TEMPE, Ariz. — Koa Peat scored 21 points, fellow freshman Brayden Burries added 17 and No. 1 Arizona beat rival Arizona State 87-74 on Saturday, setting a school record with 22 straight wins to start the season.

Arizona (22-0, 9-0 Big 12) is one of just two unbeaten teams in the nation, along with Miami (Ohio). The Wildcats’ winning streak also tied the Big 12 record to start a season, originally set by Kansas in 1996-97.

Arizona’s 22-0 record broke a tie with the 2013-14 team for best start in school history, according to ESPN Research. It also ties the longest winning streak in school history, set from 1914-17.

The Wildcats – who shot 60% in the second half – scored the first six points after the break to take a 44-38 lead and never trailed again. Burries found Peat on a pinpoint full-court pass that led to a dunk for a 56-47 lead with 13:10 left.

The gritty Sun Devils cut into the deficit several times, but could never quite generate enough offense to keep pace. Noah Meeusen scored 16 points while Maurice Odum added 15.

Arizona State (11-11, 2-7) has dropped nine of its last 11 games.

Ivan Kharchenkov and Peat made threes on back-to-back possessions to push Arizona up 71-60, leading to a relatively comfortable final few minutes. Motiejus Krivas fought through foul trouble to finish with 15 points. Tobe Awaka had 13 rebounds.

The Sun Devils fell to 2-10 all-time against the nation’s No. 1 team. They last beat the top-ranked team when they knocked off Kansas on Dec. 22, 2018.

Arizona State led for much of the first few minutes but the Wildcats used a 13-2 run to take a 25-18 lead with 7:00 left in the first half. Peat made a layup to cap the run, finishing through contact that left him bloodied around his left eye.

The Sun Devils recovered, tying the game at 38 just before halftime when Meeusen made a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining.

Dozens confirmed dead as extreme cold continues to grip large part of U.S.

Dozens confirmed dead as extreme cold continues to grip large part of U.S.

Dozens of people across multiple states have been confirmed dead after a powerful winter storm swept through large parts of the country, leaving a trail of damage and extreme cold lingering in its wake.

As of Saturday, CBS News has confirmed at least 81 deaths directly caused by storm conditions or weather-related accidents, with officials in numerous states reporting about two dozen additional deaths that appear to be related to the winter weather.

Hypothermia from exposure to the cold, car accidents, snowplow accidents, sledding accidents and sudden cardiac emergencies linked to shoveling snow were among the causes of death reported so far. New York City officials say 13 people have been found dead in the cold there, though not all of their causes of death had been confirmed yet.

The winter storm swept across two-thirds of the United States from Jan. 23-26, affecting some 200 million people with a mixture of heavy snow, rain, sleet and freezing temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Frigid conditions have persisted through the week, with cold air gripping the eastern half of the country and continuing to drive temperatures far below normal, CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan said.

The weather service warned that this “could be the longest duration of cold in several decades.”

Extreme cold alerts remained in effect across parts of the eastern U.S. through the week, and another surge of Arctic air was on its way.

Ongoing power outages

Hundreds of thousands of customers remained without power for days after the weekend’s snowstorm. As of Saturday, the total had declined to about 191,000, primarily in southern and southeastern states, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us

In the wake of the storn, outages were most widespread in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, with some outages also reported in Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia.

New snowstorm possible

Meteorologists have also warned of another Arctic blast headed southward into the U.S. that was expected to arrive by the weekend, potentially bringing with it a string of record low temperatures. Pockets of the Northeast should prepare for more snow, as cold air moving across the Great Lakes fuels some downwind snowfall off Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Lake effect snow warnings were in effect through Thursday night in portions of upstate and western New York, including in cities such as Buffalo, Syracuse, Watertown and Rochester, which could see 1 to 2 feet of snow or more, according to the National Weather Service.

Massachusetts residents were also bracing for what meteorologists have described as a potential “bomb cyclone” over the upcoming weekend, CBS Boston reported, although the forecast for that possible storm remained uncertain at mid-week. A bomb cyclone is a rapidly strengthening storm system, and meteorologists said this one could bring snow, wind and offshore wave heights similar to a hurricane.

