Monsoons can be hard on cats due to the high humidity, dampness and rise in fungal infections. Older cats experience joint pains, flat-faced cats can face breathing issues and all cats can face skin issues if they get drenched during travels. Dr. Abhishek Choudhary, Consultant Veterinarian, Vetic shares a few points you should remember if you plan on traveling with your cat this rainy season.

High humidity makes respiratory infections more common as compared to the drier winter months. If you see mucus or crusts near your cat’s nose and eyes, notice coughing and sneezing, you should definitely speak to your vet. While traveling to the vet, use a sturdy carrier and minimize the inflow of cold air and water – use a light blanket, if necessary.

Cats can become dehydrated quite easily even during the monsoon season. Give them fresh water before traveling, or offer them wet food. Avoid feeding them too much right before traveling. Treats are often higher in calories than dry kibbles – you can choose naturally dried tuna or salmon treats without preservatives for your cat as travel snacks.

Whether you are traveling for pleasure or taking your cat to the vet, keep the basic first aid kit handy. It should have a cat-friendly pain medication, medicine for vomiting, bandages, antiseptic solution, and a thermometer. Planning well-ahead can ensure your cat’s well-being throughout the ride and afterwards. You may also want to keep their favourite toy and some catnip for their additional comfort.

With preparation, dry comfort, proper ventilation, and safe planning, you can make rainy-season travel stress-free for your cat. This ensures their physical health and supports their emotional wellbeing, no matter the weather.
