‘SNL’ alum Garrett Morris shares one major regret on his 89th birthday

Saturday Night Live alum Garrett Morris is celebrating his 89th birthday with one major regret.

The 89-year-old American actor and comedian, the first Black cast member of Saturday Night Live (SNL), has turned 89 today, February 1, 2026.

Morris appeared on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980 then he worked on famous television sitcoms, including 2 Broke Girls, The Jeffersons, Martin, and others.

He also proved his name in the world of films, as the movies to his credit are Car Wash and Cooley High.

Car Wash will mark its 50th anniversary in October this year, while Cooley High completed 50 years in June 2025.

Morris gave PEOPLE magazine an interview before his birthday, saying, “Ask me what I’ll be doing on my birthday.”

“Regretting the passage of time,” the legendary actor claimed.

Voicing his thoughts on retirement, he said, “I just felt if you enjoy your work, why not do it to the best you can in whatever way you are asked to do it until you transform.”

“I mean, let’s be realistic, there are less roles for an 80-year-old who’s got arthritis — but there are roles out there,” Morris noted.

Budget 2026: Bourses Feel STT Hike Effect On Markets To Subside; NSE Says No Impact On IPO

Markets are used to tweak in taxation and the adverse impact of the steep hike in securities transaction tax (STT) will not last long, leading bourses said on Sunday.

NSE, the largest stock exchange, feels that the move to curb volumes will not have any impact on its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) plans, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Ashish Kumar Chauhan said.

“What has been raised is the STT has been increased in a minor way. Broadly, markets are used to having STT on options and this time it has also been increased on futures but broadly, I do not see any large impact on the IPO of NSE or otherwise asset valuations in the stock market going forward,” Chauhan told PTI.

Rival BSE’s Managing Director and Chief Executive S Ramamurthy said markets react in a “bit adverse” way whenever any such changes are proposed by the government and exuded confidence that gradually things will settle down.

“This is not the first time that STT is increased. When any such move is announced, the market reaction is a bit adverse to start with and then it stabilises,” he said.

The proposal to increase the STT on futures and options will also encourage long-term equity investments, he said, adding that it may also lead to a shift of money from the arbitrage funds to banks’ fixed deposits as the returns one stands to make get on par.

The moves to hike the STT on the F&O segment was attributed as one of the key reasons that led to a sharp correction in the equity markets after the Budget speech by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

It can be noted that as per studies by Sebi, over 90% of retail investors’ trades in the F&O segment lead to losses, and the capital markets regulator has also taken steps to reduce the volumes in the past.

Sitharaman announced the STT hikes, saying the move is aimed to “provide reasonable course correction” in the F&O segment in the capital market and generate additional revenues for the government.

Accordingly, she announced a proposal to raise the STT on futures to 0.05% from the present 0.02% and STT on options premium and exercise of options to be raised to 0.15% from the present rate of 0.1 per cent and 0.125%, respectively.

If the volumes go down, entities like brokerages and bourses that depend on the transactions for revenues may see a dent in their toplines, which led to the investor unease.

The BSE scrip closed the session 10% down at the end of trade on Sunday.

Both Chauhan and Ramamurthy welcomed other announcements in the Budget presented by Sitharaman earlier in the day.

Chauhan called it a fiscally disciplined and growth-oriented Budget, while Ramamurthy said it looks as capital formation along with the fiscal discipline.

The proposals on infrastructure building and also futuristic technologies like artificial intelligence were lauded by Chauhan.

Ramamurthy mentioned the Budget’s efforts to encourage investments in municipal bonds and deepen the corporate bond market, and added that the public capital expenditure will help the country in the long term by having the desired multiplier effects.

Air India resumes direct Shanghai-New Delhi flights after nearly six years

Shanghai (China): The Consulate General of India in Shanghai welcomed the resumption of Air India’s direct flight services between Shanghai and New Delhi, marking a major step forward in restoring people-to-people, business and institutional connectivity between India and China.

According to an official release, the inaugural Shanghai-New Delhi flight departed today from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, carrying over 230 passengers on board the Boeing 787 aircraft. The relaunch comes after a gap of nearly six years and represents a significant milestone in normalising bilateral air connectivity following the suspension of services in early 2020.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Pratik Mathur said, “The resumption of direct flights between Shanghai and New Delhi is a tangible expression of the renewed momentum in India-China engagement. Enhanced air connectivity is essential for facilitating trade, tourism, academic exchanges and people-to-people contacts, particularly between India and East China. We are pleased to see Air India restoring this important link.”

