American Olympic skier Hunter Hess 'cannot wait to represent Team USA' after Trump backlash

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

American skier Hunter Hess appeared to backtrack on the “mixed emotions” he said he had about representing the U.S. at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Hess drew backlash from President Donald Trump and others when he made his initial comments to reporters last week. But after a few days, Hess made clear about wearing the red, white and blue on one of the biggest stages in sports.

“I love my country,” he wrote with an American flag emoji. “There is so much that is great about America, but there are always things that could be better.

“One of the many things that makes this country so amazing is that we have the right and the freedom to point that out. The best part of the Olympics is that it brings people together, and when so many of us are divided we need that more than ever. I cannot wait to represent Team USA next week when I compete.”

Hess’ comments came as the Trump administration faced backlash over the use of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in immigration enforcement operations. An incident with ICE agents in January left Renee Good dead in Minnesota. Border Patrol agents also had a deadly encounter with Alex Pretti.

Those incidents were apparently used as the catalyst for the comments from Hess and his teammate Chris Lillis. Hess said he had “mixed emotions” about representing the U.S.

“It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t,” Hess said.

“I think, for me, it’s more I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented it before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S. If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.

More Argentina beef imports won’t do much to ease costs for consumers, according to experts

More Argentina beef imports won't do much to ease costs for consumers, according to experts

President Trump’s move to boost U.S. imports of beef from Argentina to help ease costs for consumers may have less impact than the White House is hoping for, experts said.

The executive order, which Mr. Trump signed on Friday amid a new trade deal between the two countries, allows Argentina to export an additional 80,000 metric tons of beef to the U.S. tariff-free this year, according to the Trump administration. The directive applies to imports of lean beef trimmings, which are used to produce ground beef.

“As President of the United States, I have a responsibility to ensure that hardworking Americans can afford to feed themselves and their families,” Mr. Trump said in the order.

But David Ortega, a food economist and professor at Michigan State University, told CBS News that 80,000 tons of beef represents only 0.6% of the overall U.S. beef supply — too little to move the needle on prices, he said.

“We’re talking about less than 1% of supply,” Ortega said. “And so I wouldn’t expect this to have much of an impact on these prices. Now, it doesn’t hurt, but we’re not talking about any major quantities that we are importing that would immediately suppress prices.”

The U.S. produced nearly 27 million pounds of beef in 2024, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shared on Statista.

What drove up beef prices

Average ground beef prices around the U.S. reached $6.69 a pound in December, up 19% from a year ago, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Five years ago, consumers could buy a pound of ground beef for $3.95.

The biggest factor behind the jump in beef prices: Extreme weather conditions that have shrunk the nation’s cattle supply. Droughts, including a recent bout of dry weather in 2022 that affected beef-producing states, have made it harder for farmers to grow crops needed for feedstock and forced many cattle ranchers to sell off their beef cows. Wildfires have also ravaged grasslands used to graze cattle, according to the White House.

By contrast, the cost of chicken and eggs, which spiked in 2022 amid an avian flu outbreak that required the destruction of millions of birds, has recently dipped, St. Louis Fed figures show.

“While prices for other proteins such as eggs, pork and chicken have declined in recent months, beef prices remain elevated,” a Department of Agriculture spokesperson said in an email. “This is due to the perfect storm of sustained increase in consumer demand for beef, coupled with a prolonged decrease in the supply of live cattle.”

The country’s beef cattle supply stood at 27.6 million on Jan. 1, down 1% from a year ago, according to USDA data. Overall, the total number of cattle in the U.S. is at a 75-year-low.

In a fact sheet last week, the White House acknowledged the supply challenges facing the U.S.

“President Trump is responding to market challenges and ensuring a plentiful ground beef supply for American families at affordable prices by taking action on multiple fronts.”

So what would lower costs?

Derrell Peel, a professor in the department of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University, also expressed skepticism that the executive order will help ease costs for domestic consumers, saying there’s “nothing that the administration can do in the short run to make U.S. beef prices come down.”

That’s because the key to lowering prices will be to rebuild the cattle supply, a process that will likely take several years, Peel explained. Part of that effort will require saving female cows, known as heifers, for breeding, instead of killing them to meet consumer demand for beef, Peel noted.

“We have record-high cattle prices, and we’re going to continue to until we regrow,” he said.

Keke Palmer reveals how motherhood prepared her for ‘The Burbs’ role

Keke Palmer has opened up about postpartum, sharing how motherhood prepared her for the latest role.

