A Georgia man shot a pair of police officers who were questioning him at a hotel after he invited them into his room on Sunday, killing one and seriously wounding the other, according to officials.

The shooting suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur, was also shot by one of the officers during the incident, Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said during a news conference.

Andrews was transported to a hospital for medical treatment and is expected to survive. He will be transferred to the county jail once he is released from the hospital.

The shootout happened on Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, located about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The two officers responded to a Holiday Inn Express after a person in South Carolina reported that someone had fraudulently used their credit card at the hotel, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. The agency said the officers spoke with the front desk clerk, who informed them that the room was being rented by Andrews.

After learning that Andrews had an active warrant out of DeKalb County for failure to appear, the officers went to the hotel room to arrest him, according to the agency.

McClure said the suspect greeted the officers at the door to his room and invited them inside.

“They began discussing the scenario or the incident with him,” McClure said. “And at some point the suspect produced a handgun and, in an unprovoked attack, fired at our Gwinnett County police officers.”

The chief identified the officers as Pradeep Tamang and David Reed.

Tamang, 25, died from his injuries at a hospital. He joined the police department in 2024.

Reed was hospitalized in serious but stable condition on Sunday afternoon. He joined the department in 2015.

Gov. Brian Kemp said he was “mourning the loss of a brave officer” and “praying for the swift recovery of another.”

“This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis, and we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians,” Kemp said on X.

Andrews has been charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which customarily handles shootings involving officers in the Peach State, is handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.

The agency said the case will be handed over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review once the probe is complete.

NHL outdoor game sees its 1st goalie fight between Vasilevskiy, Swayman

NHL outdoor game sees its 1st goalie fight between Vasilevskiy, Swayman

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning credited the first goalie fight in an NHL outdoor game for helping to spark their historic Stadium Series comeback win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

With 8:59 left in the second period and the Bruins leading 5-2, Lightning forward Brandon Hagel tried to poke the puck from under Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman after a save. Swayman then jumped on top of Hagel next to his crease, leading to a melee between the teams while the Lightning were on a power play. Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy skated from his crease to the opposite blue line during the chaos.

“I just saw Sway was swinging the blocker on [Hagel] a bit, so it was just a reflex to go to the red line and challenge him. He accepted,” Vasilevskiy said.

Swayman spotted the Tampa Bay goalie, dropped his stick and skated out to meet Vasilevskiy as the two engaged near center ice. Swayman took off his gloves and mask and signaled to Vasilevskiy to remember to remove his mask before the fists flew.

“I don’t want to hit his helmet, so I’m glad we didn’t do that,” Swayman said.

The Lightning goalie nicknamed “The Big Cat” grabbed Swayman’s collar and started throwing left hands. The Boston goalie wasn’t able to get much offense in before Vasilevskiy wrestled him to the ice.

Did Swayman know that Vasilevskiy was a lefty before their fight?

“No,” the Bruins goalie said curtly, with a laugh. “Glad we both had our first gig against each other. Really worthy opponent.”

Vasilevskiy gave him a tap on the back and then tapped the back of Swayman’s head in appreciation of the moment, grinning widely as the fans roared inside Raymond James Stadium.

“When we both fell, we just kind of said to each other nice words. It was super nice. It’s one of the biggest moments for me, because I never fought in the NHL,” Vasilevskiy said. “Big thanks to him. He was great in the net all game and great in the fight as well.”

Swayman was also appreciative.

“He wanted to win, which is good. So did I. So that’s game respecting game,” he said. “I’m fighting the biggest, toughest goalie in the league. It wouldn’t be my first choice, but glad we got the first one out of the way. Probably retire after that.”

The crowd of nearly 65,000 fans stood and cheered during the confrontation, and then again when the referee announced the goalies had both received five-minute majors for fighting. Players on both benches were on their feet, too, slapping their sticks against the boards in appreciation and respect for their netminders.

“He was throwing lefts. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I didn’t want to be the other guy,” Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov said. “I was so happy. I was so fired up. I think the bench felt it. Everyone in the building felt it. Ever since that fight, the game was turned. Vasy had to do it, I guess. He had to wake us up.”

