Lunar New Year gives luxury brands a chance to win back big spenders in China

Luxury brands from Harry Winston to Loewe are going all in on Lunar New Year collections in a bid to attract Chinese customers.

Ahead of the Year of the Horse, which starts on Tuesday, Harry Winston unveiled a limited-edition, $81,500 rose gold watch with diamond bezels and a red lacquer horse. High-end fashion brand Chloé released a capsule collection, ranging from $250 silk scarves to a $5,300 snakeskin and leather shoulder bag with a horse head and tail linked by a horsebit chain. A slew of other brands, including Loewe, Gucci and Loro Piana, have introduced new bag charms with horse motifs.

The Year of the Horse arrives at a time of cautious optimism for designer brands and could mark the start of a China’s luxury market comeback.

Chinese consumers were once the primary driver for the global luxury sector but have cut back sharply in recent years, weighed down by the country’s slowing economy and depressed housing values.

The Chinese luxury market stood at about 350 billion RMB in 2024, or about $50 billion, according to estimates from Bain. While the consultancy estimates that market contracted by 3% to 5% in 2025, Bain analysts noted that the sector started showing signs of recovery in the second half of 2025 on the back of stronger stock market performance and consumer confidence.

Bernstein senior analyst Luca Solca said he predicts Chinese luxury spending will stabilize, forecasting mid-single-digit percentage growth in 2026. However, the market is still far more competitive than at its peak, he said.

Before the Covid pandemic, Chinese consumers accounted for about one-third of the global luxury goods market, according to Solca. That percentage has since dipped to about 23%, he said.

The luxury market’s fortunes do not solely rest on Lunar New Year, but it is an opportunity for Western brands to show respect for Chinese culture, he said.

The annual holiday is associated with the colors red and gold, which symbolize good luck and fortune in Chinese culture. Each Lunar New Year is represented by one of 12 Chinese zodiac animals. Last year’s animal was the snake.

But Solca said in order to best capture the Chinese luxury consumer, brands need to go beyond the expected motifs.

“The Chinese are no longer in awe of anything that comes from the West,” Solca said. “A perfunctory interpretation of CNY is not going to go far.”

Veronique Yang, who leads BCG’s consumer practice in Greater China, said literal interpretations can come across as lazy or even disrespectful to Chinese consumers. Younger shoppers are also looking for fresher takes, she said.

“Chinese young people, they respect the old Chinese culture, but to be honest, a lot of parts of it they don’t understand, or they want it to be reinterpreted in a modern way,” she said. “It’s important to weave a narrative that connects the heritage with a contemporary vision.”

Lunar New Year collections date back to the early 2010s, as Western brands were eager to tap into the rapidly growing Chinese luxury consumer market, according to Daniel Langer, professor of luxury strategy at Pepperdine University. At the time, newly wealthy Chinese consumers were eager to spend on designer goods, especially when they traveled abroad, he said, as there were few luxury boutiques in China outside major cities like Shanghai and Beijing.

Now, with broader access and more choice, brands have to work harder to bring in new clients.

And in the 12 years since the last Year of the Horse, Chinese high-income consumers have become more discerning, Langer said.

“They’ve been to the best places in the world. They’ve dined in the best restaurants in the world. They’ve shopped in the best shops in the world. Their expectations towards brands are significantly higher,” he said. “China has completely changed from a country where there was pent up demand for luxury goods to a country of the highest sophistication.”

They also have grown accustomed to spending less on Western brands between pandemic travel restrictions and the rise of domestic high-end labels, according to Langer.

Before the pandemic, Chinese consumers did most of their luxury shopping abroad. Pandemic travel restrictions permanently changed that dynamic. According to Bain, two-thirds of Chinese luxury goods spending was done abroad in 2019. Last year, overseas spending made up only a third.

The Year of the Horse provides a natural opportunity for a sizable number of Western brands to connect to the holiday. Langer said he preferred brands who take a less literal approach, such as Loewe, which adorned its signature Puzzle bags with fringes and tassels for a cowboy aesthetic.

Yang noted, however, that the year’s zodiac animal is a good luck symbol only for people who were born in that year, which makes playing too much into horse imagery a risk.

Instead, she said, brands can use immersive experiences to connect to Chinese customers, especially younger ones, in a more authentic way.