As per a release, Air India will operate the route four times a week using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring modernised cabins and enhanced onboard services. The restored service reflects the growing demand for travel between the two countries and the steady recovery of cross-border mobility. It will also support commercial, educational and cultural exchanges between India and the Yangtze River Delta region, one of China’s most economically dynamic clusters.

The Consulate General of India in Shanghai remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen connectivity and deepen cooperation across trade, investment, tourism, education and cultural exchange, the release stated.

How long you’re contagious with the flu — and when it’s safe to go out

0
Woman feeling sick

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The U.S. is in the thick of flu season, with many states reporting “moderate to very high activity” of influenza-like illness, according to the CDC.

With influenza A (H3N2), or subclade K, making up a large portion of the circulating viruses, doctors emphasize the importance of getting the most recent flu vaccinations, staying at home while sick and washing hands frequently, among other prevention tactics.

If you’ve been exposed to or infected with influenza, here’s what to know about how long the virus is transmissible.

CAN THE FLU SHOT ACTUALLY GIVE YOU INFLUENZA? DOCTORS SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

“You are typically contagious with the flu for five to seven days after symptoms start,” Dr. Samantha Picking, the Massachusetts-based senior director of immunizations at Walgreens, told Fox News Digital.

“However, some groups remain contagious for longer periods. Young children and people with weakened immune systems can spread the virus for more than seven days, sometimes extending to two weeks or longer.”

It’s a myth that people can’t be contagious until they experience symptoms, according to Picking.

“The flu is most contagious during the first three to four days after symptoms appear,” she said. “However, you can begin spreading the virus a day before feeling ill and may remain contagious for up to a week or longer.”

WANT TO AVOID GETTING SICK ON A PLANE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? MEDICAL EXPERT REVEALS BEST SEAT

The incubation period — the time between exposure to the virus and when symptoms start — is typically two days, though it can range from one to four days, the pharmacist added. People with mild symptoms can still spread the flu.

“The vaccine still provides protection against serious illness resulting from the subclade K variant that seems to be going around,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

For anyone who is starting to feel sick or has been around someone who has the flu, Picking recommends limiting contact with others to avoid spreading the virus.

RECORD-BREAKING FLU NUMBERS REPORTED IN NEW YORK STATE, SPARKING WARNINGS FROM OFFICIALS

“To be safe and prevent spreading the virus, stay home until you’re fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine,” Picking advised. “For most healthy adults, this typically corresponds to five to seven days after symptoms begin.”

People can take extra precautions, like masking, for a few days after returning to normal activities, she added.

“However, use your best judgment and consult a healthcare professional if you’re unsure whether you’re well enough to leave the house,” she added. “If your other symptoms aren’t improving, or you generally still feel ill, it’s wise to stay home and practice good hand hygiene.”

Young children and people with weakened immune systems may be able to spread the virus to others for a longer time period, sometimes for up to 14 days, according to the pharmacist.

“Stay home until you’re fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine.”

Picking noted that a cough can linger for weeks after other symptoms have abated. “While a lingering cough is not necessarily a sign that you’re still contagious, it’s considerate to mask up and practice good cough etiquette when around others,” she advised.

Some antiviral medications, when initiated early on, can shorten how long someone is contagious with the flu.

“These medications work best when started within two days of seeing symptoms,” Picking noted. Anyone who is interested in antivirals should speak with a healthcare provider or pharmacist for personalized guidance.

Flu symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat and runny nose.

Subclade K has been detected as the culprit in rising global cases, causing more intense symptoms and higher risk of spread.

“It’s becoming evident that this is a pretty severe variant of the flu,” Dr. Neil Maniar, professor of public health practice at Boston’s Northeastern University, previously told Fox News Digital. “Certainly, in other parts of the world where this variant has been prevalent, it’s caused some severe illness, and we’re seeing an aggressive flu season already.”

From political drama to personal trauma, Fatima Bhutto details all in her new memoir | The Express Tribune

Fifteen years after publishing a memoir that shook Pakistan’s most powerful political dynasty, writer and activist Fatima Bhutto is returning with a deeply personal account of abuse, survival and renewal.

Bhutto’s forthcoming memoir, The Hour of the Wolf, details a decade-long coercive and abusive relationship that she says she endured in silence, believing it to be love. The book marks the first time she has spoken publicly about the relationship.

“I didn’t really want to do it,” Bhutto said of writing the memoir in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian. “Because I felt ashamed, I felt embarrassed, I did feel all those kinds of things. But I also know that if I’d read something like this, it would have helped me.”