Ellen DeGeneres celebrates Portia de Rossi’s 53rd birthday

Ellen DeGeneres is honouring her wife, Portia de Rossi, on her birthday.

De Rossi turned 53 on Saturday, and DeGeneres, 68, marked the occasion with a heartfelt Instagram post.

“Happy birthday to my favorite person in the world,” the former talk show host wrote alongside a photo of de Rossi holding a dog while standing in a garden, dressed casually in a light blue button-down shirt and jeans.

The birthday celebration comes just days after DeGeneres marked her own 68th birthday on January 26. At the time, she shared a photo of herself with de Rossi, acknowledging the weight of the moment with a reflective caption.

“I’m holding space for what’s happening in our world and holding close what I’m grateful for,” she wrote. “Like my wife. And cookies.”

DeGeneres and de Rossi have been married since 2008 and renewed their vows in 2023 during a ceremony officiated by Kris Jenner, with a performance by Brandi Carlile. The vow renewal was a surprise planned by de Rossi for DeGeneres’ 50th birthday.

Over the years, DeGeneres has frequently credited her wife as a constant source of love and stability and called de Rossi “the greatest gift” in her life at one point.

Tony Romo referred to Taylor Swift as ‘Travis Kelce’s wife’ to mess with fans

Tony Romo referred to Taylor Swift as ‘Travis Kelce’s wife’ to mess with fans

Tony Romo has opened up about his viral comment from 2023 when he prematurely called Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce’s wife, while commentating during a Kansas City Chiefs game.

Just a few months after the Grammy winner and NFL tight end first went public with their relationship, Romo seemed to accidentally get Swift’s status wrong as he said, “As you see Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift in the audience. Err, I’m sorry, girlfriend,” Romo said before his co-commentator Jim Nantz responded: “Not yet.”

In a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, the former Dallas Cowboys player admitted his mistake was actually deliberate.

“I did, kind of, play with the fans. I think I was like, ‘And there’s…’ I think I said, ‘his wife,’” he said. “I did that on purpose and people were like, ‘Do you know something?’ I was like, ‘Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second [and] just mess with you a little bit.’”

Many fans gushed over the comment at the time. “NO WAY THE REPORTER JUST ACCIDENTALLY SAID KELCE’S WIFE AHHHH,” one ecstatic fan wrote on X alongside a still image of Swift screaming.

“I laughed right out loud. Kinda liked the sound of that, actually,” another fan admitted.

Someone else posted their messages with the caption: “Commentator called taylor travis’s wife.” In the screenshot, her friend’s text read: “They need to play Lavender Haze at half time.”

Romo’s apparently bold prediction came true as the couple announced their engagement two years later.

In August 2025, Swift and Travis announced their engagement with a series of Instagram photos showing the tight end on one knee under an arch of roses in the center of a garden.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the joint post was captioned.

A close-up photo showed off the massive engagement ring, a round brilliant-cut old mine diamond bezel-set in yellow gold, according to Vogue. Travis himself worked with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry to design the ring.

The post garnered more than 1.5 million likes within 10 minutes of being shared by the couple — and over 10 million within an hour.

While the couple has largely kept the details of their upcoming wedding under wraps, they have still opened up about their relationship with Kelce admitting last month during an episode of his New Heights podcast that he and the “Love Story” singer have never had an argument.

“Well, it’s only been two and a half years, and you’re right. I haven’t gotten into an argument. Never once,” he said to George Clooney, who was a guest on the podcast that week.

How did Tim Curry’s guest appearance on ‘Criminal Minds’ happen?

How did Tim Curry

Criminal Minds, a crime drama on CBS, has featured several guest appearances over its long run, including that of actor Tim Curry.

But it was Kirsten Vangsness who brought the star to the show. She played Penelope Garcia, an FBI technical analyst, on the show.

The discussion began by naming the show’s favourite celebrity guests. The actress tells People, “That’s impossible. The first one that came to my head is Tim Curry, because he’s Tim Curry, but there’s been so many.”