Ahead of her upcoming project, The Burbs, the actress told People Magazine about how she channeled her own motherhood journey for the role.

Palmer said, “I definitely did. I mean, I think postpartum is something that we think just happens in the beginning after a mom has a baby, but it’s like a lifelong thing.”

“So, I think going back to that beginning stage of remembering what it was like when my son Leodis was first born and just that protectiveness and how it became something that made every bit of danger become that much more fearful and that much more large,” she added.

The actress, who shares son Leodis with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, went on to add, “And I think the reality for [my character] Samira is that the danger is real, but where it’s placed and how to engage with it is the part that becomes difficult, especially after becoming a new mom.”

“But I definitely related it to just that protectiveness,” she noted.

It is pertinent to mention that Keke Palmer also revealed on Today recently that playing a mother in The Burbs “gave me so much more than I knew it would.”

“I guess I should have expected it. After you have kids, it really does expand your heart in a way you can’t imagine until it happens. And so, I definitely put that into the character Samira for sure,” she added.

US to relinquish senior NATO posts to Britain, Italy

  • Italy to take charge of NATO’s Naples command.
  • Britain set to lead NATO’s Norfolk command.
  • US to assume control of NATO’s maritime forces.

BRUSSELS: The United States will hand over two top regional commands in NATO to European countries, diplomats said on Monday, as President Donald Trump presses allies to take greater responsibility for their defence.

Washington will transfer leadership of NATO’s Naples command, which focuses on the alliance’s south, to Italy and leadership of its Norfolk command in Virginia, focusing on the alliance’s north, to Britain, two diplomats at NATO said.

The United States will meanwhile take over the command of NATO’s maritime forces, based in the United Kingdom, the diplomats said.

“Allies have agreed on a new distribution of senior officer responsibility across the NATO Command Structure in which European Allies, including NATO’s newest members, will play a more prominent role in the Alliance’s military leadership,” a NATO official said, without detailing the changes.

“The decision relates to planning for future rotations.”

The changes, first reported by French outlet La Lettre, will likely take months to be implemented, the NATO diplomats told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“It’s a good sign of burden shifting in practice,” one of the diplomats said.

The shuffling of NATO command positions comes as Washington has said it could reduce its defence presence in Europe to focus on other threats such as China.

But military superpower Washington will still remain central as it will have control of NATO’s core air, land and sea commands and retain the top position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

European countries have already ramped up military budgets in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and last year agreed to hike NATO’s defence spending target.

Trump has rattled faith in the reliability of the United States and last month plunged the alliance into crisis by making claims on Greenland.

But US NATO ambassador Matthew Whitaker separately on Monday insisted that the US leader was looking to strengthen, rather than “dismantle”, NATO by making Europe step up.

“We’re trying to make NATO stronger, not to withdraw or reject NATO, but make it work like it was intended as an alliance of 32 strong and capable allies,” Whitaker said.

What neurodivergence can teach us about the different ways of experiencing joy

What neurodivergence can teach us about the different ways of experiencing joy

When people talk about autism, they often think about a child who is different and may be distressed by their surroundings. Or if the conversation moves beyond childhood, the focus might be about an autistic adult with analytical superpowers, such as The Good Doctor or Patience, who still has difficulty with their surroundings and fitting in with colleagues.

People rarely mention autistic joy. However, a 2024 study found that most autistic people often experience joy, with one participant in that study noting: “Lining things up is fun because it’s pleasurable. It’s odd that [non-autistic people] don’t understand it. Sorting/organising is one of the deepest pleasures in life, as intense/as sought after as delicious food.”

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference. Autistic people are often, incorrectly, viewed as lacking in empathy. This may be because autistic people often have more muted facial expressions.

Autistic people like myself may also struggle to recognise our own emotions, a concept known as alexithymia. However, this doesn’t mean that we don’t feel intense joy.

It is often claimed that autistic people lack emotions. However, autistic people can feel emotions intensely, including for other people, animals and even inanimate objects. This can be linked to high rates of involvement in social justice work.

Sensory processes

The majority of autistic people have sensory processing differences, compared to non-autistic people. This includes finding many of the spaces of modern living painfully loud, bright and overly populated.

This can be intensely overwhelming and distressing, especially when it is not in the person’s control to alter the environment. These sensory challenges are well documented. For autistic people who are hyper-sensitive to the sensory world around them, this can increase anxiety.

Also, one of the diagnostic criteria for autism is doing the same thing over and over, referred to as “repetitive behaviours”. One form of this is what autistic people call stimming.