The Lightning would score twice on 5-on-3 power plays over the next 5:12, cutting the Bruins’ lead to 5-4 heading into the third period. Kucherov tied the score in the third period, and the Lightning eventually won 6-5 in a shootout.

Tampa Bay’s rally from a four-goal deficit to win marked the largest comeback victory in franchise history and the largest in an NHL outdoor game.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper said he could feel the momentum starting to swing before the fight, but the goalie throwdown was an emotional high the Lightning needed at that moment.

“I was like, ‘Thank goodness something positive was going to happen to our game,'” he said. “I give Boston a lot of credit. They took it to us and we weren’t prepared for it. Vasy was pissed.”

Hagel said he felt the fight was “a big turning point in the game.”

So did Kucherov, who was also convinced that his goalie would win the fight.

“I knew he was going to beat the wheels off of Swayman right away,” Kucherov said. “We call him ‘White Tyson’ now.”

VAR review: How did VAR deconstruct the Chelsea vs. West Ham melee?

VAR review: How did VAR deconstruct the Chelsea vs. West Ham melee?

Video assistant referee causes controversy every week in the Premier League, but how are decisions made and are they correct?

This season, we take a look at the major incidents to examine and explain the process, both in terms of VAR protocol and the Laws of the Game.

Andy Davies (@andydaviesref) is a former Select Group referee, with over 12 seasons on the elite list, working across the Premier League and Championship. With extensive experience at the elite level, he has operated within the VAR space in the Premier League and offers a unique insight into the processes, rationale and protocols that are delivered on a Premier League matchday.

Referee: Anthony Taylor
VAR: Michael Salisbury
Time: 90+11 minutes
Incident: A mass confrontation between 20 players.

What happened: The mass confrontation in the final moments of Saturday’s thrilling London derby between Chelsea and West Ham highlighted the benefits of VAR.

With the best part of 20 players involved in the melee at the end of a last-gasp 3-2 win for the Blues, the challenge for the on-field officials was to identify all offenders and their actions. But it was hugely difficult given the number of players involved.

The issues began in the 11th minute of stoppage time, shortly after Enzo Fernández had scored. West Ham winger Adama Traoré threw Marc Cucurella to the ground and then clashed with João Pedro, who came in to defend his teammate.

The melee saw a host of other players arrive on the scene, and Traore and Pedro were cautioned, but a VAR check saw West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo dismissed for putting his hands around the throat of Pedro.

What is the process? A VAR review of the replays will be meticulous, but remember that the VAR can only intervene if they identify a violent act not picked up by the on-field officials.

Referee Anthony Taylor would have briefed his team before the match over the process he expects in such a moment. However, every situation is unique, and with three separate groups of players engaged in altercations at one stage, Taylor and his team needed to work hard to manage the situation and work out who to discipline.

The VAR and assistant VAR follow a similar process externally, as they look to identify standout players and their actions initially from the live feed, while the third member of the VAR team, the replay operator, lines up all the available angles for the VAR to review once the melee has settled and the on-field team have dealt with any transgressors in the moment.

The VAR has full access to the live on-field communication, so they will have worked through each action identified by Taylor to confirm that the reading of the incident was correct and didn’t meet the threshold of a violent action.

Once the VAR has confirmed all the on-field sanctions — in this case, the yellow cards for the two instigators, Traoré and Pedro — the RO will then present alternative angles that were not initially available on the “live” feed for the VAR to review and identify any additional offenses for violent conduct.

VAR review: The reverse angle of this incident showed Todibo grabbing Pedro around the neck in a violent manner, which clearly met the criteria for a red-card offense, and was bookmarked by Salisbury and added to the package to be presented to the referee in the on-field review.

Taylor didn’t need a second look when he was sent to the monitor, as Todibo’s actions made the decision straightforward and he was sent off for violent conduct.

Verdict: A good use of VAR to sweep up the on-field work done by Taylor and his team.

The refereeing team is always looking to identify the instigators for yellow cards, but also any additional acts of violent conduct and red-card offenses, and sometimes they need help.

