Second elderly South Carolina woman dead from hypothermia in winter storm

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) has confirmed a second death from last weekend’s winter storm as the state braces for more extreme weather in the coming days.

On Jan. 25, an 83-year-old woman died of hypothermia while outside in Lexington County, the department confirmed Wednesday. It said that the first reported storm-related death was a 96-year-old woman in Greenwood County who died of hypothermia on Monday.

The SCDPH said the deaths of both the 83-year-old and the 96-year-old were confirmed by the county coroner. The women have not been identified at this time.

Ahead of last weekend’s winter storm, President Donald Trump approved South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s federal emergency disaster declaration request, providing federal aid to supplement state and local efforts. McMacter’s office said in a statement that South Carolina’s 46 counties would have access to federal personnel and equipment if they needed it.

“I have approved Emergency Declarations for the historic winter storms headed to the great state of South Carolina and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 24. “With the help of FEMA and our state partners, we will keep everyone safe, and make sure both States have the support they need. We will continue to monitor, and stay in touch with all States in the path of this storm. Stay safe, and stay warm!”

Later on Jan. 24, Trump issued another statement saying he had approved emergency declaration requests for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and West Virginia.

When a winter storm hit a large portion of the country, spanning from New Mexico to New England, it dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain, and left much of the country in subzero temperatures. Trump approved several emergency declaration requests for at least a dozen states by Saturday, according to The Associated Press.

One week after the storm, several states are once again bracing to take another hit of winter weather. Fox Weather is reporting that states from the Carolinas through the Northeast are expecting yet another storm, which, like last weekend, could cause travel delays. While the Carolinas are on track to get hit, Massachusetts and Cape Cod are set to bear the brunt of the storm, with snow expected to total nearly half a foot and winds expected to hit 70 mph on Sunday, according to Fox Weather.

Ranking this weekend’s fights: From Lopez-Shakur to Zayas-Baraou

Ranking this weekend's fights: From Lopez-Shakur to Zayas-Baraou

Teofimo Lopez Jr.‘s must-see clash with Shakur Stevenson is not the only fight this Saturday that you should be aware of. There are many excellent matchups taking place on five boxing cards around the globe.

Lopez’s junior welterweight title defense against Stevenson is the weekend’s best fight, a clash that sees two of the world’s top pound-for-pound boxers settle a festering rivalry. There are also two junior middleweight title fights and the welcome return to the ring of Dina Thorslund, one of the best in women’s boxing, who endured a difficult 2025 in which she suffered a miscarriage.

ESPN picks out eight of the best contests happening on fight cards from Newcastle, England, to New York.

All odds by DraftKings Sportsbook.

1. Teofimo Lopez Jr. (+250) vs. Shakur Stevenson (-330) | New York

Lopez has produced some of his best performances when he has stepped up against top-caliber opponents, such as Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 and Josh Taylor in 2023. He will need to find that inspiration again when he faces Stevenson. But Lopez has also had off nights as he did in a split decision loss to George Kambosos Jr. in 2021 and decision wins against Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett in 2024.

Which Lopez turns up on Saturday to defend his WBO junior welterweight title will determine the course of the fight. He has a size advantage (Stevenson is stepping up from lightweight) and has adapted to opponents’ style mid-fight to get wins.

Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) is a skilled, defensive-minded southpaw. He can secure a decision win if he produces a disciplined performance that avoids getting dragged into toe-to-toe exchanges. Lopez likely would come out on top if the fight became a brawl at Madison Square Garden.

Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) has called Stevenson “The Roadrunner,” but if Stevenson finds his range with his reliable jab early on, his footwork and control of distance could leave the champion frustrated. Lopez has struggled with counterpunchers, getting knocked down in Round 2 against Sandor Martin in an eventual decision win in 2021.

Stevenson shone in his lightweight title defense against William Zepeda last July, but he will have to produce his best performance yet to beat Lopez and become a four-division world champion.

Few fights this year will be as big as this.