After sharing his name, Vangsness says she brought him to the show. “Tim Curry is my favorite because I was at the gym working out and I heard a voice say, ‘I worship at your throne,’ and I was like, ‘Whose voice is that?’ And it was Tim Curry.”

Currey told her at the time, “I love you on the show,” adding, “I went to work, and I was like, ‘Tim. He wants to be on the show,’ and then they put him on. They didn’t even know that he watched it, so I feel a little responsible for that.”

It is worth noting that Vangsness joined the cast as a recurring character in 2005; however, she was promoted to the main cast, leading her to stay on the show until the final season in 2020.

Judge orders release of 5-year-old boy detained by immigration authorities in Minnesota

Judge orders release of 5-year-old boy detained by immigration authorities in Minnesota

A federal judge on Saturday ordered the release of a 5-year-old boy whose detention by immigration authorities in Minnesota last week sparked international outcry.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said in a scathing court order that the Trump administration must release Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrián Alexander Conejo Arias by Tuesday.

The father and son were taken into custody by immigration authorities on Jan. 20, as the child was on his way home from preschool. The pair have since been detained in South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.

The case drew widespread outrage after an image of Ramos — wearing a blue hat and a backpack as he was being taken into custody by immigration authorities — went viral online.

“Observing human behavior confirms that for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency,” Biery wrote in his order, referring to the boy’s detention. “And the rule of law be damned.”

Representatives for the Department of Homeland Security, Ramos and his father did not immediately return requests for comment.

Witkoff says talks with Russian envoy were 'productive and constructive' amid Trump admin's peace push

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said he had “productive and constructive meetings” with the Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

“We are encouraged by this meeting that Russia is working toward securing peace in Ukraine and is grateful for [the president’s] critical leadership in seeking a durable and lasting peace,” Witkoff wrote on X.

During a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Witkoff said that progress had been made and that there had been “lots of good things happening between the counterparties discussing the land deal.”

“I think the people of Ukraine are now hopeful and expecting that we’re going to deliver a peace deal sometime soon,” Witkoff added.

The meetings occurred on Saturday in Florida, according to Witkoff, and included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and White House senior advisor Josh Gruenbaum. Witkoff and Kushner have been two of the key players from the Trump administration not only in the Russia-Ukraine deal, but also others, including the Israel-Gaza peace plan.

Witkoff, Kushner and Gruenbaum also met with Putin earlier this month in Moscow shortly after the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Following the meeting in Moscow, Witkoff, Kushner, Gruenbaum and other U.S. representatives met with negotiators from Ukraine and Russia. The talks were said to be constructive, despite the fact that obstacles to peace remained.

“A lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X. “As a result of the meetings held over these days, all sides agreed to report back in their capitals on each aspect of the negotiations and to coordinate further steps with their leaders.”

ZELENSKYY TOUTS ‘CONSTRUCTIVE’ TRILATERAL TALKS BETWEEN THE US, RUSSIA AND UKRAINE IN ABU DHABI

Nearly four years after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion, Ukrainians are facing a brutal winter and Russian strikes on Kyiv’s energy resources have made conditions worse. However, President Donald Trump said on Thursday at his Cabinet meeting that Putin had agreed to a temporary pause in targeting Kyiv and other places in the region experiencing the frigid weather.

“And because of the cold, extreme cold — they have the same that we do — I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and the cities and towns for a week,” Trump said, adding that Putin had “agreed to do that.” The president classified the weather in the region as being “record-setting cold.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday that Trump had made the request for Putin to stop targeting Kyiv until Feb. 1 “in order to create favorable conditions for negotiations,” The Associated Press reported. The outlet noted that it was odd that the Kremlin spokesperson mentioned Feb. 1, as it would mean it was only a two-day pause. Additionally, the AP reported that the cold weather forecast is set to get worse after Sunday.

Over to you, City: Arsenal recover power and poise in classic Arteta win

Over to you, City: Arsenal recover power and poise in classic Arteta win

LEEDS, England — Whatever fate awaits Arsenal in this Premier League title race, they are determined to do it their way. Much of the fallout from last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United centered on suggestions the Gunners have to do something different from here to win their first league crown since 2004.

