Earlier in the day, markets had opened cautiously and slipped into the red before staging a modest recovery. On the policy front, the RBI’s six-member Monetary Policy Committee unanimously voted to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent. The central bank also retained its neutral stance, indicating it may stay on hold for now. The decision came as inflation remained under control and growth concerns eased following higher government spending in the Budget and reduced tariff pressures after a trade deal with the United States, news agency PTI reported.Announcing the policy, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, “To further promote financing to the real estate sector, it is proposed to allow banks to lend to REITs with certain prudential safeguards.” Market participants said this move could improve long-term funding visibility for the real estate sector and the broader credit ecosystem.Among Sensex stocks, ITC was the top gainer, jumping over 5 per cent. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid and Bajaj Finserv also ended higher. On the other hand, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Adani Ports, Asian Paints, Eternal and HCL Tech were among the laggards.Commenting on the session, Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Limited, said domestic markets remained subdued for most of the day before recovering on the back of buying in FMCG and private banking stocks.“The RBI’s policy announcement was broadly in line with expectations, maintaining status quo on interest rates while reiterating a constructive growth outlook,” he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.However, he added that markets had expected a slightly more dovish tone. The RBI’s decision to retain a neutral stance led to a rise in India’s 10-year bond yields. Nair also pointed out that global investors remain focused on US-Iran negotiations, crude oil prices, and developments in artificial intelligence and technology.Foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 2,150.51 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.In global markets, Asian indices such as South Korea’s Kospi, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended lower, while Japan’s Nikkei closed higher. European markets were mostly trading in the green. In the US, stocks had ended sharply lower overnight, with the Nasdaq falling 1.59 per cent.Meanwhile, Brent crude rose 1.20 per cent to $68.34 per barrel. On Thursday, the Sensex had dropped over 500 points, while the Nifty had declined more than half a per cent.

Bad Bunny promises Super Bowl Halftime ‘huge party’ for everyone

The anticipation for the Super Bowl Halftime Show is getting to fever-pitch heights as Bad Bunny is gearing up for the dazzling show on February 8, 2026.

Bad Bunny outlines the key details at the Super Bowl Halftime Show press conference on February 5.

The Puerto Rican musician appeared for an official interview before making waves at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Bad Bunny, while teasing his fans, said, “I really, as I said, want people to have fun. It’s going to be a huge party, it’s going to be what people can always expect from me, I don’t know if this is something.”

Addressing his fan’s confusion about following Spanish lyrics, Bad Bunny continued, “It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be easy. People only have to worry about… I know that I told them that they had four months to learn Spanish. They don’t even have to learn Spanish. It’s better if they learn to dance. That’s the only thing they need to worry about and enjoy. And of course, choose your team at the game.”

He offered a sneak peek into what’s going on for the big day, saying he’s getting ready for his performance by “eating smashburgers” and “[thinking] about the Super Bowl Halftime Show at 4 a.m.”

Bad Bunny promises Super Bowl Halftime ‘huge party’ for everyone

Feeling the heat of America’s favorite sport, he admitted, “Wake up, work out, [drink] my coffee, not think too much about it. Last night, I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking about it. But yeah, I want to think that it’s just 30 minutes doing something that I love, that I like, and it’s just like that.

Bad Bunny only has one message for his fans: enjoy the vibe at Super Bowl LX. He said, “I’m trying to enjoy it and I know that I’m going to have fun. All the crew, all the people. They’re going to have fun that day. That’s what I’m trying to focus on. Just enjoy the moment, enjoy what is happening, what I’m doing. Trying not to put pressure or something on it.”

For the unversed, Bad Bunny made an appearance at Super Bowl LIV in 2020, along with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show will kick off between 7:30 and 9 p.m. ET on NBC from Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California, on February 8, 2026.

Katherine LaNasa lifts the lid on her character’s protectiveness for Emma in ‘The Pitt’

Katherine LaNasa lifts the lid on her character

Katherine LaNasa recently got candid about her character’s relationship with newcomer Emma in The Pitt.

The 59-year-old American actress is playing the role of Dana Evans in the medical procedural drama television series created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells and Noah Wyle.

Season 2 of The Pitt shows Dana serving as a mentor for a new graduate from nursing school, Emma, played by Laëtitia Hollard.

Dana, a senior nurse, looks after Emma, trains her, and teaches her how the ER works.

