Gajanana Sankashti Chaturthi will be observed on Monday, July 14.
Sankashti Chaturthi, also known as Gajanana Sankashti Chaturthi, is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It is observed on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the Ashadha month, according to the Amanta Hindu calendar. In the Purnimanta calendar, this falls in the month of Shravana.
On this special day, devotees worship Lord Ganesha in the form of Gajanana. The name ‘Gajanana’ comes from two words: ‘Gaja’ meaning elephant, and ‘Anana’ meaning face, so Gajanana means ‘the one with an elephant face’.
This form is one of the eight important forms of Lord Ganesha, known as the Ashta Vinayaka. It is believed that praying to Lord Gajanana on this day helps fulfil all desires and can even bring success over powerful people and authorities.

Sankashti Chaturthi 2025: History and Significance
According to the Mudgal Purana (a Hindu religious text dedicated to Ganesha), Lord Gajanana appeared during a time when the earth was troubled by a powerful demon named Lobhasura. His evil actions created chaos, and the gods prayed to Lord Ganesha with full devotion to stop him.
In response, Lord Ganesha appeared in the form of Gajanana and defeated Lobhasura, bringing peace back to the world.
The word “Sankashti” means freedom from difficulties. Lord Ganesha, known as the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles, is believed to help his devotees overcome problems. That is why many people fast on Sankashti Chaturthi, hoping to receive his blessings and find solutions to their troubles.
Sankashti Chaturthi 2025: Rituals
On Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees begin their day early by taking a holy bath before sunrise and wearing clean or new clothes. Many choose to observe either a full fast or a partial one. A small idol or image of Lord Ganesha is placed on a clean surface and decorated with durva grass, fresh flowers, ghee lamps, and incense sticks. Offerings like modaks and ladoos are made as prasad.
The worship ritual includes chanting mantras and reading the Sankashti Vrat story. In the evening, the puja and aarti are performed, and the fast is broken only after sighting the moon. Devotees then eat the prasad along with some fruits to end their fast.