Valentino, for instance, held a three-day lantern festival in January at Tianhou Palace, a historic temple along the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai. Burberry launched an extensive Lunar New Year campaign in mid-December, with Chinese brand ambassadors and a pop-up boutique and ice rink in Beijing.

“There’s a lot of different cultural elements that you can integrate and build a narrative around,” Yang said. “It’s not only about animals.”

Ted Bundy’s cousin recalls the chilling moment that exposed the monster within

Edna Martin was driving her cousin through Seattle in late 1975 when she stepped out to run an errand, leaving him sitting in the car. When she returned, he was no longer inside. A crowd had gathered around him. With his arms outstretched, he spun in place, looked up at the sky and declared, “I’m Ted Bundy.

The law school student had been arrested a few months earlier in Utah and released on bail. By then, investigators were starting to connect him to a string of abductions and murders. Bundy bore an eerie resemblance to the suspect they had been looking for. The family refused to believe he was their guy.

Martin covered his mouth with her hand and rushed him back into the vehicle. They drove in silence. After a few minutes, she glanced over at him. He was smiling.

Martin’s heart sank. At that moment, she realized the accusations were true. Quietly, she panicked, wondering if she would need to crash the car if he suddenly lunged at her. When they arrived at his house, he stayed silent, calmly stepped out of the car and walked inside. Martin collapsed on her steering wheel and told herself, “He did it.”

“My parents, my brother — we were just saying, ‘This can’t be. It has to be some kind of mistake. They caught the wrong guy,’” Martin, now 74, told Fox News Digital. “Maybe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The Washington state insurance broker admitted that her family didn’t want to believe Bundy — once the gentle child who loved fishing and swimming — could commit such horrific acts that would later shock the nation. Again and again, they told each other, “This can’t be.”

“The number one thing I wanted to do was meet up with Ted and hear it from him,” she said. “The Ted I thought I knew was not the Ted who was with me. It was a different person. I went from feeling comfortable to feeling horrified.”

Martin is sharing her story in Oxygen’s new true crime documentary, “Love, Ted Bundy.” The film explores how one of America’s most notorious serial killers formed a close bond with his cousin as a child — a relationship that unraveled into what she calls “an evil person” who haunted her for more than five decades. It also highlights the letters Bundy sent her while he was on death row.

Bundy killed at least 30 women across several states during the 1970s. For Martin, that number is staggering because each victim was someone’s daughter, sister or friend.

“I knew one side of Ted,” Martin said. “He was the guy I hung out with. When I moved back to Washington to finish my junior and senior years at the University of Washington, he lived about five or six minutes away. My parents were happy he was nearby — they thought he could look out for me if I needed anything. I looked up to him as a big-brother figure and someone I could trust, someone I could introduce to my girlfriends.”

“We looked just like the girls he started murdering,” said Martin.

According to Martin, Bundy was five years older than she was. When his family moved to Washington, they lived under the same roof as hers for about a year.

“His mom had him out of wedlock,” Martin explained. “In the mid-1940s, that was a harsh label to live with. People were hard on unwed mothers back then, and my parents wanted to give Louise, his mom, a second chance. So he was part of our family from the very beginning.”

“He was always very nice to me,” she said. “He always took time to talk to me. He seemed normal — outgoing — and my parents loved him.”

Looking back, Martin said she witnessed moments of Bundy’s strange behavior that startled her — “as if he transformed in front of me.” Around her friends, his jaw would suddenly clench, and he looked “mean.” His bright blue eyes would turn black. When Martin called out to him, he’d shake his head and smile, as if nothing had happened.

For years, Martin wondered what had gone wrong with Bundy.

“I’ve often speculated about this, and maybe it was because of the times, but his mom would never tell him who his biological father was,” she explained. “It became more and more of an urgency for him to know who he was. I don’t know if it’s because he was detecting things about himself or if he was just needing to know what that connection was on that side of the family.”

“In 1969, he came through to see us on the way to Philadelphia so he could try to research and find out who his dad was,” Martin continued. “I think that had a big effect on him. He never found out, and his mother withheld that information. Maybe she thought she was protecting him, but maybe it had another effect on him.”

Still, Martin emphasized that whatever struggles Bundy faced could never justify the lives he destroyed.

