  • BCB president says “deeply moved” by Pakistan’s efforts.

ISLAMABAD: At the request of friendly countries, the federal government on Monday directed the Pakistan national team to play its scheduled ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against India on February 15 in Colombo.

The prime minister made the decision after being briefed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding the outcomes of high-level deliberations held between the PCB, representatives of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

“The government of Pakistan has reviewed the formal requests extended to the PCB by the BCB, as well as the supporting communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other member nations,” read a statement issued by the government.

The decision has been taken with the aim of protecting the spirit of cricket, and to support the continuity of this global sport in all participating nations, it added.

The statement further said that the prime minister and the people of Pakistan extend their best wishes to the “Men in Green.”

“We remain confident that our team will carry the spirit of sportsmanship and national pride onto the field as they compete for global glory,” read the statement.

Pakistan had decided not to play against arch-rival India in solidarity with Bangladesh, who were kicked out of the tournament after they refused to travel to India, citing security concerns.

After Pakistan’s announcement, the ICC’s deputy chairman travelled to Lahore on Sunday to discuss the situation with the PCB chief in a meeting attended by the BCB president.

SL president thanks Shehbaz

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has thanked Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his role in ensuring the scheduled India–Pakistan cricket match in Colombo goes ahead as planned.

“Delighted that the eagerly awaited India and Pakistan match at the ongoing T20 Cricket World Cup in Colombo will proceed as planned,” he stressed.

“As co-host of the tournament, Sri Lanka thanks the ICC and all concerned for their efforts.”

“Sri Lanka hasn’t forgotten the solidarity shown by both India and Pakistan during the 1996 World Cup, when they played in Colombo at a time when others refrained due to security concerns,” he added.

‘No penalty for BCB’

Following the discussion, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalty will be imposed on the BCB over Bangladesh’s absence from the tournament.

“This dialogue covered several matters, including but not limited to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the broader outlook for cricket in South Asia,” read a statement issued by the ICC.

While reflecting on the Bangladesh cricket team’s unfortunate absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the global governing body for cricket reaffirmed BCB’s position as a valued Full Member, with a proud cricketing history and a vital role in the growth of the global game.

The statement said that BCB retains the right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC), should it choose to do so. This right exists under current ICC regulations and remains intact.

“The ICC’s approach is guided by its principles of neutrality and fairness and reflects the shared objective of facilitative support rather than punishment,” the statement added.

As part of this understanding, an agreement has been reached that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2031, subject to the usual ICC hosting processes, timelines and operational requirements.

“This reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s capability as a host and reinforces the ICC’s commitment to providing meaningful hosting opportunities across its membership to develop cricket in the country,” it added.

The ICC, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and BCB, along with other members, remain committed to continued dialogue, cooperation and constructive engagement in the best interests of the sport.

All stakeholders acknowledge that the spirit of this understanding is to protect the integrity of the game and preserve unity within the cricket fraternity.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said: “Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is regrettable, but it does not alter the ICC’s enduring commitment to Bangladesh as a core cricketing nation.”

He added: “Our focus continues to be on working closely with key stakeholders including BCB to ensure the sport grows sustainably in the country and that future opportunities for its players and fans are strengthened.”

He said that Bangladesh remains a priority cricket ecosystem deserving of long-term investment in its development, competitiveness and global integration, and is not defined by short-term disruptions.

Separately, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam, in a statement, requested Pakistan to play their scheduled game against India.

A day after visiting Pakistan, the BCB president expressed gratitude to the PCB chief for his support.

“The BCB wishes to express its profound and heartfelt gratitude to PCB Chairman Mohsin Raza Naqvi, his Board and the cricket fans of Pakistan. Throughout this period, the PCB has demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and solidarity,” read the statement issued by the BCB.

The BCB president said that Dhaka was “deeply moved” by Pakistan’s efforts to go above and beyond in supporting Bangladesh in its dispute with the ICC.

“Following my short visit to Pakistan yesterday and given the forthcoming outcomes of our discussions, I request Pakistan to play the ICC T20 World Cup game on 15 February against India for the benefit of the entire cricket eco system,” he said.

The BCB also appreciated ICC and all involved for their positive roles in trying to overcome the recent crisis.

A day earlier, the PCB and the ICC along with the BCB held talks for more than five hours with Naqvi, BCB President Aminul Islam and ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja in attendance.