When stimming, an autistic person is creating joyous sensory input for themselves. This can be moving their body or hands in a particular way, touching something soothing, using their voice or consuming the same audio or video content over and over again.

Each autistic person will have their own unique stims, which are both joy inducing and reassuring.

Stimming is vital for autistic people’s mental wellbeing, but all too often autistic children are encouraged to stop and many autistic adults feel too self-conscious to stim openly.

However, some autistic advocates are now showing their joyful stimming on social media, to try to reduce the stigma.

Communication

Autistic people use clear and direct communication, and typically understand other people’s language literally. This can make understanding non-autistic communication confusing, and can lead to bullying and exclusion by non-autistic peers.

However, when autistic people speak to each other, these misunderstandings disappear. But more than that, autistic people can find delight in “info dumping”.

Info dumping is the process of sharing, often a large amount of, information about a topic they really like. It is usually reserved for a person they feel safe with.

Unlike a neurotypical chat, info dumping often doesn’t look like a conversation. It may involve long monologues, accompanied by a response that is not particularly on topic, where the second person also “info dumps”. It has been described as a neurodivergent love language.

Unsurprisingly, autistic people may form strong attachments to a single best friend or close group of friends, with autistic boys in particular having a different friendship pattern to non-autistic people.

Hyperfocus

Autistic people are more likely than non-autistic people to hyperfocus on things. This is known as monotropism, where the brain is thinking in depth about one thing at a time. By comparison, non-monotropic people may think about several things at the same time, but achieve less depth of thought.

It can be really enjoyable being in a state of hyperfocus, or a “flow state”, for both autistic and non-autistic people. However, it can also lead to overwork and work-family conflict.

What does it all mean?

You may be wondering, how is autistic joy different from other neurotypical forms of happiness? The straight answer is we don’t currently know, as the research hasn’t been done yet. Although I suspect that autistic people get increased joy from sensory activities that they enjoy compared to non-autistic people.

Drawing on my own experience as an autistic person, I get enormous joy from looking at trees. Seeing particular trees gives me the warm feeling I get when I see a friend. It may be that for me, seeing trees gives me a dose of oxytocin. This may also be true for autistic people in general when they encounter objects that they have a strong positive attachment to, although it hasn’t been tested yet.

When thinking about autism, and autistic people, it is important to not only focus on the difficulties. Autistic people have a great capacity for joy, but need spaces that feel safe enough to be their authentic, joyful selves.

Ring's AI Search Party helps find lost dogs faster

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Losing a dog can make your stomach drop and your thoughts race. First, you check the yard. Then you walk the block. After that, you refresh local Facebook groups again and again, hoping for a sign.

Now, Ring wants to turn your entire neighborhood into extra eyes with help from AI. Its Search Party feature uses nearby cameras to spot lost dogs, and it is now available nationwide to anyone who needs help finding a missing pet. For the first time, you do not need to own a Ring camera to use it.

10 SMART DEVICES THAT MAKE PET PARENTING EASIER

Ring says its Search Party tool has helped reunite more than one lost dog per day across the U.S. (Evelyn Hockstein/For The Washington Post via Getty Images)

What is Ring’s Search Party feature?

Search Party is a community-powered tool that helps reunite lost dogs with their families faster. When someone reports a missing dog in the Ring app, nearby outdoor Ring cameras scan recent footage using AI. The goal stays simple. Find dogs that look like the one reported missing. If a possible match shows up, the camera owner receives an alert with a photo of the lost dog and a video clip. From there, they can ignore the alert or step in to help. As a result, sharing always stays optional, and pressure stays off.

How Search Party actually works

Here is what happens once a lost dog post goes live.

  • First, a pet owner posts a lost dog alert in the Ring app
  • Next, nearby outdoor Ring cameras scan footage using AI
  • Then, camera owners receive alerts if a match appears
  • After that, neighbors can share video clips or snapshots
  • Finally, messages and calls stay private with no phone numbers shared

Search Party now works without a Ring camera

This update changes everything. Previously, only people with Ring devices could use Search Party. Now, anyone in the U.S. can download the free Ring Neighbors app, register and post a lost dog alert. Because of that shift, dog owners can tap into an existing camera network without buying hardware or paying for a subscription. At the same time, neighbors without cameras can still help by spreading alerts and watching for sightings.

Lost pets already represent one of the most common post types in the Ring Neighbors app, with more than 1 million lost or found pet reports shared last year alone. With an estimated 60 million U.S. households owning at least one dog, the potential reach of Search Party is massive.