In this case, Traoré and Pedro were cautioned for starting the whole thing, while Todibo crossed the line and received a straight red card for his actions. Which was all correct.

Why Is Share Market Rising Today? The domestic equity market on Monday surged by up to 0.7%, with the BSE Sensex surging by 582 points, or up 0.72%, at 81,305.20 in the afternoon trade and the NSE Nifty rising by 131 points, or up 0.52%, to trade above 24,950 at 24,959.27. After opening nearly flat, the NSE Nifty rose to the day’s high, then touched the day’s low before sharply recovering to trade at the day’s high of 24,959.

Among the 30 Sensex shares, 21 stocks were trading in the green. Among the top gainers were Power Grid, Adani Ports, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance, Asian Paints, and IndiGo, rising by up to 4.32%. The top laggards were Infosys, Axis Bank, Trent, Titan, TCS, Bajaj Finance, and Tata Steel, falling by up to 1.17%.

Key factors behind the market rally:

Value buying after sharp correction

Markets saw strong value buying following the steep sell-off in the previous session. On February 1, benchmark indices had recorded their sharpest percentage decline on a Budget Day in six years, as investors digested the implications of the Union Budget 2026-27. The correction prompted bargain hunting across select stocks.

Budget focus on long-term growth

Investor confidence was also supported by Budget announcements aimed at long-term growth. The finance minister unveiled measures to boost manufacturing, announced long-term tax incentives for global data centres, and outlined support for agriculture and tourism. The Rs 53.5 lakh crore Union Budget for 2026–27 signalled a commitment to fiscal consolidation while maintaining momentum in infrastructure spending.

Strengthening rupee

The rupee’s recovery also aided market sentiment. The domestic currency strengthened by 37 paise to 91.56 against the US dollar on Monday, a day after the Budget was presented, largely tracking the fall in crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 91.95 and later gained ground to 91.56, up 37 paise from its previous close.

Forex traders, however, cautioned that while the Budget provided reassurance, it did not offer immediate relief. They also flagged the government’s borrowing plan of Rs 17.2 lakh crore in the next financial year to fund a fiscal deficit estimated at 4.3 per cent of GDP as a potential overhang on sentiment.

Sharp fall in crude oil prices

Sentiment was further lifted by a sharp decline in crude oil prices. Brent crude, the global benchmark, slipped 4.14 per cent to $66.45 per barrel. Lower crude prices help ease inflationary pressures and improve India’s trade balance, both of which are supportive for equity markets.

Timothée Chalamet skips 2026 Grammys despite earning first nod: Here’s why

Timothée Chalamet was a no-show at the latest Grammy Awards, despite being nominated in the category of Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, his first nod at the ceremony.

The Marty Supreme star earned the nomination for his soundtrack work on the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, but failed to bag the Grammy.

While the honour went to the team behind Sinners, Chalamet’s absence ended up raising eyebrows as he has been a regular fixture during the current awards circuit.

However, it was his appearance at yet another awards event which forced him to skip the Grammys in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old actor was busy visiting the London Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, where he won the Actor of the Year prize.

Ahead of the ceremony, Chalamet joined British filmmaker Richard Curtis for a Q&A to discuss his latest work.

The London honour has become just one of the many which the American-French artist has collected for his performance as an aspiring table tennis athlete, Marty Mauser, in the film directed by Josh Safdie.

So far, Timothée Chalamet has scooped up a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice for Marty Supreme, among other accolades, while further nominations at the BAFTAs, SAG’s Actor Awards, and the Oscars still await.

Who has the most Grammys in history? A look at the record holders

Music’s biggest night has produced many record breakers since the Grammy Awards were first held in 1959, but one artist now stands above the rest. For fans searching who has the most Grammys, the answer is clear.

Beyoncé holds the record for the most Grammy Awards in history, with 35 wins. Her career spans decades, beginning with Destiny’s Child and expanding into a solo run that includes chart-topping hits and critically acclaimed albums.

Her recent work, including Cowboy Carter, has further cemented her place at the top of Grammy history.