During the meeting, the sources said, the ICC responded positively to Bangladesh’s demands, and a formula to address grievances with the BCB has been prepared. Both ICC and BCB exchanged proposals, while the PCB acted as the main coordinator during the discussions.

ICC-BCB saga

Tensions flared between the cricket boards of Bangladesh and India after Bangladesh’s star pacer Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the direction of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), sparking outrage in Dhaka.

Later, the BCB requested the ICC to shift its matches outside India, but the international cricket body rejected the plea.

Following the BCB’s firm stance, the ICC replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in the tournament, saying it was not feasible to change the schedule so close to the February 7 start of the event.

The PCB, however, reacted strongly to the ICC’s decision and instead decided to boycott its India match over bias against Bangladesh.

Any clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is one of the most lucrative fixtures in cricket, worth millions of dollars in broadcast, sponsorship and advertising revenue.

In commercial terms, the overall value of a single India-Pakistan T20 match is estimated at around $500 million, or approximately INR45,000 crore, when broadcast rights, advertising premiums, sponsorship activations, ticket sales and downstream commercial activity are taken into account.

According to a report, advertising slots during an India-Pakistan T20 match command between INR25 lakh and INR40 lakh for a 10-second spot, significantly higher than even knockout matches involving India against other top teams.

The most immediate financial impact would be felt by the official broadcast rights holder, as advertising revenue from the India-Pakistan match alone is estimated at around INR300 crore, the Indian publication cited industry projections as suggesting.

Filmmaker, musician allege breach of agreement; demand their music be removed from it

Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead musician Jonny Greenwood have formally asked for music from Phantom Thread to be removed from the controversial Melania documentary, arguing that its inclusion breaches a composer agreement. The request has added another layer of scrutiny to a film that has already attracted intense attention for its subject matter and unusually high budget.

In a statement released through Greenwood’s representative, Anderson and Greenwood said they became aware that a piece of music from the 2017 film Phantom Thread had been used in the Melania documentary without proper consultation. Greenwood composed the acclaimed score for Phantom Thread, which was directed by Anderson and widely praised for its emotional restraint and atmospheric tension.

According to the statement, while Greenwood does not personally own the copyright to the Phantom Thread score, the studio failed to consult him about the third party use of the music. The pair described this omission as a breach of Greenwood’s composer agreement, prompting them to request that the music be removed from the documentary altogether. Their intervention places renewed focus on how film scores are licensed and reused, particularly in high profile political or biographical projects.

The Melania documentary, directed by Brett Ratner, presents itself as an intimate portrait of First Lady Melania Trump. Despite strong box office numbers for a documentary, with more than $13 million earned domestically after two weekends, the film has been criticised for offering limited insight. Industry observers have also been struck by its staggering cost, with Amazon MGM reportedly spending $40 million to acquire the film and an accompanying streaming series, followed by a further $35 million on theatrical marketing.

These figures are virtually unheard of in the documentary space, where profitability is rarely driven by cinema releases. The heavy investment has led to speculation about Amazon MGM’s motivations, particularly given the political climate surrounding the film’s release. The studio has already taken the unusual step of issuing public statements to contextualise the movie’s box office performance.

Greenwood’s film composing career has spanned more than two decades and includes frequent collaborations with Anderson on titles such as There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice and Liquorice Pizza. His Phantom Thread score was singled out at the time for its haunting elegance and emotional precision, making its unauthorised use especially sensitive.

Discussion spread across film focused forums and social media, with many users debating the ethics of repurposing iconic film music in politically charged documentaries. Others questioned whether studios adequately protect composers when their work is reused beyond its original context. As of now, Amazon MGM has not publicly responded to the request to remove the music, leaving the dispute unresolved.

As a child, Melania participated in fashion shows that featured children’s clothing. Textiles were Sevnica’s primary industry. Students were excused from school to participate in the shows. From a young age, Melanija expressed an interest in fashion, and she began customizing and sewing her own clothes. She developed a skill for it by watching her mother work. Melanija did well in school, where she was appointed school treasurer.

Trump has said that she can speak English, Italian, French, and German in addition to her native Slovene, but in public she has fluently spoken only English and Slovene.