2. Keyshawn Davis (-600) vs. Jamaine Ortiz (+400) | New York

Davis has shown a ruthless streak in recent fights, destroying Denys Berinchyk in four rounds almost a year ago to win the WBO lightweight title. But can he do the same at 140 pounds?

Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) is stepping up to junior welterweight to face Ortiz after missing weight in June, which caused a planned lightweight title defense against Edwin De Los Santos to be canceled. Following that damaging disappointment, Davis needs to make a statement, with the possibility of lucrative fights in his new division.

Ortiz (20-2-1, 10 KOs) has competed with elite opponents such as Lomachenko in 2022 and Lopez in 2024, both decision losses, and he has the potential to compete with Davis’ speed. Ortiz won his two fights in 2025, and his versatility could see him pull off an upset. Like the Lopez-Stevenson main event, it is hard to pick a winner with any confidence.

3. Bakhram Murtazaliev (-350) vs. Josh Kelly (+260) | Newcastle, England

Kelly will feed off the fervent support of his home crowd in Newcastle, England, when he faces Murtazaliev for his IBF junior middleweight title, but he must keep his emotions in check against the Russian power puncher. Kelly is capable of boxing cleverly, which is what he will have to do to avoid meeting the same fate as Tim Tszyu and Jack Culcay, who were both knocked out by Murtazaliev in 2024.

We’ve not seen much of either recently. Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) did not fight last year, while Kelly spent only two minutes in the ring in a Round 1 KO of Flavius Biea in June.

Kelly (17-1-1, 9 KOs) was stopped the last time he faced someone as dangerous as Murtazaliev, suffering a sixth-round TKO loss to David Avanesyan down at welterweight in 2021. Kelly has improved since then but has to be in supreme condition to jab his way to a decision win. Many will tune into this one expecting to see a Murtazaliev KO, but don’t be surprised if Kelly produces an unexpected twist.

4. Carlos Adames (-425) vs. Austin Williams (+300) | New York

After earning a split draw with knockout specialist Hamzah Sheeraz in February, Adames needs to produce a more convincing display in a second defense of his WBC middleweight world title. Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs) took a while to get going against Sheeraz, but in the second half of the fight he was bolder and busier. However, his strong finish was not enough to get the win, as the judges scored it 115-114 to Sheeraz, 118-110 to Adames and 114-114.

Sheeraz stopped Williams (19-1, 13 KOs) in Round 11 in June 2024, but since then Williams has recorded three wins. If the southpaw can have some success with his counterattacks against Adames, he can make this a close fight.

5. Xander Zayas (-400) vs. Abass Baraou (+295) | San Juan, Puerto Rico

While Zayas knows former sparring partner Baraou well, this is still a step up in competition from his last fight. Zayas, the WBO junior middleweight champion takes on Baraou, the WBA champion in a unification bout in the main event.

Zayas dominated Jorge Garcia in July to win a unanimous decision and claim his first world title at just 22 years old. Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) showed great footwork and counterpunches to earn scores of 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109.

Zayas’s jab was crucial to establishing authority, and he showed a maturity beyond his years as he opted to box his way to a comfortable victory. It’s a strategy that could serve him well against Baraou (17-1, 9 KOs), who likes to march forward.

6. Bruce Carrington (-900) vs. Carlos Castro (+550) | New York

Brooklyn’s “Shu Shu” Carrington will attempt to justify the hype around his rise when he tries to win his first world title in front of his home crowd at Madison Square Garden against the experienced Castro.

Carrington (16-0, 9 KOs) is a red-hot favorite to win the vacant WBC featherweight belt, but it is still worth tuning in to see a fighter who looks destined to break into the pound-for-pound top 10 in the next few years.

Castro (30-3, 14 KOs) lost a split decision to Stephen Fulton in September 2024 and has not boxed since. That inactivity will not do Castro any favors, and considering he has been beaten every time he has stepped up to face a quality opponent — against Fulton, Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa — this fight could be a tough matchup for the former title contender.

