Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statewide disaster declaration on Thursday to prevent the potential spread of the New World screwworm fly into the Lone Star State, as he seeks to better protect livestock and wildlife.

The governor’s declaration allows the Texas New World Screwworm Response Team to use all state government prevention and response resources to prevent the spread of the parasite into Texas.

The New World screwworm fly is spreading north from Mexico toward the border it shares with the U.S.

“Although the New World screwworm fly is not yet present in Texas or the U.S., its northward spread from Mexico toward the U.S. southern border poses a serious threat to Texas’ livestock industry and wildlife,” Abbott said in a statement.

“State law authorizes me to act to prevent a threat of infestation that could cause severe damage to Texas property, and I will not wait for such harm to reach our livestock and wildlife,” he continued.

With his statewide disaster declaration, the governor said the Texas New World Screwworm Response Team “can fully utilize all state government prevention and response resources to prevent the re-emergence of this destructive parasite.”

Texas officials are prepared to fully eradicate the pest if need be, the governor said.

Abbott has taken preemptive action against the New World screwworm threat by directing the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Animal Health Commission to establish a joint Texas New World Screwworm Response Team.

The governor also highlighted a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create a new $750 million domestic sterile New World Screwworm production facility near Edinburg, Texas.

The Department of Agriculture said in August that the New World screwworm is a “devastating pest.”

“When NWS fly larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of a living animal, they cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. NWS can infest livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds and, in rare cases, people. It is not only a threat to our ranching community, but it is a threat to our food supply and our national security,” the department said at the time.

Mötley Crüe has achieved a major victory in court against former guitarist Mick Mars.

A retired federal judge ruled on Thursday that bandmates Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil could remove the founding member as an officer and director in their business affairs.

In 2023, Mars filed a lawsuit against Mötley Crüe, alleging that the band attempted to oust him from the group. As per People magazine, the removal occurred after Mars withdrew from a U.S. stadium tour in September 2022 due to his chronic illness.

For those unversed, the 74-year-old was diagnosed with the spinal disease when he was 27.

Patrick J. Walsh, a retired federal judge, ruled that bandmates Nikki, Tommy, and Vince were within their rights to dismiss Mars as both a band member and officer of Mötley Crüe Inc.

“Mars argues that it is immoral for him to be cast aside after forming the backbone of this group for more than four decades merely because his age and AS symptoms precluded him from performing,” Walsh said, as per Variety.

“I am not unsympathetic to this argument but it is not for me in the context of this arbitration to weigh in on the morality of the band’s decision,” a judge added.

In the final ruling, the judge ordered Mars to pay back $244,000 to the band from the advance because he missed 69 live shows.

Argentina’s government on Thursday declared an emergency in Patagonia, where wildfires have ripped through vast tracts of forest since the start of the Southern Hemisphere summer.

The biggest blazes are in southern Chubut province, where at least 45,000 hectares of forest — an area roughly the size of San Francisco — have gone up in smoke since mid-January.

Hundreds of firefighters are trying to prevent the flames reaching populated areas.

President Javier Milei’s spokesman Manuel Adorni said a state of emergency would take effect in Chubut, Rio Negro, Neuquen and La Pampa provinces of Patagonia on Friday.

The measure is expected to facilitate cooperation between provincial and national firefighters.

Los Alerces National Park, a vast reserve of pristine forest and glacial lakes, has been among the worst-affected areas.

In the past few days, colder weather and drizzle have provided some respite for firefighters, the deputy director of the federal emergencies agency, Ignacio Cabello, told El Chubut FM radio.

“Today, the weather conditions helped,” Manuel, a volunteer firefighter in the Chubut town of Cholila, which is threatened by flames, confirmed.

“We are ensuring that the fire doesn’t continue to expand,” the man, who did not wish to give his surname, told AFP.

Another major fire near the small Andean town of Epuyen was said by provincial authorities to be “85% contained.”

The fires have been fanned by high temperatures and strong winds at the height of summer.

Pakistan has scored a key procedural breakthrough in its long-running Indus Waters Treaty dispute with India after the Court of Arbitration directed New Delhi to produce operational records from two contested hydropower projects.

The Court of Arbitration, constituted under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), issued a 13-page Procedural Order directing India to submit operational logbooks from the Baglihar and Kishanganga hydroelectric plants by February 9, 2026, or formally explain any refusal to do so.

Pakistan has been instructed to specify the exact documents it seeks by February 2, 2026.

A hearing in the Second Phase on the Merits is scheduled to take place in The Hague from February 2 to 3, regardless of India’s participation.

A high-level Pakistani delegation, led by the attorney general and including the Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters, will depart for The Hague on Saturday. Pakistan’s international legal team and the ambassador to the Netherlands will also join.