While conversing with PEOPLE magazine about her character’s dynamic with one of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s new additions, LaNasa admitted that her character’s protectiveness for Emma is actually her way of conveying a clear message that she is enough for Emma after an angry patient punched her in the first season.

The Emmy winner said, “I think it is a way of protecting Dana’s self. It is a way of making up for the punch to make sure she knows how to be safe. That will be a big theme in our relationship throughout the show.”

She went on to sing praises of Hollard’s performance by quipping, “The actress who played Emma knocked it out of the park and I’m really, really proud of her.”

“It was interesting because she had never acted in television before. This was her first job. She just graduated college. I was showing her the ropes a little bit with work as well,” LaNasa shared.

Before concluding, it is pertinent to mention that new episodes of The Pitt season 2 roll out every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.

Saudi Arabia launches passports for kingdom’s beloved camels

Saudi Arabia launches passports for kingdom's beloved camels

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has announced plans to issue passports to the kingdom’s millions of camels, to help better manage the country’s prized herds.

The ministry of the environment, water and agriculture promised the initiative would enhance the “productivity and efficiency in the sector and build a reliable reference database for camels”.

A social media post from the ministry on Tuesday included a picture of the document: a green passport stamped with the country’s coat of arms and a golden image of a camel.

The passport will “contribute to organising sales and trading operations by regulating commerce and transport, ensuring official documentation, protecting owners’ rights, and facilitating proof of ownership,” according state-backed broadcaster Al Ekhbariya.

In 2024, the government estimated there were around 2.2 million camels in the kingdom.

Camels have long been a vital mode of transportation in Arabia, conferring status on their owners and fuelling the rise of a lucrative breeding industry.

The kingdom also hosts beauty contests for camels at annual festivals, where Saudi enthusiasts spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on animal contestants — and the unscrupulous sometimes seek an illegal advantage.

Organisers have in recent years cracked down on cosmetic enhancements, a malpractice that has thrived amid stiff competition and despite heavy penalties.

Methods to make the camels’ lips droopier and their humps more shapely are particularly frowned upon by the authorities who want to encourage a natural look.

Camels have been essential to life on the Arabian peninsula for millennia, with research published in 2021 suggesting life-sized carvings of camels and horses hewn into rock faces in Saudi Arabia could be around 7,000 years old.

When and how to watch today’s Olympics opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Games

0
When and how to watch today's Olympics opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Games

The Olympics return with one of the most-watched moments of any Winter Games: the opening ceremony. This year’s opening ceremony promises to redefine Olympic tradition, as Milano Cortina 2026 marks the first time a Winter Games has taken a multi-centered approach, with celebrations spreading across Italy’s Olympic venues rather than a single stadium.

The ceremony at San Siro Stadium in Milan will feature blockbuster performances, the iconic Parade of Nations and the lighting of not one but two Olympic cauldrons.

With the United States sending its largest-ever contingent of winter athletes to compete across 16 sports, there’s plenty of reason for fans to tune in. Whether you’re planning to watch the ceremony live or catch the primetime encore, understanding your viewing options ensures you don’t miss a moment of this historic event.

What time does the 2026 Olympics opening ceremony start and end?

The opening ceremony time for the 2026 Winter Olympics is Friday, Feb. 6, with live coverage starting at 2 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. The ceremony is expected to run approximately three hours, concluding around 5 p.m. ET.

For viewers who can’t watch the Olympics opening ceremony live, NBC will air an enhanced primetime encore presentation at 8 p.m. ET, giving fans a chance to experience the spectacle during evening hours.

How to watch the 2026 opening ceremony live on cable

Traditional cable subscribers can watch the opening ceremony on NBC, which will broadcast both the live afternoon coverage and the primetime encore.

NBC Sports legend Terry Gannon will host the ceremony and will be joined by Mary Carillo. Three-time Olympic snowboarding champion Shaun White will provide commentary during the Parade of Nations. NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico will also contribute to coverage remotely from California, where he’s preparing to call Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8.

The broadcast will feature comprehensive coverage of the ceremony’s historic elements, including performances by Grammy Award-winner Mariah Carey, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Golden Globe winner Laura Pausini. For the first time in Winter Olympics history, viewers will also witness the simultaneous lighting of two Olympic cauldrons, one at Arco della Pace in Milan and another at Piazza Dibona in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Where to stream the Olympics opening ceremony

The most comprehensive way to watch the Olympics opening ceremony is through streaming platforms. Peacock will carry live coverage of the entire ceremony, with the primetime encore also available to stream.