7. Dina Thorslund vs. Almudena Alvarez | Kolding, Denmark

Thorslund (23-0, 9 KOs) did not make a single appearance in 2025 after she withdrew from a title unification bout because of pregnancy, and relinquished her WBC and WBO bantamweight belts. The former two-division world champion faces substitute opponent Alvarez (7-3, 2 KOs) for the WBC interim featherweight title in what is expected to be a comfortable win for Thorslund in her first fight since October 2024.

AstraZeneca pledges $15 billion China investment during Starmer trip

British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has pledged a $15 billion investment in China by 2030, aiming to expand its medicines manufacturing and research and development capabilities.

The announcement, made on Thursday during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing, marks the largest deal of his trip as Britain seeks to strengthen ties with China amid strained relations with Washington.

Prime Minister Starmer welcomed the investment, stating: “AstraZeneca’s expansion and leadership in China will help the British manufacturer continue to grow – supporting thousands of UK jobs.”

This significant commitment to China, the company’s second-biggest market, comes despite recent scandals, including the arrest of its China president in 2024. It also follows a substantial $50 billion manufacturing deal in the United States last year, highlighting AstraZeneca’s global strategic focus.

Biggest investment in China yet

AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot said it was the company’s largest investment in China, where it has operated for more than 30 years and is the biggest foreign drugmaker. China accounts for about 12% of its revenue. AstraZeneca has invested billions of dollars in the country during Soriot’s tenure as CEO since 2012, including $2.5 billion in a Beijing research and development hub in March last year, its second after a Shanghai site opened in 2024.

The drugmaker said the new deal would bolster its capabilities in new therapeutic approaches like cell therapy.

The centres work with more than 500 hospitals across China and have helped run global clinical trials.

The drugmaker said the new deal would bolster its capabilities in new therapeutic approaches like cell therapy and radioconjugates, where it said China was a recognised leader.

Building on its 2024 acquisition of Gracell Biotechnologies, AstraZeneca said it would become the first global biopharmaceutical company with end-to-end cell therapy capabilities in China.

The investment would also help develop treatments for cancer, blood disorders and autoimmune diseases, the company said, and expand manufacturing sites in Wuxi, Taizhou, Qingdao and Beijing, which it said supply medicines in China and to 70 markets worldwide.

It will lift its China workforce to more than 20,000.

Astrazeneca partners China’s booming biotech industry

China’s growing role as a source of new drug assets has become a focus for the industry, executives said at the JPMorgan Healthcare conference earlier this month.

AstraZeneca has signed more than a dozen deals with Chinese biotech firms developing early-stage experimental drug candidates, including partnerships with AbelZeta, CSPC, Harbour BioMed, Jacobio and Syneron Bio.

AstraZeneca’s Chief Financial Officer Aradhana Sarin said in November that growth in China has been “strong throughout the year”.

Some rival drugmakers have sold off Chinese assets following supply chain disruptions, economic slowdown, and strong competition in the country’s centralised drug procurement programme.

Luke Thompson breaks silence on his character’s biggest challenge in ‘Bridgerton’ season 4

Luke Thompson has finally reflected on his character’s ability to “love bomb” in Bridgerton season 4.

For those unaware, the 37-year-old English actor is playing the role of Benedict Bridgerton, the second Bridgerton son, in an alternative history regency romance television series created by Chris Van Dusen.

Bridgerton season 4, which is set to premiere on January 29, on Netflix, centers around Benedict as Cinderella’s tale unravels following his meeting with housemaid Sophie Baek (played by Yerin Ha) with his identity hidden at his mother’s masquerade ball.

While speaking with PEOPLE magazine about his character at the season 4 premiere in Paris, Thompson revealed that the biggest challenge this season holds for Benedict is his disinclination to “commitment.”

He articulated, “He is someone who is very comfortable giving everyone a little piece of himself — but no more and no further.”