Pakistan has consistently argued that India has misused the IWT’s hydropower provisions by exaggerating installed capacity and anticipated electricity load to justify excessive water storage — a practice Islamabad says directly undermines Pakistan’s water security.

The court agreed that the operational records — known as “pondage logbooks” — appear directly relevant and material to the issues under consideration, particularly in determining how installed capacity and anticipated load should be calculated for maximum permissible pondage.

Pakistan has indicated it may seek interim measures to prevent further prejudice to its treaty rights, including steps to halt actions that could aggravate the dispute.

While the court did not rule on interim measures at this stage, it confirmed that only a court of arbitration — not a Neutral Expert — has the authority to grant such relief.

Independent legal experts say the ruling marks an important procedural win for Pakistan, strengthening its position that India’s actual hydropower operations, rather than theoretical design claims, are central to determining treaty compliance.

‘Rambo 6’ delves into John Rambo’s past, set before the events of 1982’s ‘First Blood’

John Rambo is heading back to the beginning.

Production has officially started on a new Rambo prequel, with Noah Centineo stepping into the iconic role made famous by Sylvester Stallone. Filming is underway in Bangkok, Thailand, with the origin story set years before the events of 1982’s First Blood, which launched the long-running franchise.

Centineo, 29, leads the film as a younger version of the troubled war veteran. Lionsgate confirmed on January 29 that the ensemble cast includes Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White and Tayme Thapthimthong, rounding out the project as cameras roll.

The film is directed by Jalmari Helander, known for Sisu and its upcoming sequel, from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

“When I was 11, I saw First Blood for the first time, and it changed my life,” Helander said in a statement. “Rambo wasn’t just a film to me — it stayed with me growing up and was a defining influence on why I wanted to become a filmmaker.”

He added, “This is Rambo stripped down, raw and real — a survival story about endurance, persistence and lost innocence.”

Stallone first brought John Rambo to the screen in First Blood, portraying a Vietnam War veteran pushed to his breaking point after clashing with local law enforcement. The film became a box office success, earning $125 million worldwide and spawning multiple sequels, most recently 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood.

'Hopefully' no need for military action against Iran: says Trump - SUCH TV

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he hoped to avoid military action against Iran, which has threatened to strike American bases and aircraft carriers in response to any attack.

Trump said he is speaking with Iran and left open the possibility of avoiding a military operation after earlier warning that time was “running out” for Tehran as the United States sends a large naval fleet to the region.

When asked if he would have talks with Iran, Trump told reporters: “I have had, and I am planning on it.”

“We have a group headed out to a place called Iran, and hopefully we won’t have to use it,” the US president added, while speaking to media at the premiere of a documentary about his wife, Melania.

As Brussels and Washington dialled up their rhetoric and Iran issued stark threats this week, UN chief Antonio Guterres has called for nuclear negotiations to “avoid a crisis that could have devastating consequences in the region”.

An Iranian military spokesman warned Tehran’s response to any US action would not be limited — as it was in June last year when American planes and missiles briefly joined Israel’s short air war against Iran — but would be a decisive response “delivered instantly”.

Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia told state television that US aircraft carriers have “serious vulnerabilities” and that numerous American bases in the Gulf region are “within the range of our medium-range missiles”.

“If such a miscalculation is made by the Americans, it will certainly not unfold the way Trump imagines — carrying out a quick operation and then, two hours later, tweeting that the operation is over,” he said.

Iranian officials have blamed the recent protest wave on the two countries, claiming their agents spurred “riots” and a “terrorist operation” that hijacked peaceful rallies sparked over economic grievances.

Iranian authorities acknowledge that thousands were killed during the protests, giving a toll of more than 3,000 deaths, but say the majority were members of the security forces or bystanders killed by “rioters”.

Billboards and banners have gone up in the capital, Tehran to bolster the authorities’ messages. One massive poster appears to show an American aircraft carrier being destroyed.

An official in the Gulf, where states host US military sites, told AFP that fears of a US strike on Iran are “very clear.”

“It would bring the region into chaos, it would hurt the economy not just in the region but in the US, and cause oil and gas prices to skyrocket,” the official added.

Qatar’s leader Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian held a call to discuss “efforts being made to de-escalate tensions and establish stability,” the Qatar News Agency reported.

Trump had threatened military action if protesters were killed in the anti-government demonstrations that erupted in late December and peaked on January 8 and 9.

But his more recent statements have turned to Iran’s nuclear programme, which the West believes is aimed at making an atomic bomb.

On Wednesday, he said “time is running out” for Tehran to make a deal, warning the US naval strike group that arrived in Middle East waters on Monday was “ready, willing and able” to hit Iran.