Peacock’s ad-supported subscription starts at $7.99 per month and provides access to not just the opening ceremony but every Olympic event throughout the games, which run through Feb. 22. The ad-free Premium Plus tier is available for $16.99 per month and includes the ability to download select content for offline viewing.

Beyond Peacock, viewers can watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics through the NBC app, NBC Sports app and at NBCOlympics.com and NBC.com. All streams are available across mobile devices, tablets and connected TV platforms.

Are there free ways to watch the opening ceremony?

There are several options to watch the Olympics opening ceremony for free, making this historic event accessible to viewers without cable subscriptions or streaming services.

The most straightforward free option is watching via your local NBC affiliate using a digital antenna. NBC’s over-the-air broadcast will carry both the live coverage and the primetime presentation at no cost.

For streaming, Peacock occasionally offers free trial periods for new subscribers. While Peacock doesn’t currently have a standard free tier, checking the platform before the ceremony may reveal promotional offers. Additionally, NBCOlympics.com typically streams select Olympic content, though the full opening ceremony may have viewing restrictions.

Viewers should also check to see if their TV provider includes NBC and Peacock access as part of existing packages, as many cable and satellite services now bundle these offerings.

Will there be replays of the 2026 Olympics opening ceremony?

NBC’s primetime encore at 8 p.m. ET on Feb. 6 serves as the primary replay option for viewers who miss the live broadcast. This enhanced presentation will include additional context and highlights optimized for evening audiences.

Beyond the day-of replay, Peacock subscribers will have access to the full ceremony on demand, allowing viewers to watch or rewatch at their convenience throughout the games. NBC Sports platforms may also feature condensed highlight packages and key moments from the ceremony in the days following the event.

What makes the Milano Cortina 2026 opening ceremony unique?

This year’s ceremony breaks with Olympic tradition by spreading celebrations across multiple Italian cities rather than concentrating everything at San Siro Stadium. The theme “Armonia” (harmony in Italian) reflects this distributed approach, with simultaneous athlete parades planned for Predazzo, Livigno and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The dual cauldron concept draws inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s famous geometric interlacings, symbolizing harmony between Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo while paying tribute to Italy’s artistic heritage. The flames will burn in synchrony from Feb. 6 through Feb. 22.

Follow along with live coverage during the ceremony

Stay up to date with real-time updates, analysis and behind-the-scenes moments by following CBS News coverage throughout the opening ceremony. Our live blog will track every major moment, from the Parade of Nations to the lighting of the twin Olympic cauldrons.

Could the Epstein scandal topple U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer?

Could the Epstein scandal topple U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer?

London — So far, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hasn’t been linked to any suggested wrongdoing revealed by the Epstein files. But his decision to give another politician whose ties to Jeffrey Epstein have been laid bare by the documents the vital job of ambassador in Washington D.C. has drawn a ferocious backlash.

As the most tumultuous week in his premiership ends, Starmer is facing calls from his political opponents, and some party allies, to step down from Britain’s top job.

What did he know, and when did he know it? Those are the big questions facing Starmer amid outrage over his decision last year to appoint Peter Mandelson as Britain’s top diplomat in the United States, despite Mandelson’s known ties to Epstein.

Documents released by the U.S. Congress last year showed Mandelson maintained contact with Epstein after the convicted pedophile was released from jail, and the latest massive dump of files by the Justice Department last week raised damning questions about him possibly sharing state secrets with the American financier.

What’s in the Epstein files about Peter Mandelson?

Starmer may have hoped he’d dealt with the Mandelson scandal when he fired him from the U.S. ambassadorship last September. That came after the U.S. House of Representatives released files showing Starmer’s Labour Party colleague had maintained a close relationship with Epstein for years after his 2008 conviction on charges of solicitation of prostitution and procuring a child for prostitution.

But last Friday brought a political earthquake. The latest documents released by the Department of Justice appear to show that while Mandelson was a member of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s cabinet, and as that cabinet grappled with the seismic aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, he shared confidential, market-sensitive U.K. government information with Epstein. The information could feasibly have benefited the New York financier and his clients.