Mikel Arteta spoke of a clear-the-air meeting a day later in which they vowed to “live and play with enjoyment … courage … and conviction they are going to win it.”

Dropping captain Martin Ødegaard against Leeds hinted at something different. But in the end, they thrashed Leeds United 4-0 on Saturday with a performance that was quintessentially Arteta’s Arsenal.

One goal from a recycled corner, another direct from a corner, a Viktor Gyökeres close-range finish and substitute Gabriel Jesus‘ late strike secured a win that extends their lead at the top of the table back to seven points.

It wasn’t necessarily “fun” — the football was one again formulaic — but it was Arsenal at their effective best. They strangled the life out of Leeds and their vociferous Elland Road crowd with a level of control they only momentarily threatened to relinquish as the home side tried to rouse themselves early in the second half.

There was courage on display, and they certainly had conviction. But significantly, this was Arsenal being Arsenal. There was no timidity or self-doubt. This is how Arteta believes Arsenal can win the league: Dominate possession and territory, extract an advantage from set pieces and send on the “finishers” to complete the job.

The combination was a hugely impressive response to their winless three-game run. No wonder Arteta was delighted.

“The mentality is good,” Arteta said. “I mentioned it to you, to play with that level of enjoyment about where we are and then with the conviction to believe in what we do, how good we are and that we can beat any opponent.

“We certainly did that. And then you have to show the quality to do it in this league to prove it and it came out in great ways from different ways as well.”

Arteta hails Madueke for performance after Saka’s warmup injury

Mikel Arteta reacts to Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Leeds United, and the performance of Noni Madueke, a late addition to the starting lineup.

The first hour was the most fiercely contested part of this game, and during that period, Arsenal’s physical power and dead-ball prowess made the difference. Noni Madueke only started this game because Bukayo Saka suffered a hip injury in the warmup, but he was their most effective threat.

His 27th-minute corner was cleared, but Arsenal worked the ball back out to the England international, who produced a superb delivery which Martín Zubimendi glanced into the net.

The noise in this famous old ground rarely subsided in the opening 45 minutes, but there was an audible hush whenever Arsenal won a corner. Perhaps they knew what was coming.

The Gunners’ seventh corner of the half was whipped into the near post with such ferocity by Madueke that Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow could only rise above the gaggle of players in front of him and punch the ball into his own net.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke made a double change at the break and they began to enjoy more of the ball, but Ødegaard was excellent when he came on alongside Gabriel Martinelli after 61 minutes. His cute pass released Martinelli, who found a cross for Gyökeres to steer home on 69 minutes, snuffing out any hope of a Leeds comeback.

Jesus added a fourth four minutes from time, collecting Ødegaard’s pass and expertly working space for himself in the box before finishing low into the net.

Leeds ended with just three shots and an expected goals tally of 0.15 — the third-lowest figure of any team Arsenal have played across all competitions this season.

This defensive resilience was the foundation of their ascent to the top of the table in the first place and it returned emphatically here.

“[That control] is something that we want,” Arteta said. “You always have an opponent in front of you who is going to test that and you have to execute the actions and be very, very consistent if you don’t want to concede anything. Really impressive because it is a really tough team to do that and between all of us, we did it.”

Farke could not argue: “They were on it from the first to the last second. Whatever we did, they always had an answer. We were not really able to create chances.”

Arsenal’s attacking cohesion remains unconvincing. “Own goal” briefly drew level as their top scorer in the league this season before Gyökeres’ intervention put him clear on six. After wasting a glorious chance when clean through at 2-0, he continues to face a battle to justify his €63.5 million fee, but his goal will help.

Collectively, Arsenal recovered their power and poise to reassert themselves in the title race with Manchester City facing Tottenham and Aston Villa hosting Brentford on Sunday.

Arteta talked about “bringing the temperature down” in his meeting with the players Monday. But nothing will have done it like winning so emphatically as this, especially as they reinforced their own identity while doing so.

Over to you, City.
