Nexgrill has issued a voluntary recall of over 10.2 million of its metal-wire bristle grill brushes sold at Home Depot after reports of bristles detaching and causing “serious internal injuries.”
On Thursday, the grill manufacturer recalled six types of its grill brushes, stating that “small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes and stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard or risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery.”
The brushes recalled include the 19-inch grill brush (model no. 530-0024), grill cleaning brush with scraper (530-0024G), long handle grill brush (530-0034), grill brush and scraper (530-0039), grill brush with scrub pad (530-0041) and wood handle grill brush (530-0042).
“The recalled grill brushes have a metal wire bristle brush attached to either a black plastic or a bamboo wood handle,” Nexgrill’s website states. “If the product does not have a Nexgrill logo on the plastic handle or stamped on the back of the bamboo handle, it is not a Nexgrill grill brush.”
All affected models were sold in Home Depot stores and online at the retailer’s website from 2015 to 2026 for $5 to $15.
So far, at least 68 cases of small wire bristles detaching from the grill brushes have been reported, including five in which consumers sought medical attention to remove bristles from their digestive tract or throat, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled grill brushes and contact Nexgrill for a full refund to be issued as a gift card,” the government website added. To register a recall, consumers will be provided with a registration code, where they will be directed to upload a picture of their grill brush with that code and their initials to the recall website.
Once consumers receive a confirmation email that their registration has been successfully processed, they will receive instructions for disposing of the recalled grill brush.
Consumers may receive a $5 to $15 gift card, depending on the model they purchased.
Nexgrill urged consumers to dispose of the brushes even if they appear fine.
“Safety is our top priority. Our goal in the production of our grill brushes is simple: giving our customers a way to safely clean and maintain their grills as they enjoy the All-American BBQ tradition with family and friends,” Nexgrill said in a statement to TODAY.com.
“Our commitment to the safety of our customers includes providing clear instructions to examine the brush before use, to discard the brush if any bristles are loose, and make sure cooking surfaces have no loose bristles before cooking.”