The London Metropolitan Police are now investigating Mandelson‘s actions to see if they amount to misconduct in public office, a charge which carries a potential life prison sentence. Starmer’s office said Tuesday that it had conducted its own review of the documents released Friday and that it appeared “safeguards were compromised” in relation to sensitive information being shared improperly.

Starmer says Mandelson “lied repeatedly” and betrayed Britain

On Wednesday, the prime minister told lawmakers that Mandelson — a veteran Labour party politician with a reputation as a ruthless, media-savvy problem solver — had continuously lied to the government about the extent of his relationship with Epstein throughout his vetting for the ambassadorship.

“Mandelson betrayed our country, our Parliament and my party … he lied repeatedly to my team when asked about his relationship with Epstein before and during his tenure as ambassador. I regret appointing him,” Starmer said.

While Starmer may not have been aware of the extent of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein when he tapped him to represent Britain in Washington D.C., British lawmakers have sharply criticized the government’s vetting process, stressing that some elements of Mandelson’s friendship with Epstein were public at the time he was given the position.

Peter Mandelson (left) is seen with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as he blows out the candles on a cake, in an undated photograph released by the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 19, 2025, as part of a trove of documents from its investigations into Epstein.

U.S. Department of Justice

The leader of the opposition Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has questioned Starmer’s judgement in elevating Mandelson to such a key diplomatic post.

“The Prime Minister cannot blame the process. He did know — it was on Google. If the Conservative research department could find this information out, why couldn’t Number 10?,” Badenoch said Wednesday in parliament, referring to the prime minister’s office at 10 Downing Street in London.

Pressure mounts on the prime minister

That skepticism has gained traction with British lawmakers across partisan lines, with Starmer facing a ferocious backlash from within his own party.

Rachael Maskell, a member of Starmer’s ruling center-left Labour Party, told the BBC that the prime minister’s position was “untenable” and he had “no choice” but to step down. Another Labour lawmaker, Jonathan Hinder, told the BBC that Starmer’s decision to appoint Mandelson as U.S. ambassador was a, “catastrophic error of political and moral judgement.”

In a social media post on Thursday, Badenoch called on Labour members of parliament to unite with her opposition party in pushing for a no-confidence vote in Starmer.

“My message to Labour MPs is if you want the change you know the country needs, come and speak to my team. I’m ready to talk seriously about a vote of no confidence. Because right now Britain is not being governed,” Badenoch said.

Starmer’s profuse apologies, and anger at an old colleague

The U.K. leader, meanwhile, has been in damage control mode. He agreed this week to a demand by lawmakers to publicly release documents related to Mandelson’s vetting and appointment, and the “due diligence” conducted by his government.

On Thursday, he also made a full apology to Epstein’s victims, and sought to quell the anger within his own party.

“I am sorry, sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people with power failed you, sorry for having believed Mandelson’s lies and appointing him,” Starmer said, addressing victims of Epstein’s sex crimes. “I was lied to. Deceived. Now, am I frustrated and angry that the good work we’re doing gets out of focus? … Of course I’m angry and frustrated about that.”

Speaking Thursday to CBS News’ partner network BBC News, Epstein survivor Marina Lacerda, who was groomed by the late sex offender as a young teenager, lauded Starmer for apologizing so directly, but said the concern going forward must be “what kind of justice will be brought.”

“I have to commend him for going on national television and admitting he was wrong and apologizing to us,” Lacerda told the BBC’s Newsnight program. “I think that’s a huge step, right. You have also people here in America that have not even tried to apologize to us. So I have to commend him for that.”

But for a prime minister who, according to political pollster YouGov, already had historically low approval ratings last month before the latest Mandelson revelations, the future looks deeply uncertain.

What are the odds of Starmer hanging on?

Bruising policy reversals on a number of unrelated issues last year had already weakened Starmer’s authority with his party. A stagnant economy and immigration concerns have also seen public support for Trump ally Nigel Farage’s populist, right-wing Reform Party surge, leading many analysts to question Starmer’s political acumen, and the viability of his premiership.

It’s unclear what may emerge when Starmer’s office releases the vetting documents related to Mandelson’s appointment. But on Thursday evening, the prime minister found himself in the most vulnerable position of his 18-month tenure.

An analysis shared Thursday by the Eurasia Group put the chances of Starmer keeping his job at just 20%.

“Previously, Eurasia Group believed the PM would be challenged for the Labour leadership this year and that his critics had a 65% chance of removing him,” the organization said. “We now think that prospect has risen to 80%.”