The Transatlantic star even stated that Benedict has to learn how to “love someone specifically,” as he is responsible for the “general love bomb” that muddles his feelings for Sophie.

“How can you really give someone [everything] and show everyone, you know, the sort of more complicated depths of yourself?” he asked.

“I think that’s his journey, it’s sort of [him figuring out] how to go deeper,” Thompson hinted at the arc that viewers can expect.

Before concluding, it is pertinent to mention that Bridgerton season 4, which consists of two parts, will drop its second part on February 26, 2026.

Zayn Malik gets reality check by fans over apparent Harry Styles jibe

Zayn Malik is apparently taking a fun swipe at former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles, but fans aren’t having it.

In a clip circulating on social media, Malik, 33, is seen on stage during one of his recent shows at Las Vegas’ Dolby Live. He thanked his fans for coming out to see him and joked about ticket prices.

“I just want to say a big, big thank you to each and every single one of you for being here with me tonight,” Malik said in the video. “You could have been anywhere, but you decided to spend your night with me.”

He joked, “Hopefully, the ticket prices weren’t too high. Just saying.”

Zayn’s comment came as Harry is facing criticism over high ticket prices for his Together, Together tour shows. The prices ranged from £44.10 (approximately $60) to £466.25 ($643) for standard seated tickets for dates at London’s Wembley Stadium, per BBC News.

In contrast, the price range for Zayn’s Las Vegas residency tickets is $30 to $270, with resale tickets of best seats costing much more.

However, netizens cricitized Zayn for his joke, arguing that his prices are high too.

One redditer wrote, “His tickets are high too wtf is he talking about?????”

Another wrote, “Him saying while his own concert had dynamic prices and 1k+ tickets” calling the Pillow Talk hitmaker, “just dumb, lazy and jealous.”

“I’d take it if he was selling tickets for £30 but this comes off a bitter,” added another.

China executed 11 people convicted of intentional homicide, fraud and other crimes linked to a cross-border scam operation, after the country’s top court approved their death sentences, authorities said Thursday.

The announcement was published on the webiste for the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, China’s highest state body responsible for criminal prosecution and oversight.

The executions followed a ruling and execution order from the Supreme People’s Court, which upheld lower court judgments against members of the so-called Ming family criminal group.

They were accused of running large-scale telecommunications fraud and gambling operations from northern Myanmar that involved more than 10 billion yuan, roughly $1.4 billion.

5 new podcasts to listen to this week

This week’s podcast picks understand the art of conversation.

1. gist. The Pod

Streaming platform: All streaming platforms and YouTube

Genre: Life and relationships

If you want to have a conversation that reaches beyond surface level, a few ingredients are needed, according to husband and wife duo Isaac and Lowellyn Peters – no filters, no small talk. Just real gist.

Gist is a Nigerian-English term usually used to describe general chit-chat and gossip. But for the Peters, also founders of conversation card game, gist The Game, it’s defined “as having intentional conversations”.

In honour of this, the pair have now launched gist. The Pod, a new bi-weekly podcast series where the hosts slow down and actually talk about everything from love, marriage and culture, to healing, growth – and the things they’re still figuring out in real time.

The first episode open with, “What is the question or answer that confirmed you wanted to be together?” and sets the tone for the rest of the couple’s rich, yet tender, conversation.

They discuss the genesis of their relationship, fatherhood, family politics, the wounds of ‘church hurt’, and the hoops they had to jump through to build the relationship they have today.

It’s moving to hear Isaac – also a poet – admit marrying Lowellyn meant that he had to “grow”, and her open up about the insecurities she once grappled within their relationship.

One question can change everything and gist. The Pod is a true testament of that. If you enjoy deep, authentic and meaningful conversations, then this podcast is a must listen.

2. British Scandal

Streaming platform: All streaming platforms and YouTube

Genre: True crime

The Post Office scandal has already been dissected across news bulletins, documentaries and an award-winning ITV drama, yet British Scandal still finds a way to make it seem like breaking news.