From 1972 to 1974, female college students, like Martin, began to disappear, The Seattle Times reported. It frightened her and many others. Four of the missing women were from the same university district where she lived. Lynda Ann Healy, Bundy’s first known victim, vanished in 1974 and was reported to be one of her roommate’s best friends.

Martin stressed she never once believed that Bundy could have a dark side. The documentary shows how she introduced him to her friends, and he charmed them with his cheerful personality. When witnesses described a light-colored Volkswagen Beetle driven by a man calling himself “Ted,” he laughed it off as a case of mistaken identity.

Martin believed him.

“I remember when I was in Alaska and got a phone call that he’d been arrested,” Martin said. “I just ran [until] I finally felt safe enough to scream it out of my system — because how could that be? Everything I thought I knew about someone was wrong. What it does — and you have to really fight this — is shake your ability to trust anyone. Now, when I look at people, I always wonder what’s behind the façade.”

On Dec. 30, 1977, Bundy was being held at the Garfield County Jail in Colorado. He called Martin’s brother and asked which states had the toughest death-penalty laws. His cousin replied, “Most likely Texas or Florida.”

In January 1978, the FBI arrived at Martin’s house. Bundy had escaped. According to the documentary, she wondered if he had “a death wish.” Martin said she’ll never know the answer.

“He may have been drawn to the challenge of being somewhere that carried so much danger,” she told Fox News Digital. “Maybe it was a place where getting caught could mean execution. You can’t help but wonder.”

On Jan. 15, 1978, Bundy carried out a gruesome attack in Tallahassee, Florida, killing two Chi Omega sorority sisters and injuring three other women, The Associated Press reported. Less than a month later, he abducted, sexually assaulted and killed a 12-year-old girl named Kimberly Leach in Lake City, Florida, the outlet reported. She was Bundy’s final victim.

Martin said she wrote to Bundy repeatedly, hoping to understand what had driven him to kill. In her letters, she asked if there were other victims who’d never been identified and urged him to reveal where unrecovered remains might be. Bundy wrote back, but he did not provide her with any answers.

Craft beer brewer BrewDog could be broken up as sale process begins

Beermaker BrewDog could be broken up after consultants were called in to help look for new investors.

The Scotland-based brewer, which makes craft beer such as Punk IPA and Elvis Juice, has appointed consultants AlixPartners to oversee a sale process.

Last month, BrewDog announced it was closing its distilling brands, sparking concerns for jobs at its facility in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

The company, which was founded in 2007, said it made the decision to focus on its beer products.

No decision has been made in respect of the sale process.

A spokesperson for BrewDog said: “As with many businesses operating in a challenging economic climate and facing sustained macro headwinds, we regularly review our options with a focus on the long-term strength and sustainability of the company.

“Following a year of decisive action in 2025, which saw a focus on costs and operating efficiencies, we have appointed AlixPartners to support a structured and competitive process to evaluate the next phase of investment for the business.

“This is a deliberate and disciplined step with a focus on strengthening the long-term future of the BrewDog brand and its operations.

“BrewDog remains a global pioneer in craft beer: a world-class consumer brand, the number one independent brewer in the UK and with a highly engaged global community.

“We believe that this combination will attract substantial interest, though no final decisions have been made.

“Our breweries, bars, and venues continue to operate as normal. We will not comment on any further speculation.”

Brewdog operates 72 bars around the world as well as four breweries.

Tyler Perry reveals why he flew to US from Italy in pain for surgery

Tyler Perry is revealing why he regretted going to the hospital in Italy.

Perry appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show and recalled going to a hospital in the picturesque country while filming the third installment of his Why Did I Get Married? film series, titled Why Did I Get Married Again?.

The filmmaker had gone on a bike ride and ended up falling and breaking his shoulder bone.

“I went for a bike ride in Elba and flipped over the handle bars, broke my collarbone, had to have surgery,” Perry recalled. “It was terrible.”

When the host asked whether he had surgery there, Perry replied, “Worst mistake in my life. If you’re ever in Italy — God, I love my Italian people, but don’t go to the hospital there.”

He detailed how a staff member tried to put on a clavicle brace to stabilize his injury without giving him any pain medication.

“This guy, he looks at me, he says, ‘I can fix. I can fix,'” Perry recalled. “And he puts the strap on me, pulls… I screamed so loud, man, I think I woke up everybody in the whole country. It was awful.”