Legendary guitarist, composer played pivotal role in shaping modern popular music in West Africa

ACCRA, GHANA:

Tributes have been pouring in from across Ghana and the world since the death of Ghanaian highlife legend Ebo Taylor.

A guitarist, composer and bandleader who died on Saturday, Taylor’s six-decade career played a key role in shaping modern popular music in West Africa.

Often described as one of the founding fathers of contemporary highlife, Taylor died a day after the launch of a music festival bearing his name in the capital, Accra, and just a month after celebrating his 90th birthday.

Highlife, a genre blending traditional African rhythms with jazz and Caribbean influences, was recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

“The world has lost a giant. A colossus of African music,” a statement shared on his official page said. “Your light will never fade.”

The Los Angeles-based collective Jazz Is Dead called him a pioneer of highlife and Afrobeat, while Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy and American producer Adrian Younge, who has worked with Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar, also paid tribute to his legacy.

Nigerian writer and poet Dami Ajayi described him as a “highlife maestro” and a “fantastic guitarist”.

– ‘Uncle Ebo’ –

Taylor’s influence extended far beyond Ghana, with elements of his music appearing in the soul, jazz, hip-hop and Afrobeat genres that dominate the African and global charts today.

Born Deroy Taylor in Cape Coast in 1936, he began performing in the 1950s, as highlife was establishing itself as the dominant sound in Ghana in the years following independence.

Known for intricate guitar lines and rich horn arrangements, he played with leading bands including the Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band.

In the early 1960s, he travelled to London to study music, where he worked alongside other African musicians, including Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

The exchange of ideas between the two would later be seen as formative to the development of Afrobeat, a political cocktail blending highlife with funk, jazz and soul.

Back in Ghana, Taylor became one of the country’s most sought-after arrangers and producers, working with stars such as Pat Thomas and CK Mann while leading his own bands.

His compositions — including “Love & Death”, “Heaven”, “Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara” and “Appia Kwa Bridge” — gained renewed international attention decades later as DJs, collectors and record labels reissued his music. His grooves were sampled by hip-hop and R&B artists and helped introduce new global audiences to Ghanaian highlife.

Taylor continued touring into his 70s and 80s, performing across Europe and the United States as part of a late-career renaissance that cemented his status as a cult figure among younger musicians.

Bad Bunny celebrates Puerto Rico at Super Bowl, angers Trump | The Express Tribune

US president slams singer’s performance, calls it ‘an affront to the Greatness of America’

SANTA CLARA/
USA:

Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny on Sunday turned the Super Bowl into a giant street party, emphasizing unity over division in his groundbreaking Spanish-language set — but still earning President Donald Trump’s scorn.

Anticipation was high for the 31-year-old’s set, amid rampant speculation about whether he would use his platform to renew his criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in front of tens of millions of viewers.

But the wildly popular musician, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, instead made good on his pre-game promise to joyously share his culture — and largely avoided overt political statements in favor of subtle messaging through symbols.

In a set featuring a sugar cane plantation, a traditional “piragua” cart selling treats, and even a wedding, he opened with “Titi Me Pregunto” and feminist anthem “Yo Perreo Sola,” with a cast of dancers fueling the party atmosphere.

Actors Pedro Pascal and Jessica Alba, and rapper Cardi B were among the guest stars vibing in his familiar “La Casita” backdrop, representing a home in Puerto Rico. Bad Bunny wore an all-white ensemble, with a football jersey featuring the number “64” and “Ocasio,” before donning a classy suit jacket.

He delved into more political territory with “El Apagon” (Blackout), which touches on the displacement of Puerto Ricans on their own island, and the constant problems caused by the unreliable power grid. He carried a Puerto Rican flag at one point.

The performance also included a young boy watching the Grammys on an old television set. Bad Bunny, who won the Album of the Year prize a week ago, presented the child — perhaps a younger version of himself — with a golden gramophone.

The internet went wild with unverified rumors that the child was Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old Ecuadoran boy recently detained by US immigration agents in Minnesota.

An NFL spokesman confirmed to AFP that the boy was an actor, and an Instagram post seemingly from the child in question, Lincoln Fox, was hashtagged #youngbadbunny.

Surprise musical guests included Lady Gaga, who sang a Latin-inflected version of her hit “Die with a Smile” — the only English lyrics in the show — and Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin.