This four-part series doesn’t chase shock for its own sake; instead, it lets the weight of the injustice accumulate.

What makes the storytelling effective is the hosts’ refusal to flatten the story into a single villain or heroic arc. Alice Levine and Matt Forde focus on the human cost of institutional stubbornness: shopkeepers who lost livelihoods, reputations and years of their lives because a computer system was treated as gospel.

Each episode deepens the sense that this was not a technical error but a moral failure, sustained by bureaucracy and pride.

Despite the dramatisation within the voice acting, there isn’t need to rewrite the facts into melodrama, as they’re damning enough. The series excels at pacing – revealing how long the truth took to surface, and how exhausting it was for those forced to prove their innocence.

Finishing the series with an interview with the barrister that defended the postmasters in court doesn’t leave you angry but unsettled, reminding you how ossified bureaucracy can cause immense harm when no one questions it.

He also reveals his struggles at boarding school and how inclination to “self-destruct” and gamble with his life.

It was when he was 25 and ended up in intensive care in India after previous stints in rehab that Branson decided to go sober and realised that he was “meant to be alive”.

Following on from this, he then founded Seedlip to offer proper non-alcoholic options to people, as well as his own neurodivergent charity after being diagnosed with ADHD and autism.

Trubin joins Champions League’s goal-scoring goalkeepers, delivers a classic Mourinho moment:

0
Trubin joins Champions League's goal-scoring goalkeepers, delivers a classic Mourinho moment:

Hollywood scriptwriters couldn’t have penned it. Most fans wouldn’t dare to dream it. It was a moment that could only come from a team led by the self-anointed “Special One.” A 98th-minute header from Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin sealing a 4-2 win for José Mourinho’s side over Real Madrid and, with it, a place in the UEFA Champions League playoffs.

When the 24-year-old Ukrainian made his way up the pitch at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica’s campaign appeared over. Though a brace from Andreas Schjelderup and a penalty from Vangelis Pavlidis had put the hosts in a position to claim the three points they needed to advance, Kylian Mbappé‘s brace up the other end of the pitch meant that the Portuguese side were level with Marseille on goal difference and trailing them on goal scored in the Champions League table.

But with Aleksandar Stankovic making it 3-0 for Club Brugge against Marseille 10 minutes prior, there remained a pulse in Benfica’s veins. And that heartbeat was sent to jubilant overdrive when Trubin soared over a Madrid defence — reduced to nine through red cards to Rodrygo and Raúl Asencio — met Fredrik Aursnes‘ free kick, and headed past Blancos keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Lisbon erupted, and Trubin suddenly became the fastest man on the pitch as his delirious teammates tried to chase him down to celebrate his goal. Mourinho took off running down the touchline, pointing to the stands and hugging a ballboy in his path. Having come into the game under pressure and after a dressing down from his own club’s fans, it was the coach’s first win against his former side Madrid, and, in trademark style, it was delivered in a manner that will ensure that nobody forgets it.

Trubin is now just the fifth goalkeeper to net in the Champions League, joining Hans-Jörg Butt (who did it three times), Vincent Enyeama, Ivan Provedel, and Sinan Bolat.

What’s more, Trubin’s header ensured that Benfica now enter the draw on Friday, where they will face either Inter Milan or … you guessed it … Real Madrid. Special.

Goal-den gloves: Every keeper to score in Champions League history

ESPN’s Chris Wright brings us a run down of the other members of the UEFA Champions League’s Grand Order of Goal-Scoring Goalies (or ‘UCLGOGSG’ for short,) and how they came to earn their place.