“I didn’t know it was broken and it separated in two places and he was trying to pull it together with no pain meds. Nothing! So I got drunk as hell, got on the plane, and came back to America and had surgery.”

Good news for adventure riders: Mahindra’s new Scorpio N pickup truck coming in 2027 with rugged look, updated design

Mahindra Scorpio N pickup truck: Mahindra is planning to expand its SUV line-up with an all-new pickup truck based on the Scorpio N platform, and it is scheduled to make its global debut in 2027. The announcement has generated excitement among pickup enthusiasts who have been eagerly awaiting details about the vehicle’s design, capabilities, and launch timeline.

The new pickup truck comes from the Global Pik Up concept, which Mahindra first unveiled in 2023. It was showcased as a rugged lifestyle pickup intended to appeal to buyers seeking a blend of utility and comfort. Mahindra has now confirmed that the production version, inspired by this concept, will arrive in 2027.

This upcoming pickup is seen as the most significant upgrade to Mahindra’s pickup lineup in over two decades. Experts believe it will help the company compete more strongly in segments currently dominated by global rivals such as Toyota’s Hilux and the Isuzu V-Cross.

Expected features and design

Spy images of the Scorpio N pickup reveal that it will closely resemble the Scorpio N SUV in design, borrowing the bold front fascia, muscular wheel arches, and a practical cargo bed. Unlike the SUV, the pickup version is expected to feature a dual-cab layout, which will make it suitable for both work and family use.

Inside, the pickup is expected to offer a cabin similar to the Scorpio N, but with new touches. Early leaks suggest a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which would offer wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other likely additions include a semi-digital instrument cluster, comfortable seats, and modern connectivity options.

(Also Read: India’s cheapest CNG car with 34+ km mileage: Price will blow your mind; Check engine, features, safety and more)

Engine and performance

While Mahindra has not officially confirmed the final powertrain lineup, the pickup will likely share engines with the Scorpio N SUV. These could include Mahindra’s 2.2-litre diesel unit and possibly a petrol option for select markets. Transmission choices are expected to include both manual and automatic gearboxes, paired with 4WD capabilities for off-road performance.

What this mean for buyers?

The Scorpio N pickup will target customers who want a versatile vehicle that blends utility, comfort, and modern technology–a segment that has been gaining popularity worldwide. Its combination of rugged design and SUV-like features could make it a strong competitor in the Indian pickup market when it launches in 2027.

Cheating claims, curse words fly in Olympic curling controversy

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — The often-sedate world of curling has gotten heated at the Winter Olympics as cheating allegations and audible curse words overshadowed a feisty match between two of the best men’s teams.

Canada’s Marc Kennedy got offended when he was accused by Swedish rival Oskar Eriksson of “double-touching” — essentially, touching the rock again after initially releasing it down the sheet of ice — during Canada’s 8-6 win in round-robin play Friday.

Kennedy repeatedly used expletives to deny he broke any rules. The match came to a brief standstill as fingers were pointed and Kennedy argued with members of the Swedish team across the ice.

“I don’t like being accused of cheating after 25 years on tour and four Olympic Games,” said Kennedy, 44.

“So,” he added, “I told him where to stick it. Because we’re the wrong team to do that to.”

Eriksson said he simply wanted everyone to “play by the same rules.”

“We want a game that is as sportsmanlike, honest and clean as possible,” he said, “so we call it out as soon as I see that the Canadian No. 2 is, in my eyes, there poking the stone.”

The rules state that a stone must be delivered using the handle that sits on top of the rock and that it must be released from the hand before it reaches the hog line. At the Olympics, that is the thick green line at each end.

Replays appeared to show Kennedy releasing the stone using the handle then touching it again with an outstretched finger as it approached the hog line.

In the early ends of the match, Sweden notified the officials of their complaints. An official then remained at the hog line to monitor Canada’s curlers, and no action was taken. Curling does not use video replays.

World Curling did not take any action against either team.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., alleged at the Munich Security Conference on Friday that U.S. aid to the Jewish state enabled a genocide by Israel. AOC’s attack on the Jewish state in Munich unfolded in the birthplace of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi movement that carried out the worst genocide in human history.

AOC’s assault on Israel’s war campaign to defeat the U.S. and EU-designated terrorist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip sparked outrage and intense criticism from academic military and Middle East experts.