‘Affront’

At the Grammys, Bad Bunny made a searing statement about Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown, earning cheers for saying “ICE out” from the stage.

But on Sunday, he did not call out the Republican president.

At the end of the set, after listing Latin American countries, Puerto Rico, the United States and Canada, Bad Bunny spiked a football that said “Together, we are America.”

A giant screen in the stadium read: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”

Trump nevertheless quickly took issue with the performance, saying: “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying” — even though government data shows more than 41 million Americans speak Spanish.

Posting on his Truth Social account, he called the show “an affront to the Greatness of America.”

Early backlash

Bad Bunny has been Spotify’s most-streamed artist in the world four separate times, including last year, and won Album of the Year at the Grammys with “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” — the first Spanish-language work to win music’s highest accolade.

But the decision to showcase his work at the Super Bowl in California was met with conservative outrage — specifically about the idea that he would not sing in English.

The NFL entered into an agreement in 2019 with Jay-Z’s entertainment company Roc Nation, which leads the league’s entertainment strategy.

Since that time, the list of Super Bowl headliners included Jennifer Lopez and Shakira (with a guest spot for Bad Bunny), but the duo did not perform exclusively in Spanish, leaving Bad Bunny to set that benchmark.

From Vega Baja to Super Bowl

Bad Bunny grew up in Vega Baja, a small municipality near Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan.

He was working at a supermarket bagging groceries when he got a call from a label over his viral plays on the DIY platform SoundCloud.

The Providence Police Department on Monday released body camera footage showing officers’ response to the Dec. 13 mass shooting at Brown University, along with audio recordings from emergency calls and radio traffic from the incident.

Police said portions of the materials were redacted following public records requests to protect the privacy and dignity of victims and witnesses, remove graphic or highly sensitive content, and comply with exemptions under the Access to Public Records Act.

Audio recordings included in the release show that Brown University Police began communicating with Providence emergency dispatch shortly after 4 p.m., as reports of the shooting first emerged.

At approximately 4:11 p.m., a caller said that officers had a suspect description of an individual wearing all black and a ski mask, with an unknown direction of travel.

Anand Mahindra’s Monday Motivation – Dr Shubha V Iyengar

Every Monday, India’s well-known industrialist Anand Mahindra shares a short post on social media that many people look forward to. He calls it Monday Motivation, and his messages range from lessons in life to stories of people doing remarkable work. On one recent Monday, he posted about someone few people outside scientific circles know by name, but whose work affects the lives of millions of air travellers every year. That person is Dr Shubha V Iyengar, an Indian aerospace scientist whose invention helps planes land safely in low visibility conditions. In his post on X, Mr Anand Mahindra said he was “fascinated by Dr Shubha V Iyengar because she literally helps planes land through fog”. He contrasted her real-world impact with the common struggles people face “moving through metaphorical fog” in their own lives. His message quickly caught attention because it was not just about inspiration but about recognising a quiet giant in Indian science whose work keeps aircraft and passengers safe during difficult weather. The tweet drew readers’ curiosity about who Dr Shubha is, how her innovation works, and why her story stood out to a business leader with millions of followers. Her accomplishment is special not only because it was technically difficult, but also because it had a real effect on Indian aviation in some of the most challenging weather conditions for aviation

Dr Shubha V Iyengar: From science student to aviation innovator

Dr Iyengar had a strong background in physics and electronics when she started her journey. She did well in school early on and then went on to get more education in her field. Later, she worked at CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru, which is one of India’s best places to do aerospace research. At NAL, she worked on sensor systems and measuring tools for aviation, especially when the weather was bad. India’s winter fog, monsoon rain and dust storms make certain airports especially difficult environments for aircraft operations. Pilots and air traffic controllers depend on accurate, real-time information on visibility to make landing decisions.During her decades at the lab, Dr Shubha and her team developed an indigenous visibility measuring system, later named Drishti. This system checks the visibility of the runway and gives real-time information about how far ahead pilots can see when they are landing or approaching. Air traffic controllers and pilots get the data right away so they can make changes or land safely.