How to start a Search Party for your dog

Getting started is pretty straightforward.  Download the Ring app for free in the App Store or Google Play if you don’t already have it. Anyone can create a Lost Dog Post in the Ring app.

If the post qualifies, the app walks you through activating Search Party step by step. You share photos and basic details about your dog. Once active, nearby cameras begin scanning automatically.

Search Party alerts are temporary. When you start a Search Party in the Ring app, it runs for a few hours at a time. If your dog has not been found and remains missing, you need to renew the Search Party or start a new one so nearby cameras continue scanning for matches.

When you find your dog, you can update the post to let the neighborhood know the search is over.

AI TECHNOLOGY HELPS REUNITE LOST DOGS WITH THEIR OWNERS

What happens when a Ring camera spots your lost dog

If your outdoor Ring camera spots a possible match, you stay in control the entire time. You receive an alert with a photo of the missing dog and a clip from your camera. From there, you decide what happens next. You can ignore the alert or help by sharing footage or contacting the owner through the app. Throughout the process, your phone number stays private.

Ring says Search Party has already delivered dramatic results. In one case, Kylee from Wichita, Kansas, was reunited with her mixed-breed dog, Nyx, in just 15 minutes after he slipped through a small hole under a backyard fence. A neighbor’s Ring camera captured video of Nyx and shared it through the app, giving Kylee her first and only lead. “I was blown away,” Kylee said, noting that even dogs with microchips often go unrecognized if they lack a collar. She credits that shared video for bringing Nyx home so quickly, adding that she does not think she would have found him without the Ring app.

Nyx is far from the only success story. Ring says Search Party has helped reunite more than one lost dog per day, including dogs like Xochitl in Houston, Truffle in Bakersfield, Lainey in Surprise, Zola in Ellenwood, Toby in Las Vegas, Blu in Erlanger, Zeus in Chicago and Coco in Stockton, with more reunions happening every day.

How to turn Ring’s Search Party on or off

Search Party remains optional and adjustable. You can enable or disable it at any time inside the Ring app.

  • Start by opening the Ring app and heading to the main dashboard.
  • Then tap the menu icon.
  • Go to Control Center and select Search Party.
  • From there, you can turn Search for Lost Pets on or off for each camera.

Ring commits $1M to help shelters reunite lost dogs

Alongside the expansion, Ring is committing $1 million to equip animal shelters with camera systems. The company aims to support up to 4,000 shelters across the U.S. By bringing shelters into the network, Ring hopes dogs picked up by shelters can reconnect with their owners faster. In addition, the company already works with groups like Petco Love and Best Friends Animal Society and says it remains open to new partnerships.

Ring is also encouraging animal shelters and organizations to reach out directly about collaboration opportunities.

Privacy concerns remain around Ring’s Search Party feature

Search Party launched last fall with some pushback. Critics raised concerns about privacy and Ring’s broader ties to law enforcement. Ring says participation stays voluntary and footage sharing remains optional. Still, the feature turns on by default for compatible outdoor cameras, which has drawn attention. Even so, the company appears confident and is promoting Search Party in a Super Bowl commercial.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Search Party taps into something familiar. Neighbors helping neighbors during a stressful moment. By opening the feature to everyone, Ring removes a major barrier and increases the chances of fast reunions. California jewelry store burglar breaks in from roof, owner threatens to leave Los Angeles

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A California jewelry store owner said his family may leave Los Angeles after 30 years following a roof break-in at their business, the latest in a string of crimes that have left them fearing for their safety.

Fox 11 Los Angeles reported that the burglary occurred around 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Nafiseh Jeweler on Ventura Boulevard.

Surveillance video shows a man entering the store through the roof, then escaping in less than 10 minutes with an estimated $100,000 worth of precious jewels.

“It’s time to go from LA. LA has changed,” co-owner Touraj Nezafati said.

The business was first burglarized six months ago, and the family has since experienced two home invasions after being followed home from the store.

“We’re even scared to go outside from the jewelry store to home,” Nezafati told Fox 11. “We’re always scared. What if we get robbed on the way? What if somebody puts a gun on our head and says, ‘Go back to the store and open the safe?’”

The outlet said the suspect covered the outside cameras and seemed to know exactly how to get in and where to look.

“The person just hammered in. Came inside from the roof, came down, but when you come down, you see an 18-foot drop,” Nezafati explained. “He knew if he jumps down he’s going to break something. So, he crawled to the end of the store where it’s a second floor. We have two stories, and he jumped down from there.”

The suspect did not wear gloves during the burglary or conceal his face.