During the town hall event in Munich, the Squad member said, “To me, this isn’t just about a presidential election. Personally, I think that the United States has an obligation to uphold its own laws, particularly the Leahy laws. And I think that personally, that the idea of completely unconditional aid, no matter what one does, does not make sense. I think it enabled a genocide in Gaza. And I think that we have thousands of women and children dead that don’t, that was completely avoidable.”

She continued, “And, so I believe that enforcement of our own laws through the Leahy laws, which requires conditioning aid in any circumstance, when you see gross human rights violations, is appropriate.”

The Leahy Laws prohibit the Department of Defense and the State Department from funding “foreign security force units when there is credible information that the unit has committed a ‘gross violation of human rights.” Former Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT., introduced the bill in 1997.

Tom Gross, an expert on international affairs, told Fox News digital that “AOC has flown all the way to Munich — infamous as the city in which Hitler staged his Nazi Beer Hall Putsch that marked the beginning of the road to the Holocaust — in order to smear the Jewish people further with a phony genocide allegation.”

Gross added, “Such preposterous allegations of ‘genocide’ form the bedrock of modern antisemitic incitement against Jews in the U.S. and globally. This shocking ignorance and insensitivity by Ocasio-Cortez should rule her out of any potential presidential bid or other high office.”

RASHIDA TLAIB HIT WITH HOUSE CENSURE THREAT, ACCUSED OF ‘CELEBRATING TERRORISM’ IN PRO-PALESTINIAN SPEECH

Military experts and genocide researchers have debunked the allegation that Israel carried out a genocide against Palestinians during its self-defense war against the Hamas terrorist organization that started after Hamas terrorists attacked communities in parts of southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 that saw over 1200 Israeli and foreign nationals killed and 251 brutally kidnapped and taken into Gaza by Hamas and other terrorists.

Danny Orbach, a military historian from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and co-author of “Debunking the Genocide Allegations: A Reexamination of the Israel-Hamas War from October 7 2023, to June 1, 2025,” told Fox News Digital that Ocasio-Cortez accusation that Israel committed genocide is an “accusation that is incorrect both factually and legally. Under the Genocide Convention, genocide requires proof of a special intent to destroy a protected group, in whole or in part, and as a baseline condition, an active effort to maximize civilian destruction.

“The evidence shows the opposite: as demonstrated in our multi-author study Debunking the Genocide Allegations, Israel undertook unprecedented measures to mitigate civilian harm, including establishing humanitarian safe zones that independently verified data show were approximately six times safer than other areas of Gaza.”

Orbach added, “Israel also issued detailed advance warnings before strikes and facilitated the entry of over two million tons of humanitarian aid, often at significant cost to its own military advantage, including the loss of surprise and the sustainment of an enemy during wartime.”

He concluded, “These measures were taken despite Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre, its systematic use of human shields and hospitals for military purposes, and a tunnel network exceeding 1,000 kilometers — an operational challenge without historical precedent. Finally, no credible evidence demonstrates the kind of unambiguous, exclusive genocidal intent toward Palestinians that international law requires and that cannot be reasonably interpreted otherwise.”

Olympic medal count: How many gold medals has Team USA won?

While the United States isn’t leading in the medal count, Team USA is looking golden at this year’s Winter Olympic Games.

Team USA has won 16 medals so far and four of them are gold. The American team is in third place for total medals.

Follow along for live coverage

Breezy Johnson won gold in women’s downhill skiing on Sunday, becoming only the second American woman to accomplish the feat. It was the first Olympic medal of her career, and the first gold medal for Team USA at this year’s Winter Games. She tearfully stood at the podium to accept her gold, afterwards saying, “it doesn’t feel real yet.”

Team USA’s second medal came on Sunday after a nail-biting figure skating team event. Ilia Manlin, also known as the “Quad god” stepped onto the ice with the gold medal hinging on his performance. The breakout star delivered, earning Team USA enough points to defeat Japan.

On Wednesday, Elizabeth Lemley, 20, won gold in her Olympic debut in women’s moguls. Her teammate, Jaelin Kauf, took the silver. Speedskater Jordan Stolz took the gold in men’s 1,000-meters, setting an Olympic record.

Norway currently leads in the gold count, with eight gold medals for the winter sports powerhouse. They are tied with host nation, Italy, for total medals with 18.