Ivan Provedel

Ivan Provedel ensured his own Champions League immortality when he emerged as Lazio‘s unlikely saviour in a group stage game against Atlético Madrid in 2023-24. The Italian side had been trailing by a goal since the 29th minute and it looked like they were heading for a dispiriting home defeat in their Group E opener as the last few seconds of stoppage time wicked away. However, with 94:19 minutes on the clock, their goalkeeper (wearing the No. 94 jersey and who is also 1.94 metres tall and was born in 1994) flung himself at Luis Alberto’s angled cross, steered it past his opposing number and rescued a 1-1 draw with the final action of the game. Amazingly, Provedel’s header against Atleti was actually the second 95th-minute equalising goal of his professional career, having previously scored deep into added time to salvage a dramatic 2-2 draw for Juve Stabia against Ascoli in Italy’s Serie B back in 2020.

Vincent Enyeama

Prior to Provodel’s heroics, Enyeama was the most recent addition to the club when the former Nigeria captain found the net from the penalty spot for Hapoel Tel-Aviv against Lyon in 2010. Having taken over as Hapoel’s principal penalty taker in 2008-09, Enyeama netted several spot kicks for the Israeli club including a goal in the 2009-10 State Cup final. He then repeated the feat in the Champions League, firstly with a successful conversion against FC Salzburg in the qualifying rounds before netting another against Lyon in the group stage — albeit scant consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

Sinan Bolat

The second member of the UCLGOGSG gained entry in 2009 when Standard Liege’s Turkey international got on the scoresheet in 1-1 draw against AZ Alkmaar. While not the first to score outright, Bolat was the first goalkeeper to notch a non-penalty goal in the competition and did so with a precious 95th-minute header that salvaged a draw for the Belgian club that qualified them for the Europa League knockout phase at the expense of AZ, who finished bottom of Group H and dropped out of European competition entirely.

Hans-Jörg Butt

Put simply, Butt is one of football’s most prolific goal-scoring goalkeepers to have ever played the game. The former Germany international rifled home 32 career goals in all competitions during his career, an impressive tally that puts him in the top 10 on the all-time list. He holds the record for the most goals scored in one single European professional league (26 goals in the Bundesliga) and the record for the most goals scored by a goalkeeper in the Champions League, with three to his name.

Oddly, Butt’s treble of Champions League penalty goals were all scored for different clubs but came against the same opposition, with Juventus on the receiving end each and every time. Butt’s first goal came for Hamburg in a frantic 4-4 draw against Juventus in the first group stage of the 2000-01 Champions League. The second contributed to Bayer Leverkusen‘s underdog run to the 2001-02 final, the opener in a 3-1 win over Juve in the second group stage.

He then had to wait six years for his third, notching Bayern’s first goal in a vital 4-1 comeback win against the Bianconeri that sealed the Bavarians’ progression into the knockout phase.

Kim and Khloe Kardashian gush over Kylie Jenner, Timothee Chalamet

Khloé Kardashian couldn’t be happier seeing Kylie Jenner thriving in her relationship with Timothee Chalamet.

The reality TV star made a rare comment about her younger half-sister’s headline-making relationship with the Marty Supreme star on the latest episode of her Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, with their older sister Kim Kardashian joining as a guest. Reflecting on a recent family dinner hosted by the SKIMS founder, Khloé shared she was both surprised and proud of Kylie — a self-proclaimed homebody — for attending with her beau.

“I was saying I’m so proud of myself,” Khloé began. “This is so stupid — just for going last night and like being there. I was there for like six hours,” she added.

“I was really proud Kylie came,” Kim added, before Khloé jumped in with even more enthusiasm. “I was so — Kylie had the best time,” she said, noting the beauty mogul stayed until 1:30 a.m. after arriving first. “I was so proud of her. And Timmy, they had the best time,” she added, revealing her sweet nickname for the Golden Globe winner.

Jenner and Chalamet were first linked in April 2023 and made their red-carpet debut two years later. Since then, he’s been increasingly present at family gatherings, from Oscars after-parties to Christmas celebrations.

Earlier this month, Chalamet even acknowledged the relationship publicly. “Lastly, I’ll just say, thank you to my partner of three years,” he said while accepting his Critics’ Choice Award. “Thank you for our foundation. I love you. I couldn’t do this without you.”
