measurements of the edge of our solar bubble. Signals will continue to take longer, and distances will keep growing. The Voyagers leave a trail of knowledge, and even as they fade from immediate reach, the information they send forms a bridge to places humans cannot visit.

Rosé gives rare insights into meeting Taylor Swift early in solo career

Rosé shed light on meeting Taylor Swift at a time when she was about to embark on her solo career, apart from BLACKPINK, and how that helped her find her bearings.

The 28-year-old South Korean-New Zealand singer got candid about feeling overwhelmed in regards to navigating her solo career, in a new interview on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.

The Pink Venom hitmaker, who has previously acknowledged the Eras Tour performer for her help, gave Cooper insights into her first meeting with Swift.

“That was when I was trying to look for a label and everything. But before that, I was learning about how to protect myself — what does everything mean,” the BLACKPINK star shared on Wednesday, January 28.

However, things quickly changed when the How You Like That songstress met the Anti-Hero hitmaker, who assured her that she could ask her any questions about whatever she was struggling with.

“We were chatting, and I explained why I was out in the U.S. Then I was like, ‘Oh, I was kinda struggling with this.’ She was like, ‘Ask me anything,’ and she pulled me aside,” Rosé told the host.

That “elder sister” attitude of the Grammy winner helped the APT songstress figure out the logistics of her solo career as she shared her valuable insights after being in the pop music industry for over two decades.

Rosé found a label and released her debut album, rosie, in 2024 which earned global recognition and earned her accolades and nominations.

This is not the first time the Ice Cream singer has sang Swift’s praises. In a 2024 interview with i-D magazine, she called the Love Story singer “the coolest” and “a girl’s girl” for helping her out as a new soloist.

What is Economic Survey and what is its significance?

The survey, also regarded as the official report card of the union government, gives a roadmap for the country’s economy and spells the way forward. The Economic Survey provides a summary of the annual economic development across the country during the financial year.

The annual survey analyses the trends in infrastructure, agricultural and industrial production, employment, prices, exports, imports, money supply, foreign exchange reserves and other factors having an impact on the Indian economy and the Budget.

The survey also puts out economic growth forecasts, provides justification and detailed reasons why it believes the economy will expand faster or decelerate. Sometimes, it also argues for some specific reform measures.

History of Economic Survey

The first economic survey reportedly came into existence in 1950-51, when it used to be a part of the budget documents. In the 1960s, it was separated from the Budget documents and presented day prior to the Union Budget. The most important feature which many will look out for is its central theme. Last year`s central theme was `Agile Approach`, which put emphasis on India`s economic response to the Covid-19 Pandemic shock. The preface of the Economic Survey 2022 stated that the “Agile approach” was based on feedback loops, real-time monitoring of actual outcomes, flexible responses, safety-net buffers and so on.Along with the sectoral chapters, the Survey document also adds new need-based chapters that need focus.

St. John’s honors Rick Pitino’s 900 wins with video tribute

NEW YORK — Celebrated at home for reaching 900 wins, Rick Pitino couldn’t help but think back about where it all began.

Pitino was honored Wednesday night by St. John’s after achieving the rare milestone last weekend, and the Hall of Fame coach racked up No. 901 when the 25th-ranked Red Storm routed Butler 92-70 at Madison Square Garden.

Moments before tipoff, a tribute to Pitino featuring a montage of his highlights played on the large video screens that hang from the MSG roof. St. John’s vice president and athletic director Ed Kull then presented the coach with a framed jersey at center court.

“It’s very nice,” Pitino said at his postgame news conference. “Been a long journey. My wife’s shaking her head back there. We’ve moved a lot. We started our career — I started in Hawaii, and (later) was Jim Boeheim’s first assistant coach. We lived in Syracuse; we left our Volkswagen in the parking lot in October and found it in April. And that’s a true story. That’s how much snow we had that year.”

The 73-year-old Pitino, raised in New York, became the fourth Division I men’s basketball coach to earn 900 wins on the court when the Johnnies rallied Saturday from a 16-point deficit in the second half for an 88-83 victory at Xavier.

The others are Mike Krzyzewski (1,202), Boeheim (1,116) and Roy Williams (903).

Pitino’s milestone win came against his son, Richard, the first-year coach of the Musketeers, making it a special day for the entire family.

“I enjoyed the other night much more — except the bucket of ice being poured on me, which put me out of commission for 24 hours,” Rick Pitino said Wednesday. “But, you know, I love celebrating with the players like that. That’s really enjoyable to me.”

He is 901-316 overall in 38 seasons as a college head coach, beginning with six games in an interim role at Hawaii in 1976. However, the NCAA credits Pitino with only 778 wins after stripping him of 123 because of infractions while he was at Louisville.

He also made stops at Boston University, Providence, Kentucky and Iona, sandwiched around NBA jobs with the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, plus a stint with Greek team Panathinaikos.

“From there to today it’s been a long journey, and getting 900 is a nice thing, certainly. But getting 1,000 would be a lot better,” Pitino said. “And that means I’ve got to be blessed with good health, good players, and just keep recruiting. The better you recruit, the better coach I am.”

St. John’s, ranked No. 5 in the preseason poll, returned to the AP Top 25 on Monday for the first time since mid-December following wins over Seton Hall and Xavier last week. In both games, the Red Storm trailed by at least 15 in the second half. But against Butler, they led wire-to-wire.