HARARE:

Fourteen-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi hammered a stunning 175 from just 80 balls as India thumped England by 100 runs in the Under-19 ODI World Cup final in Harare on Friday.

Suryavanshi, who has already made history by becoming the youngest player to post a century in the Indian Premier League, lashed 15 fours and 15 sixes in his innings which saw him score his last 151 runs from just 56 balls.

The left-handed opener was finally caught behind by England captain Thomas Rew off Manny Lumsden to leave India on 251-3 in the 26th over. They closed their 50 overs on 411-9.

England launched a spirited attempt at making the runs with opener Ben Dawkins making 66 and middle-order batter Caleb Falconer striking a sublime 115 from 67 balls.

Falconer was last man out, superbly caught by Khilan Patel, with England all out for 311 in 40.2 overs and India winning the title for the sixth time.

“I had faith in my skills that I can contribute in big games and today it happened,” said Suryavanshi who was named player of the match and player of the tournament, having finished with 439 runs in seven innings at 62.71.

Suryavanshi launched himself on to the international scene in 2024 as a 13-year-old with a 58-ball century against Australia in his Under-19 debut.

Picked up by Rajasthan Royals, Suryavanshi then announced himself on the world stage by belting his first ball fearlessly for six on his IPL debut.

Nine days later, he clubbed the Gujarat Titans bowlers to all parts as he scored the second fastest hundred in tournament history.

The teenager brought up his century off 35 balls with 11 sixes and seven fours to stand behind only West Indies great Chris Gayle, who took 30 balls to make a ton in 2013.

COLOMBO:

Pakistan captain Salman Agha defended off-spinner Usman Tariq’s unorthodox bowling action on Friday and called him the side’s “X factor” on the eve of their Twenty20 World Cup opener against the Netherlands in Colombo.

Tariq, who has played three T20 Internationals since his debut against South Africa in November, has been reported twice for a suspect bowling action in the Pakistan Super League. His bowling style culminates in him pausing near the crease before firing the ball in with a side-arm sling-shot action.

The 28-year-old claimed two wickets in his second T20 International, against Australia, and Australia batsman Cameron Green – one of his two victims in that match in Lahore – made a chucking gesture after being dismissed as he made his way off.

“I don’t understand why we are talking about his action because in my opinion it is a fair action,” Salman told reporters.

“He has been tested twice and he has been cleared.”

“I think there is no problem in his action. Yes, he is the X factor of the team, and where we feel that we need an X factor, we will definitely use him.”

Having decided to boycott their Group A contest against defending champions India over political tensions between the neighbouring nations, Pakistan will have little margin for error in their bid to qualify for the Super 8 stage.

Apart from India, the group also contains the United States, who stunned Pakistan via the Super Over in the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Salman said they would have to be at their best even against second-tier teams like Namibia or the Netherlands.

“It is very important because you haven’t played much against these sides and you don’t really know their strength and weakness are,” he said.

“So it is very, very important to bring your A game, and we as a team only think about how we can execute our plans for 40 overs.”

No room for error

Captain Salman Agha warned Friday that his Pakistan team must bring their “A-game” to the T20 World Cup to reach the knockout stages after forfeiting their group match against India.

The tournament has been overshadowed by an acrimonious political build-up as Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland and Pakistan refused to face co-hosts India in their Group A fixture.

Pakistan will lose two points for the forfeit and also suffer a significant blow to their net run rate, leaving little margin for error.

Even one abandoned match due to bad weather could complicate their path to the next round.

Pakistan open their campaign on Saturday in Sri Lanka against the Netherlands and will also face Namibia and the United States.

“We need to be cautious and bring our A-game,” Agha told reporters, admitting Pakistan have limited experience of the Netherlands and “don’t know many” of their players.

“We intend to unleash all our spin options because we feel they are vulnerable against quality spin,” he said.

The 2009 champions will lean heavily on their explosive opening pair Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub, with Agha slated for number three.

Former skipper Babar Azam — who has struggled for form — slots in at number four.

“Babar has been working overtime on his game. He’s a key player in these conditions and can change a match in a few overs. We depend on him heavily,” Agha said.

Pakistan are on a high after a 3-0 whitewash of Australia at home.

The team will seek advice from their government if they reach the knockout phase and meet arch-rivals India.