Before Beyoncé set the record, the title belonged to classical conductor Sir Georg Solti. Solti earned 31 Grammy Awards during his career, largely for his work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Quincy Jones ranks next with 28 Grammys, recognized for his wide-ranging influence as a producer, arranger, and composer.

His work with Michael Jackson and many other artists helped shape modern popular music.

Bluegrass star Alison Krauss and jazz legend Chick Corea have each won 27 Grammys, highlighting their lasting impact in their respective genres.

Among groups, Irish rock band U2 leads with 22 Grammy Awards.

In hip hop, Jay-Z and Kanye West have each collected 24 Grammys.

  • Over 10m children to be inoculated against poliovirus in Sindh.
  • Five-day vaccination drive to target 6.5 million children in KP.
  • 11,000 teams to vaccinate 2.6 million children in Balochistan.

KARACHI/LAHORE/QUETTA: A nationwide vaccination campaign has been kicked off today, aiming to inoculate over 45 million children against the crippling poliovirus.

The vaccination campaign will see health workers going door-to-door to children in Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to vaccinate the children.

Polio, caused by a human enterovirus called the poliovirus, is most often spread by the faecal-oral route. Poliovirus enters through the mouth and multiplies in the intestine, with infected individuals shedding poliovirus into the environment for several weeks, where it can spread rapidly through a community, especially in areas of poor sanitation.

The vaccination comes weeks after the country’s poliovirus case tally for 2025 reached 31 after the disease was detected in a four-month-old girl from Union Council Spinwam-2 in North Waziristan.

The provincial tally for 2025 stands at 20 cases reported in KP, nine in Sindh, one in Punjab, and one in Gilgit Baltistan (GB) — a notable decrease from 74 in 2024.

In the vaccination campaign launched today, the health department said that over 80,000 polio workers will administer vaccination drops to more than 10 million children during a seven-day campaign in Sindh from February 2 to February 8.

As for the security arrangements, 7,703 police officers and personnel will be deployed for the polio workers’ security, said the Karachi Police spokesperson.

Of the said policemen, 2,724 belong to the East Zone, 2,90toom the West Zone and 2,070 to the South Zone.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah kicked off the vaccination drive in the province by administering anti-polio drops to children at a school in Karachi’s Chanesar Goth.

India will host the first Global Big Cat Summit this year, which will see heads of governments and ministers from 95 countries coming together to deliberate on collective strategies for conservation. This is what Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced while presenting the Union Budget 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha.Describing the summit as a major step towards strengthening international cooperation, Sitharaman said it would focus on coordinated action to protect big cats across their natural habitats. “This year, India is hosting the first-ever Global Big Cat Summit, where leaders and ministers from 95 range countries will deliberate on collective strategies for conservation,” she said during her Budget speech.

The initiative is expected to open the door to deeper global collaboration, expanded habitat protection, and a renewed emphasis on sustainable wildlife tourism — developments that could have lasting implications for how, where, and whether big cats survive in the wild.India, home to the largest number of wild tigers in the world, has always taken a leading role in the conservation of big cats, and has always been proactive in implementing schemes like Project Tiger, and the recent reintroduction of cheetahs. The budget announcement is in line with the country’s agenda for conservation at a time when habitat destruction, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict threaten the existence of big cats.Read more: ‘I am leaving America’: IT professional shares why despite having a successful career she is forced to quit USThe move also builds on India’s growing role in global wildlife conservation. Sitharaman highlighted the International Big Cat Alliance, which was established last year, and aims at fostering cooperation among countries that are home to species such as tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, and jaguars. The proposed summit is expected to provide a platform for aligning conservation policies, sharing best practices, and mobilising international resources.

Beyond wildlife diplomacy, the Union Budget outlined several tourism and conservation-linked initiatives. The government announced plans to develop ecologically sustainable mountain trails in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in the Araku Valley of the Eastern Ghats and parts of the Western Ghats. Key turtle nesting sites in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala will also be developed into conservation-linked eco-tourism trails. The budget further stressed on creating thematic tourism circuits, including bird-watching trails at Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, along with the development of 15 archaeological sites, such as Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur, and Leh Palace, into experiential destinations that integrate heritage conservation with visitor engagement.