Bhutto, a member of Pakistan’s most famous political family and the niece of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, rose to international prominence with her 2010 memoir Songs of Blood and Sword. The book re-examined the Bhutto dynasty and held Benazir partly responsible for the murder of her father, Murtaza Bhutto.

The new memoir recounts how Bhutto met her partner, referred to only as “The Man”, in New York in 2011 while she was touring for her first book. She describes him as “uninhibited, blazingly sure of himself … beautiful, rugged, old-school masculine … a free spirit”.

Their relationship, largely long-distance, lasted 11 years. Bhutto writes that it suited her frequent travel for journalism, novels and literary festivals, but says her partner became increasingly controlling, alternating between charm and cruelty.

His behaviour, she writes, included verbal abuse, humiliation in public places and prolonged periods of silence and contempt. “He would switch from dazzling to demonic without warning,” Bhutto said, adding that he gradually isolated her from friends and normal social life.

Bhutto said she did not recognise the relationship as abusive for years because it was not overtly physical. “I had read stories and seen things throughout my life about women who’d been put in dangerous situations by men. I just never thought I was one of them because it hadn’t been physical, you know?”

In the book, however, she recounts one incident in which he bit her finger so hard it caused nerve damage. “The only way to survive 11 years of that is to think of it as a love story,” Bhutto said. “And you think it’s toughening you up for, you know, the great success that awaits you.”

Bhutto said secrecy was central to the relationship. Her partner insisted they remain hidden, discouraging her from introducing him to friends or family or sharing a life in the same city.

The relationship ended in 2021 after Bhutto, then 39, realised he would never commit to the family life she wanted, despite her undergoing fertility preservation. She later met her husband, Graham, in 2022 and had two children within three years.

Now settled with her family, Bhutto says she wrote the memoir after deciding to “just tell the truth”. “And then it fell out of me – it didn’t even pour, it fell,” she said.

Bhutto added that while she felt damaged by the experience, she believes she ultimately survived what was intended to break her. “I felt damaged by him, but I know that the damage he wanted to do was total.”

Bhutto is the daughter of Murtaza Bhutto, the eldest son of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and prime minister in the 1970s. In 1985, her uncle Shahnawaz Bhutto, then 26, was found dead in Nice. The family has long believed he was poisoned.

Born in 1982, Bhutto spent her early childhood in Karachi before living in exile with her father in Syria following Shahnawaz’s death. She has written that Songs of Blood and Sword, her 2010 memoir, was in many ways a tribute to her father, whom she adored.

“I adored my father because he adored me,” Bhutto said. “He would make it fun, so it wasn’t like you were holed up in some scary place. But you still understand, something’s not right.”

Bhutto described a childhood shaped by secrecy and sudden movement, recalling being told to pack a bag at a moment’s notice and being cautioned against sharing details of her whereabouts. “The need for secrets? I understood that because I have had to live like that, even until now,” she said.

Political danger, she said, was openly discussed within the family. “The adults in my family never really hid anything from us,” Bhutto recalled. “They didn’t ever say, ‘leave the room, children, because we have to talk about something’.”

The family returned to Karachi in 1993, when her aunt Benazir Bhutto was beginning her second term as prime minister. A bitter feud soon erupted between Benazir and her brother Murtaza over party leadership and allegations of corruption. In 1996, Murtaza Bhutto was killed in a police shoot-out outside the family home. Fatima Bhutto was 14.

After her father’s death, Bhutto lived with her stepmother and younger brother, at times in hiding in Syria for security reasons. “They definitely traumatised us in this way,” she said, recounting how she was told she might be targeted next.

She said her upbringing left her wary of political power rather than drawn to it. “It’s made me uncomfortable around power though, rather than craving it,” she said. “I’m very well aware of the dangers of power. I know no one is different.”

While she has long ruled out a political career, Bhutto remains deeply engaged as a writer and activist. In recent years she has focused extensively on Gaza, amplifying Palestinian voices and editing the essay collection Gaza: The Story of a Genocide, published last October.

Reflecting on documenting war while becoming a mother, Bhutto said the contrast was impossible to ignore. “When I was in labour, I was in a hospital… I wasn’t being bombed,” she said.

Asked how she has managed to process personal trauma alongside global crises, Bhutto said the experience has reshaped her. “I thought I was a fairly compassionate, sensitive person beforehand,” she said. “But it just kind of rips you open in a new way.”