What Drishti does and why it is important

India used to rely on expensive visibility instruments that weren’t always the best fit for Indian weather conditions before Drishti was put to use. Drishti changed that by being made to meet the needs of Indian runways and weather, and it could even work in thick fog and quickly changing conditions. The system uses two light beams that cross the runway and measures how much light moves between them. The clearer the beam, the easier it is to see. When fog or dust gets in the way of the beams, the readings show that you can’t see as well. This gives pilots and air traffic controllers a clear runway visual range (RVR) number that they can use to make decisions.Drishti’s real-time data lets aviation teams know that the weather is safe for flying. This helps keep flights on time and stops them from being canceled. It helps with planning and keeps things running smoothly when bad weather cancels flights.

Recognition and national impact

Dr Shubha has been recognized nationally for her work, including the Padma Shri, which is one of India’s highest civilian awards. The award praised not only her technical innovation but also how useful it was in a field as important as aviation safety.Mr Anand Mahindra liked her story because it was about more than just her own success. It shows a commitment to fixing a real problem that affects millions of people. The fact that her work literally helps aircraft touch down safely when nature seems most hostile makes her example powerful to people across different walks of life.In this one post, Mr Anand Mahindra introduced many of his followers to a scientist whose contributions quietly underpin everyday life for so many travellers. People talked more about how important it is to support scientific research that helps society in real ways because of the attention her work got.

Inspiration drawn from quiet excellence

Anand Mahindra’s motivation post did not frame Dr Shubha as a celebrity or a headline figure. Instead, he pointed to her focused work, her technical excellence, and her contribution to public safety as reasons for admiration. This is especially true now that fame is more often linked to success than to real change. The message was clear to readers and followers: important contributions don’t always come from loud platforms or public attention. Sometimes, they come from years of careful planning, testing, and making things better. The people who are most affected are the ones whose lives are directly affected, like passengers who land in thick fog or aviation teams that have to make important decisions with confidence. This is true because Dr. Shubha V Iyengar went from being a scientist in a research lab to being a well-known person in India, where she is one of the most followed business leaders. Mr. Mahindra chose her as his Monday Motivation to honor not only new ideas, but also the purpose and effect that change has on people’s lives every week.

Median home prices in the Hamptons hit an all-time high in the fourth quarter, as Wall Street bonuses and tech wealth fueled a new wave of buyers in the New York beach communities, according to brokers.

The median sales price in the Hamptons hit a record $2.34 million in the fourth quarter, up 34% from last year, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The average sale price soared to $3.76 million. The number of homes selling for more than $5 million also hit a record, at 82, according to the report.

“In the past few years we’ve seen a tremendous upswing in wealth in the Hamptons,” said Jonathan Miller, CEO of Miller Samuel.

Wall Street bonuses are a big driver. Bonuses for 2025 were expected to be the highest on record, with the strongest growth since 2021, according to the Office of the New York State Comptroller. Real estate brokers say many hedge funders, private equity chiefs and venture capital investors are also joining traditional Wall Street bankers in the buying spree.

“Wall Street had a really good year, and that’s being reflected directly in Hamptons prices,” Miller said.

While prices for existing homes are rising, most of the gains for median prices are coming from a board shift in the sales mix.

Sales of homes in the lower and middle segments of the market remain under pressure from high interest rates. The high end, however, is booming with all-cash deals from buyers flush with liquidity after three years of double-digit gains in the stock market.

A greater share of total sales coming from the biggest, most-expensive homes continues to drive up the median.

“It’s not price appreciation, but a shift to the higher-priced home sales,” Miller said.

It’s not likely to slow anytime soon. Inventory remains low, especially for premium, oceanfront homes. Brokers say the summer rental and sales season is already off to a strong start – despite below-freezing temperatures and heavy snow “out East.”

“I’ve already rented most of my high-end stuff for the summer,” said Gary DePersia of Corcoran in East Hampton. “People are looking and renting early this year.”

DePersia said he rented a waterfront Hamptons home from July to Labor Day for close to $1 million. He said wealthy New Yorkers who continue to move to Florida after the pandemic are buying homes in the Hamptons as escapes during the hot Florida summers. He’s also seeing buyers and renters from California, he said.

While there are still many properties left for the summer, both rental and sales, he said those who wait for the usual last-minute discounts in May could be disappointed.

“We’ve got a ton of snow here, but I’m showing a $10 million house in the middle of the week to an interested buyer,” he said. “People want to be here, because in the summer their friends are here, their former and current colleagues, their family. They want a meeting ground and a cool environment.”
